JLS Defend Use Of Auto-Tune

Published: Monday 11th Jul 2011 by David

In what will be sure to strike up debate in all corners of PopCultureVille, British boyband JLS have defended artists who have come under criticism for using auto-tune.

Find out what they had to say below…

On the criticism they have faced for their alleged dependency on the tool, lead singers Aston and Oritse commented:

If you get critics come and see the show, we can sing it live, so what’s the problem? It’s kind of pointless for them to criticise, we are in a new school generation and [for] that generation, stuff like music effects, auto tune and sampling is part of that.”

These comments come after the quartet were accused of using auto-tune to disguise their otherwise thin vocals, especially in their smash hit The Club Is Alive’.

Whilst their habitual lip syncing and use of the widely debated production tool haven’t done any the band any critical favours, it is worth remembering that they were indeed contestants on the X Factor UK where their collective singing was often heralded as being some of the best the show had heard.

Even giving winner Alexandra Burke stiff competition up until the finals.

If he’s saying they can sing live then why use it in a song? Dumbass.

Well, Autotune is a tool that should be used when you intend to sound like an android, if you want to sound human and genuine, then otherwise you must not use it.

If you use Autotune to hide deficient and flat vocals then you are not a singer.

It depends. If you simply cannot sing with out auto-tune then damn just hang it up and go flip burgers at Wendy’s…LOL! If you use it on occasion & it sounds good, I really don’t mind!

exactly! i dont understand why people are so mad when artists are using autotunes, its just to add flavor to the songs! and HELLO WE ARE IN 2011

the human voice can create plenty of effects without the use of technology , beyonce does it , brandy does it , jill scott does it justin timberlake has done it, auto tune is just lazyness for artits lik JLS,jason derulo etc .People can say times have changed but autotune is not new , its the constant use of it that is , The past has dictated the future of music and alot of artists have not bothered to learn the skills of the generations before them and skipped right to whats the now thing thats why they wont last. AUTO TUNE singers sell singles not albums.

If you can’t sing without it and you are covering u vocal flaws – JUST STOP!!!! If you are using autotune for the effect to sound robotic/futuristic – ok fine. Don’t use it to pitch correction and sustain long notes, etc. Auto tune is a crutch and needs to be used sparingly.
