Things really do appear to have come full circle for a certain Kelly Rowland.
It’s almost 4 years to the day that the songbird unleashed her sophomore set ‘Ms. Kelly’ on the marketplace. As history goes; political and managerial mishaps unfortunately sunk that ship. As such, Rowland was seemingly cast to a fate as the lesser child of Destiny.
Fast forward to today, and the climate looks altogether different for the singer. Having severed ties with manager Mathew Knowles in 2009, her career has climbed from strength to strength. Indeed, the time since then has seen her notch up heightened success Internationally, land a role as a judge on the UK’s X Factor, and – perhaps most notably – score her biggest Stateside hit to date with the sizzling ‘Motivation’.
Hoping to legitimate this success, the 30 year old lined up an all-star cast of songwriters and producers to craft her third studio album ‘Here I Am’.
With past efforts not hitting the commercial strides they, perhaps, should have, will it be third time lucky for the songstress?
If the album’s declarative opener, ‘I’m Dat Chick’, is anything to go by, then the answer should be a resounding ‘yes’. Boasting sass in abundance, the Tricky Stewart banger is everything the opening track on an LP of this magnitude needed to be. Assertive, confident, and laced in swag. A fitting re-introduction to Rowland – the Solo Star.
‘Solo Star’ being a title she truly cements on standout cuts ‘Turn It Up’ and ‘Feeling Me Right Now’. Produced by Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, the former serves up a pulsating 808, lush layered vocals, and is undeniably dancefloor destined. What’s more, it does what few up-tempo’s in the contemporary climate are concerned with – relays a palatable narrative. “I can tell the whole world now, that I had no idea you were loving her”, Rowland sings as she reminisces on a love gone wrong. A home-run if she’s ever hit one.
Elsewhere, the piano led ode-to-self ‘Feeling Me Right Now’ easily serves as one of the best songs the budding diva has recorded to date. For, with its sophist use of similes and metaphors, the Rico Love/Earl E produced track bests similar themed cuts – which far too often take the literal approach to self-empowerment. “I just want you close, close, nearer, I been watching you all night up in my mirror. I’m feeling me right now” she sings. Single treatment is imperative.
As is recognition of the sensual mid-tempo ‘All of the Night’. Produced by The Runners, the winner of a track sees Rowland veer further into tasteful ‘baby-making’ territory. A staple of any solid R&B effort.
Ironically, the album’s biggest strength (commercial appeal) ultimately serves as somewhat of an Achilles’ heel. For nowhere present is the moody, seduction which dripped from innovative lead single ‘Motivation’. Rather, the record instead boasts many a track clearly crafted (almost too-consciously) with radio in mind. Case, point, example, the Hitboy produced, Big Sean assisted ‘Lay It On Me’.
Though lacking a taxing vocal, ‘Lay’ however compensates with a friendly melody, hooks by the bucketload, and enough ‘eh eh’s’, ‘oh-oh’s’, and ‘so-lo’s’ to justify its selection as the project’s latest single.
Similarly, ‘Work It Man’ is an Urban and Rhythmic hit-in-waiting. Yet with its title and moreover Rowland’s history with its producer Darkchild (see: ‘Lose My Breath’ and even this LP’s ‘Turn It Up’), one could be forgiven anticipating something with more umph. Both vocally and production-wise.
‘Here I Am’, then, (from a lyrical and production standpoint) doesn’t wholly do what it says on the tin: tell us exactly who Kelly Rowland is. (An age-old issue for LP’s with such prolific titles).
However, in an ever-crowded marketplace, what the album does do exceptionally well is place Rowland at the epicenter of what’s current, trendy, and fresh. A path well-treaded on by chart contemporaries such as Rihanna, who when successful, are afforded the opportunity to ‘up the edgy’ on later releases. A point which makes the LP’s closing tracks – Dance duo ‘Commander’ and the RedOne produced ‘Down For Whatever’ – seem less out of place, and perhaps an indication of what’s to come. Or at the simplest of levels, a sample of what else she is capable of.
As such, with ‘Here I Am’, Rowland positions herself as a viable chart force, while also whetting our appetite for (what is hoped will be) a less ‘safe’ product next go round.

