As reported yesterday, ‘Untitled’ singer D’Angelo is back.
The soulful star struck many a pose in his new GQ feature, yet it’s his words that are sure to resonate most.
Flip the hood to see the 38 year old dish on his demons, overcoming them, and an interesting encounter which saw him put Pop queen Madonna in check.
Via GQ:
D’Angelo on battling his substance abuse during his hiatus: “I didn’t really think I had a problem like that,” he says, taking a hit off a Newport. “I felt like, you know, all I got to do is clean up and I’ll be fine. Just get in the studio and I’ll be fucking fine.”
On then checking into alcohol rehab…and failing twice: “I went in under a fake name so people wouldn’t know who I was, right? So, you know, Michael (his real name) never got treatment. It was this other character that was in there. And the moment I left, I went straight to the fucking liquor store.”
…on his arrest for soliciting sex from an undercover officer: “It was just me making a stupid decision, a wrong turn, on the wrong night. I’m not the role-model motherfucker. Look at all the shit that I’ve been in.”
…on what made him turn his life around: “After J. Dilla’s death, I felt like I was going to be next. I ain’t bullshitting. I was scared then,” he says, recalling how shame engulfed him, preventing him from attending the funeral. “I was so fucked-up, I couldn’t go.”
…on an instance with a female fan: “One time I got mad when a female threw money at me onstage, and that made me feel fucked-up, and I threw the money back at her,” he says. “ I was like, ‘I’m not a stripper.’
…on Madonna:
When Madonna turned 39, she asked him to sing “Happy Birthday” at her party. One press report had her sitting on his lap and French-kissing him. In fact, two sources say that ultimately D rebuffed her advances at another gathering not long after. At that event, the sources say, Madonna walked over and told a woman sitting next to D, “I think you’re in my seat.” The woman got up. Madonna sat down and told him, “I’d like to know what you’re thinking.” To which D replied, “I’m thinking you’re rude.”

Personally I’m wondering why the Madonna part is not quoted directly like the rest of the interview and what or who are the so called sources? It just seems like that part was just tacked onto the interview I guess to make it more interesting.
In other words, D is not quoted as to Madonna’s actions, only unnamed sources with D’s supposed quoted reaction to whatever.

Meh. I don’t believe the Madonna story. There’s no way she would have traded 90’s era fitness trainer Carlos Leon (who at the time was an Adonis) for a constantly high D’Angelo, who is about as tall as she is. I would sooner believe the flip side.
D’Angelo has “issues”. DOCUMENTED issues and despite how talented he is, and how good his music used to be, is basically a nutcase. I wouldn’t be quick to believe much of what he has to say.
Umm… He isn’t the first artist that has said the same thing about Madonna.
