State of MN Files Civil Rights Charge Against Minneapolis PD To Investigate Past 10 Years of Activity

Published: Tuesday 2nd Jun 2020 by Rashad

On Tuesday (June 2), the state of Minnesota – under the guidance of Governor Tim Walz – launched a sweeping civil rights probe into the Minneapolis Police Department – a week after an arresting officer placed his knee on the neck of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, for over 8 minutes (events that led his death).

Designed to root out “systemic racism that is generations deep,” the governor took to Twitter earlier today to make the official announcement that the investigation would review policies and practices from over the past 10 years to determine if there was any foul play.

To add, the Minneapolis City Council said it would assist.

“We welcome and fully support the Minnesota Department of Human Rights’ robust investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department,” according to a council statement. “We urge the state to use its full weight to hold the Minneapolis Police Department accountable for any and all abuses of power and harms to our community and stand ready to aid in this process as full partners.”