The album does not sound like s***, it’s just not deep. Every song doesn’t have to be deep & Soulful. Kelly did that already w/ “Simply Deep” & “Ms. Kelly”, now she’s loving herself, feeling confident, wants to dance & inspire people to move. This is a very lively album, & in it’s lane it slays! If you want a deep, dark album get her previous efforts, or try someone else. But, there is nothing wrong with her album. & vocally it’s great too. @(QUEENBEY) . The album is truly deserving of a 4/5. It’s a really great piece of art.

I only listened to it once so far and I immediately liked about 1/2 the tracks (including Motivation). I’m not a fan of Work It Man and never could get into Commander, but the rest may grow on me. I’ll give the album a few more listens before deciding whether or not I’ll be purchasing it. I most likely will because I would like to see Kelly upstage Beyonce this time around.

I really love Kelly from the very beginning (when she was the “not-so-pretty DC’s member”) but I think it’s a shame she has not done an album we all know she is cappable of.
She should have sticked to songs à la WLTO, Commander and so. She’s just great doing eurodance/hiphopguettaesques tracks. In fact, I think “Down for Whatever” is the best song off this album.
I hope she will release a UK version of this album including more eurodance songs and not so many R&B midtempos.
The Darkchild produced songs have really dissappointed me. Such a great team to make such forgettable songs 🙁

This album is a grower. I’ve listened to it a couple of times and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can appreciate what Kelly Rowland & her team presents with “Here I Am”. This album isn’t lyrically or sonically fresh. However, I think ‘Here I Am” is about cementing Kelly Rowland as a viable artist that can make radio hits (which isn’t a bad thing). It’s actually what she needs right now.
All in all, Kelly Rowland has a winner this time around. “Keep It Between Us” & “Down For Whatever” are bangers…along with the rest of the album. I’m supporting her…pre-ordered the Deluxe version of “Here I Am” earlier this week.
The music is fun, she looks great, & she has major confidence right now. I’m excited to see how this era unfolds for her. GO, GO, GO, GO Kelly Rowland!

I am SOOOOO disappointed with this album.I was rooting for her thinking that she was going to bring an authentic r n’b vibe and then she released that generic nonsense as the 2nd single and I understood she was all about radio and sing alongs.The album is a 2-star album at best for me
A few days ago I wasn’t impressed with hearing the longer Itunes snippets of the few songs that I liked from this album originally, Now after giving them a few listens, it’s really growing on me. ‘Feeling Myself Tonight’ and ‘Turn it Up’ are 2 of my favorite Kelly songs ever. These songs have to be singles!!! The album as a whole is mediocre, but some songs may grow on me more after a while. I don’t think it’s a disc worthy of 4 stars IMO. I’d rate it maybe 3, if I’m being honest, but I think Kelly has material to work with.

First and foremost Iet me say I am a fan of good music. I listen for hooks, melodies, great lyric phrasing, and the connection in the artists’ voice. While reading your review I thought it was fair, but I think in all honesty you did not address one of the most important factors. Kelly has put together one of the most well DIVERSE albums this year. I like that it was not all about R&B. It was a lil pop it has a few dance tracks. She shows us how versatile she is as an artist. And with that means she showed growth from Ms. Kelly. By the way Ms. Kelly was an excellent solid R&B album.
I hope that she steps her promo game up because if all the other artist can sell gimmick music there is no reason why she cant push “Here I Am” down a few peoples throat. To me her album spoke right to the title starting with Im Dat Chick. To Feeling Me Right now to Heaven & Earth. I listen to each song and like ok she is woman, she is a freak, she has finally found courage. I honestly think “Heaven & Earth” should have closed the album out. Anyway I cannot sit here and argue or call people haters who dislike the music. That is their opinion. But there is a true difference from disliking something and then straight being an hater!

