July 19 brought with it the gift of ‘The Gift,’ the Beyonce-curated companion soundtrack album to Disney’s live action remake of ‘The Lion King’ (in which the Pop diva also stars).

Launched to the masses on the back of the anthemic tune, ‘Spirit,’ the opus – described as ‘sonic cinema’ and a ‘love letter to Africa’ – is drenched in the continent’s influence and not only features some of the region’s most prominent performers like Tiwa Savage, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, but also calls on fellow Urban heavy-hitters such as husband Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and more to contribute.

As it’s collected critical acclaim aplenty since its unveiling, industry insiders originally forecasted that fanfare would be mirrored commercially when it was projected the set would top next week’s Billboard 200 (as we reported here).  With its inaugural sales tracking week behind it, however, new reports confirm it missed the mark.

The 1996 revenge comedy – which starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton – is being reborn in series form courtesy of BET+ (BET’s forthcoming subscription video-on-demand service).  With ‘Girls Trip’ writer Tracy Oliver attached to the project, Scott reunites with her ‘Why Did I Get Married’ co-star Malik Yoba to lead an all-star cast which includes familiar names Michelle Buteau, Ryan Michelle Bathe, and more.

Welcome to a special edition of Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature carved out to celebrate TV and Film’s brilliant past

Here at TGJ HQ, we’ve been looking for an excuse to shine a light on the  impactful sights and sounds of T-Boz and how her art (and art inspired by her ) played an influential role in the careers of artists who now deemed to be more influential than her.

Much like Prince and Janet Jackson, the magic in T-Boz‘ voice lay in its uniquely powerful and poignant tone and her ability to carry stories without the sprawling ranges some of her peers were blessed with.

Criminally underrated, T’s influence can heard found of Britney Spears’ debut single ‘Baby One More Time’, Toni Braxton‘s ‘Breathe Again’ and Madonna‘s ‘Human Nature’…the first two being tracks originally penned with her in mind.
