Gloria Gaynor, the legendary voice behind the anthem ‘I Will Survive,’ has been announced as one of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honorees, but the honor has sparked backlash.

The recognition, presented by Donald Trump, is drawing criticism from some of Gaynor’s LGBTQ+ fans who have long embraced her signature hit as a symbol of empowerment and resilience.
Speaking on the honor, she said in a statement:
My hope is that in accepting this honor, I can continue with the inspirational phenomenon that began with ‘I Will Survive.
Sharing my music and art on a global level to provide encouragement, hope, empowerment, inspiration, understanding, and unity is the core of my purpose.”
Newly surfaced docs show that the 81-year-old singer has contributed over $22,000 to Republican groups and candidates since 2023. Her largest donation went to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson ($2,160.57), with additional contributions to Rep. Kevin McCarthy.
Critics argue that her donations and Trump’s pledge to strip “wokeness” from the Kennedy Center put Gaynor at odds with the very communities that elevated her to icon status. Some are even pressuring her to decline the honor.