The album is NOT good at all. When motivation and Run the world were released I really thought Kelly was going to bring it better than Beyonce with the music (cos Run the world is a disaster) and Motivation really grew on everybody.
But i downloaded to my computer 3 days a go this album and I´ve already deleted it. It´s below average. On the other hand Bey brought it better than I thought and I gave her album 7/10.
I give Kelly´s album 5/10. Big dissapointment. (Well I´m not a fan so it´s not really a dissapointment 🙂 )
i like the album, its the perfect mixture of Hip-Hop Pop & R&B.
i wont give it a rating yet until i’ve familiarized myself with all the tracks but i like mostly all of them, especially Lay It On Me (which should be the next single)
I also hope she wont give anymore lipsynced performances (ie: BET Awards)

Turn it Up- A Rock/Pop with R&B elements, It already infuses a Dance appeal to her already popular Dance themed tracks, I can see this as themes in t***/college themed shows..if promoted well commercially it can dominate radio airwaves on the R&B/Pop formats…It also has very Rock sound that can appeal to youth audiences and be the perfect single for Kelly to have all out Crossover success…(My Favorite Single on the album)
Keep it between Us- A R&B song that also uses atmospheric pop elements, slows down the tempo of her previous releases, and shows more of her smooth sensual voice without huge dance production….It can definitely be an R&B slow jam hit and if other songs are popularize it can give Kelly the momentum to slow down the tempo and release this rememberable slow jam
I’M Dat Chick-A R&B song with hard hitting production, a declarative female anthem, it has the huge possibility of being a crossover Pop hit…and If other single are successful as well as the album it gives kelly the Chance to be somewhat cocky and temporarily suspend her humbleness…this perfect final single which shows her confidence in being a superstar…
Urban/Radio Only/Non Commercial
All of The Night ft.Rico Love- An smooth and s*** R&B slow jam which features superstar producer Rico Love, Its very sensual and s*** single with an appeal directly to R&B fans, its a pure R&B track that you can hear in clubs as the closing rock-away song..It may possibly have commercial appeal after being a hit on the R&B format…but this song is a pure tribute to her loyal R&B fans.
Commander (R&B Remix)- A slowed down more sensual R&B version of UK techno-dance-pop hit..It is somewhat new to American audiences..This could be released to R&B radio and will surely be a hit…The song also features Nelly who she ha previous collaborated on successful single “Dilemma” and more recently “Gone”..The song will also renew success of the Techno-Dance version and make it crossover to all audiences.
Advice to Kelly Rowland…Get heavy on the promotional trail Daytime/Late Night Talk shows, Interviews,,,ASAP because with UK X FACTOR premiering in the Fall, She is going undoubtedly promote heavy in UK due to her involvement as judge on the show, leaving her with with limited US promotion…but with the Major chance to be a Worldwide superstar….Im pretty sure Kelly will cease the moment and unfold into the shining star we always knew she could be!!!

There isn’t anything special about this album. No big vocal performance,recycled beats,low quality of production,too many guest,not enough songs. Miss Kelly came out in 2007,it’s 2011. Simply deep and Miss kelly are better albums. It’s disappointing to wait so long for an artist and they deliver something like “Here I Am” . I’ll be fair there are 3 songs that I like. But much like her performances this album is a miss. 2/5

For my review in a previous Kelly post I gave it a 3.5/5 I still think keep it between us is the winner on this album! Her voice sounded so soulful on that track! I’ll deff be buying that one for sure!

I give credit where it’s due and I am not one of those dumb stans that goes along with the crowd……If she slayed, I would have given her at least 4/5 but this album SUCKS and is pure mediocre material….It deserves a 2/5……but that doesn’t mean I am not her fan……….I wish her the best, but the album is wack…….I expect 16 year old girls to be making such an album and not a 30 year old woman…….she doesn’t display her vocals and the songs are just poor, immature with horrible lyrics

Damn y’all want Kelly to win so bad you will take this mediocre album? Fantasy ride,basic instinct,love&war,no boys allowed,calling all hearts,pyramid, and so many more albums deserve to have half the treatment Kelly has gotten. There isn’t anything special about this album. No big vocal performance,recycled beats,low quality of production,too many guest,not enough songs. Miss Kelly came out in 2007,it’s 2011. Simply deep and Miss kelly are better albums. It’s disappointing to wait so long for an artist and they deliver something like “Here I Am” . I’ll be fair there are 3 songs that I like. But much like her performances this album is a miss. 2/5

According to Billboard, Lay It on Me will be the 2nd single, but after the album is released and Down for Whatever will be the 1st international single because the album is being released internationally later on. I disagree with all he comments saying the album is trash. I absolutely love the album! I wasn’t sold to buy it because the snippets wasn’t giving me enough so when I found it leaked, I downloaded the album. I love every song on the album especially Work It Man, Lay It On Me, Keep It Between Us, Down For Whatever and All Of The Night. I’ve already pre-ordered a digital copy and will be buying a hard copy tuesday. I really thought she would have released Lay It On Me to radio and the video especially after the hype she got from the BET Awards. I am worried about the promo for this album and first weeks sells. We will see I guess.

