Ariana DeBose Becomes First Afro Latina & Openly Queer Woman to Win Best Supporting Actress Oscar

Having already collected best supporting actress trophies at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards for her role in the critically acclaimed, Steven Spielberg-directed remake of ‘West Side Story,’ Afro Latina actress Ariana DeBose was considered a frontrunner to claim the same award at this year’s Oscars.

Sunday night (March 27), the prediction came true.

Ariana won the Oscar for best supporting actress at the 94th Academy Awards, which aired live from the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles on March 27.

Lauded for her portrayal of “Anita” in ‘West Side Story,’ DeBose’s win comes 60 years after Rita Moreno won the same award for the same role.

Presented by previous Academy Award winners Daniel Kaluuya and H.E.R., the triumph saw DeBose defeat Aunjanue Ellis, Kirsten Dunst, and others to nab the golden statuette.

It makes DeBose only the second Latina actor to win an acting Oscar (after Moreno), first Afro Latina to win an acting Oscar, and the first queer woman of color to nab an Academy Award victory.
