On the eve of what could be her inaugural Academy Award win for the stunning portrayal of civil rights pioneer Harriet Tubman, Emmy/Tony/Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo‘s building buzz for assuming the role of another pivotal figure in Black History:  Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.

Ahead of the late 2020 premiere of the musical monarch’s biographical feature film starring Academy and Grammy award-winner Jennifer Hudson (click here to see the teaser), National Geographic announced ‘Genius: Aretha’ –  an eight-part series dedicated to the late musical icon.

Premiering over four consecutive nights beginning Memorial Day 2020, the anthology installment comes as the first-ever authorized limited series about the diva.  According to NG it will “explore Franklin’s musical genius and incomparable career — and the immeasurable impact and lasting influence she has had on music and culture around the world.”

With secured music rights to the legend’s catalog, the flick will see Erivo flex her acting and musical muscles in ways viewers have yet to see.  Look inside for a glimpse of what’s to come:

As DC’s ‘Birds of Prey’ film took off in theaters across the United States on Friday (February 7), its companion album – the official movie soundtrack – entered the musical realm to compete for Billboard’s top spot.

A serious taste of girl-power, the female-filled project – kicked off by the high octane ‘Diamonds’ (Megan Thee Stallion, Normani) – assembled a wide range of talented women across Pop, Rock, Rap, and other genres to fill out its exclusive 15-song tracklist. In addition to calling on chart-topping hitmakers like Megan Thee StallionHalsey, and Summer Walker, popular Hip Hop acts Doja Cat and Saweetie are are among the ladies leading tunes on the set.

TGJ’s Shar Jossell chopped it up with the likes of Joseph Sikora, Naturi Naughton, and Larenz Tate, who opened up about the end of an era and touched on the eagerly awaited spin-off’s – one of which features rapper Method Man.

With the world still picking its collective jaw from the floor following Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s epic Super Bowl Halftime Show, J.Lo is speaking up and out about the performance everyone is talking about.

Stopping by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the diva supreme shared insights into her preparation for the Big Game – which included watching past performances from the likes of Prince, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga.

In a cool segment, she also reflected on key moments from her showing.

Naturally, having slayed Halftime, many are wondering what her next move will be.

Well, speaking to Fallon, she revealed that her next movie – ‘Marry Me’ (which she leads with Owen Wilson) – will come paired with a full length album featuring a prominent Latin superstar.

The superstar’s FENTY empire continues to grow at the most rapid of rates, with tonight seeing the diva launch her luxury clothing line at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.

Rocking the range herself, the 31-year-old stunned as she rubbed shoulders with British Vogue’s Editor in Chief Edward Enniful and a host of others as she placed the latest brick in place for her entrepreneurial palace.

The event took place on the same day Rih responded to fans demanding her long-awaited ninth studio album.

Alicia Keys is working the UK promo trail in support of new single ‘Underdog’ and forthcoming album ‘ALICIA’ (due March 20th).

The songbird’s latest stop was the Graham Norton Show, where she nested on stage to perform the track.

Backed by a dynamic band, the 15-time GRAMMY winner took vocal flight with the anthem; one that has received ample praise since its release last month.

Despite over 20 years of dominance, Jennifer Lopez continues to elevate to new heights.

This past Sunday saw the stage blazer immortalize her career on the grandest stage of them all – the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Putting on a joint spectacle with Shakira, the performance was watched live by over 100 million viewers and has gone on to amass another 100 million replays on YouTube.

Rihanna has remained all sorts of silent about her new album – much to the frustration of her fans.

This year marks four years since the Bajan belle released her eighth effort ‘ANTI,’ which managed to find its footing after a number of hiccups and false-starts.

In the time since, RiRi has established herself as a entrepreneurial force with her Fenty empire.

Still, this hasn’t quelled excitement for fresh material. If anything, the hiatus  has heightened the buzz.

But despite promise of a 2019 release, there’s still no album.

With The Navy swarming any and every post their leader shares on social media, she’s finally responding.