I’ve got a change to listen to most of the song in full. As a fan of Kelly Rowland since DC days I’m VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY DISAPPOINTED. I was looking for a more mature Kelly. Even Ms Kelly sounded way better than this. I believe in uptempo songs because they are marketable and get people’s attention but artists MUST know how to create the perfect balance of timely, timeless, uptempo, midtempo, ballads, various genre, ect. I was so looking for that because Kelly is one of the few artist that can sing several genre almost effortless; and this did not a far cry from that. The album is so timely, it is so irritating, I want to hear songs that are timeless. (Like I always say that my wedding song will be “This is love”). I wanted to heard difficult vocals. I realized is that vocally she does not challenge herself. It is good to have hits but growth must be evident. Someone comment and said that after 2 years all Kelly is inspired to sing about is d**k. And I totally agree . Most of the songs are about s** which is distasting. Pron bombard me daily and must listen to it, ABSOLUTELY NOT. I though Kelly would have put some pop instead of dance on the LP. I wish Kelly would have wrote some of her song because ALL the lyrics are sooooooooo crappy, its not funny. I really like the snippet of “Turn it up” but even that turn out to be a disappointment, It a long time I’ve heard broken heard in that way but the auto-tune and the lyrics killed it.

For the record this album is exactly what Kelly Rowland needed. Especially in the US. With her first album (Simply Deep) she was clearly ahead of her time. She brought substance but the US didnt respond and here promo team focused more on the UK. 4 years later she hit us with her second album (Ms Kelly) and she finally began to come into her own but of course the prmo was horrid on the album and she only got 1 single (like this) and 6 months later a second single (ghetto) that was pulled before anything could be done and that was it! No other single and a sorry as digital re-release with a third single (daylight) as its opener – again – substance but us wasnt feeling it. The “fans” kept complaing that kelly is giving any soul (simply deep) or making black music or for Ms Kelly everyone was saying the album is boring or too ballad heavy. Now Ms Kelly releases her 3rd album (Here I Am) which is straight fire and now the lyrics are deep enough and vocally she doesnt show growth. Like are u serious right now. Its kinda hard to grow when you are mature from the start. Lyrically this album may not be as deep as her first 2 but to be quite honest its far mare enjoyable and consistent. The album flows from track to track and it feels complete – she is showing her range and versatility and i for one applaud her for it. And for the haters who stated that vocally she didnt grow….U ARE ABSOLUTLY DEAF. Did you guys not here “Keep it between us” or “heaven and earth” – vocally she soars and there is the substace you stated she was lacking. I think Here I am is a great album, it seems like Kelly is one of those people who constantly need to push out haters for no reason at all, for her to remain classy and hard working amongst all this hate is a great indication of how those women were brought up in the Knowles household, for that you have to give Matthew and Tina their props because i cant imagine why Beyonce’s fans and Kelly fans will be at each other’s throats instead of supporting each other. anyway don’t understand why the promo is non existent but the material speaks for itself, it’s a fantastic album giving fans and haters alike a tip of what is to come. she can only get better can’t wait for 26th July. and congrats to kelly for nabbing a part in a four hour two nights TV series of Stephen King’s bag of bones, as a fan of stephen King’s novels i cannot wait to watch Kelly sink her teeth into this role and continue to grow her brand.

