Three years after resurrecting Female Rap, 2010 saw the release of ‘Pink Friday‘- the debut album by Nicki Minaj.
Hailed for its provocative and a times poetic ( ‘Catch Me’, ‘Here I Am‘) numbers, the LP now stands with sales of over 2.5 million copies worldwide, successfully outselling Rihanna‘s ‘Loud‘ without ever spawning a US #1 single.
Now, four months after releasing its follow up ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’, she has compared the two with the benefit of her hindsight.
Her conclusion below…
Speaking to Coolum News, the Pop star explained:
Sometimes I felt the first album was a little too revealing, too emotional at times, and the other thing about your first album is that you’ve had all these emotions pent up inside to release – and that’s what you do on your debut.
On her second album:
On the second album I was more concerned about just having fun.
Perhaps as a response to her success with ‘Turn Me On’, it’s clear Minaj made a marked effort to embrace the ‘upbeat’ with ‘Roman Reloaded‘.
Our only gripe with that is that while ‘Masquerade‘ and ‘Va Va Voom’ are just as powerful as her more reflective numbers, ‘Reloaded’ would be better served if a filler like ‘Sex In The Lounge’ was replaced with a cut akin to ‘Save Me’.
For, for all it’s whimsicality, finding depth in ‘Reloaded’ may prove too difficult to find for any unfamiliar with Minaj or her story.
Here’s hoping album #3 strikes a clean balance between both.

Well, in my opinion, she needs to go back to that “revealing” element. She needs vulnerability, honesty and rawness in her music.
She can keep releasing pop singles if she wants to, but she shouldn’t forget what made people interested at first and that was her hip hop tracks. She can’t sell an album without a huge urban smash. And her current album is doing well given the industry’s standards, but she needs to bring it harder on her 3rd album. ‘Pound The Alarm’ is probably going to do very well and be a top 10 hit on pop radio, but it can’t sell the album singlehandedly

Im a huge Nicki fan and gave like 110 Nicki Minaj songs on my iPod (full songs and her features) and i was real excited for Pink Friday:RR but i can say i was disappointed… 1st off i cant believe Roman In Moscow wasnt on there (thats my fav) stupid h**, i am your leader, and roman holiday are good but tyats about it… The only pop-ish songs I like are Va Va Voom and Masquerade… I only like the rap type parts in Whip It… I liked every song from pink friday except for maybe 2. Not to be a hater but c’mon even Lady Gaga could sell a rap song better then Nicki could (lady gaga my fav artist). Im hoping for more songs like Romans Revenge, Did It On Em, Stupid H**, and Roman In Moscow on her 3rd album. And a better more creative name and not just Pink Friday: Martha Mayhem or somethin stupid like that