I don’t usually bring Beyonce into Kelly posts but I have to make mention of this. It’s funny to me how the very people who rep for Beyonce are criticizing Kelly for recording a commercial album when the majority of Beyonce’s catalogue is COMMERCIAL. It’s funny to me that people are criticizing Kelly for singing about s** at age 30, when Beyonce was singing about s** at age 21 (see “Naughty Girl”, “Speechless”, “I’d Rather Be With You”, etc.). Kelly is a GROWN WOMAN. She’s a S*** WOMAN. Why can’t she sing about a very natural act (that should only occur between husband and wife, mind you) that all ADULTS are aware of. Kelly isn’t making music for 16 year olds any more (which is why she should be marketed to a much more sophisticated audience), the 106th and Park audience aint gon’ cut it. It’s funny to me how people are criticizing Kelly for her “lack of vocal growth” (THAT’S A LIE) when Beyonce’s idea of vocal growth is screaming like a crazy person (yelling and growling excessively does not translate to good singing). Don’t get me wrong, Beyonce can sing, and her signature is her signature (although her voice can be quite abrasive at times). Kelly has her own signature, which is her TONE. Kelly can sing high or low, hard or soft, power-house or mellow, r&b or dance, pop or alternative; basically, she can sing ANYTHING and never lose that signature, beautiful tone. Her voice is just beautiful and diverse. Some people are just blessed to have a naturally beautiful tone and timbre. Kelly is one of those people. She doesn’t have to try as hard as some others to sing from an emotional and organic place. Her talent is organic. Some people are even criticizing Kelly for having a hit (that RUDE producer) but when Beyonce has a hit she’s practically worshipped for it. I’m baffled by this. Even I have criticized Kelly for not being as aggressive as I would like her to be concerning her career. I realize though that unlike Beyonce, Kelly is not driven by selfish ambition. She’s not seeking recognition from the world (although she appreciates what little she gets). She just wants to make music that she’s proud of and that people can enjoy. She’s not a glory hog. She always gives credit to others (even those who try and discredit her). Kelly Rowland is a rarity in this industry, and she’s criticized for it. I just don’t understand it.
My question to all of the critics is this: Did you buy Simply Deep? Did you buy Ms. Kelly? I certainly did and I can appreciate those albums for what they were the same way I can appreciate Here I Am for what it is. The people who are nit-picking are only doing it because they are upset that Kelly and Beyonce are FINALLY on an even playing field, and Kelly is bringing her A-game.
I can’t wait for Tuesday because I will then be able to go out and buy one of the best albums of 2011.
I have always had eclectic taste in music. I can appreciate what Adele comes with just as much as I can appreciate what Marsia Ambrosius comes with. I love bands like Train as well as groups like Day 26. I love old school as well as some new school. I would not want to live in a world without GOSPEL music. I love a multitude of genres and styles within those genres. I love MUSIC. It’s not about who’s most popular or who has the most singles on billboard, it’s about who’s truly talented and makes music authentically. I feel Kelly Rowland does that, and she happens to be one of the sweetest most genuine people in the industry. That is why I SUPPORT her.
If you don’t like her. If you’re not going to buy her albums. If you’re ‘dissapointed” , LEAVE HER ALONE! Stop invading her posts. Don’t comment. I stopped commenting under Beyonce’s posts a long time ago, because I’m not too fond of her. I’m no longer interested in what she’s doing (although it’s almost impossible not to know what she’s doing because she’s ubiquitous). I don’t check for her anymore. SHE has turned me off. I can still find things to like and appreciate about Kelly and that’s why I still support her. If you don’t support her; just STOP! Stay AWAY! It’s not that hard.
I try real hard not to get caught up in the immature B.S. that pollutes these posts; but some of you are so cruel, rude, ignorant and asanine that it’s hard for me to keep coming back to these posts, seeing the same names again and again and again like this is a chatroom or something and not comment on the lunacy of it all.

I try to give credit where it is due but I just can’t PERSONALLY relate to this album. There’s not enough maturity and emotion on the album for my taste. I like albums that take me on a rollercoaster ride filled with different emotions from heartache to happiness and everything in between. I just didn’t feel strongly one way or another when listening to the lyrics and vocal delivery on this album. Just seems like a collection of mainly emotionally empty songs. But that’s not what’s important to everyone, I guess some people enjoy the light hearted nature of the album.

If she was in Beyonce’s spotlight she would’ve have been not be a part of Destiny’s Child. At the same time I feel where some people may think she was in Beyonce’s spotlight however that was NEVER the case. Oh and another thing @Kelly Motivation the album is something you can relate too. Why do you feel she has to do what other artist have done? That’s what the problem of some fickle fans or fans vice versa they worry too much on what other artists have done and put the extreme pressure on their own fav to do something relatable on what other artist have done. Focus on your fav and be happy their gave you something you can listen to.And just because you dislike a certain number of songs and you turn around and say people are not going to relate to it is bias and naive because just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean everyone is thinking the same way.
