Following Azealia Banks‘ headline-making remarks on the matter it seems racism is no longer a no-go area for today’s Pop star.

Once considered a taboo topic for record labels hoping to keep their artists as PC as possible the subject is now one many artists are now expected to address as stories of police brutality against minorities continues to dominate the news cycle.

Now, ‘Man Down‘ chanteuse Rihanna is baring all on her race-related experiences within the supposedly post-racial entertainment industry.

What she said will surprise many.

Find out why below…

Whoever said R&B is dead needs to recheck its pulse.  For, this week marks the first time in nearly a decade the entire Billboard 200’s top 5 is made up solely of Urban acts (Hip Hop/R&B).

Indeed, Tamar Braxton, Drake, Future, The Weeknd, Fetty Wap, and, of course, pop queen Janet Jackson, are all in control of this week’s tally and waving the flag for Urban music high.  This is particularly the case for the latter who, as reported here, will not only bow at #1 with her long-awaited 11th album ‘Unbreakable,’ but will also break a few records along the way.

As if selling out arenas and topping charts without any traditional promo isn’t enough cause to celebrate, the ‘Escapade’ diva now has a new distinct honor to raise her glass to.  Find out what it is below and get your official chart check:

Jay Z is in quite the position.

On the one hand, he’s married to one of the industry’s most prolific stars, while on the other he’s helped create the career of her rival.

Of course, the latter refers to Rihanna – whose success (or current lack-thereof) has been the subject of much debate this year.

The campaign for her eighth studio album has been muddied and marred by under-performing singles and endless delays.

Still, in attempting to help his prized project keep up appearances, the Roc Nation mogul has offered his insight to the latest goings on in her career.

Speaking in the starlet’s latest Vanity Fair feature, Jigga muses on the her new record label, Westbury Road (which Roc will distribute), as well as Rih’s recent acquisition of her past and future master recordings. He also offers his stance on the incessant push-backs of ‘R8.’

It seems not even the all-star combo of Jamie Lee Curtis, Niecy Nash, Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Nick Jonas, and pint-sized powerhouse Ariana Grande packed enough power to lure viewers into checking out the premiere of new horror/dramedy ‘Scream Queens.’

Receiving less than a royal welcome to small screens, ‘Queens’ was trumped by ABC’s heavily promoted reboot of ‘The Muppets’ – clocking less than half of the classic puppet primetime series’ viewers.

Ouch.

That Janet Jackson reign just won’t let up!

The Queen of Pop brought even more heat to the hyper hot Miami last night when her ‘Unbreakable World Tour’ pulled into the American Airlines arena.

Jackson, 49, journeyed through 32-hits including ‘All For You,’ ‘Feedback,’ and ‘Nasty.’ As well as performing fan favorites such as ‘All Night (Don’t Stop),’ she was also sure to weave in new material from her upcoming album ‘Unbreakable’ including the Missy Elliott assisted ‘BURNITUP!’

It goes without saying that the sold-out crowd of 19,000 enjoyed in earnest.

Peep Janet, who is still very much in ‘Control,’ werk it after the jump…

Today’s From The Vault selection was unleashed to the world over 15 years ago. The R&B gem ‘Good Stuff’ by eccentric Kelis is this week’s pick.
Released in 1999 as the second single from Ms. Rogers debut album ‘Kaleidoscope,’ ‘Stuff’, like the entirety of the LP, was produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo‘s production partnership The Neptunes and features rapper Pusha T under the name Terrar – which he used when he was part of the band Clipse.

Interestingly, Kelis only cracked America in 2003 with her smash ‘Milkshake’ despite being an American artist. For the earlier part of her career, her success was only of a European persuasion, hence why the track failed to chart in the US but peaked at #19 on the the UK Official Singles Charts.
The video for the tune sees Kelis and friends breaking into a roller rink and turning it upside down. The singer can be seen rocking her then-signature multi-colored curls in the clip, which features a cameo of Pharrell and of course of featured act Pusha T with whom Rogers shares many flirty moments.
***********
If one was to ever look up the dictionary definition of “eclecticism” surely Kelis’ picture would proudly project. From her R&B siren days, to her neo-soul efforts, her punk alternative offerings and of course her EDM output (hello ‘Fleshtone’), the former Mrs Nasir Jones has done it all musically. And the results have been ‘Tasty’ (pun intended). We applaud her for not being afraid to switch it all the way up whenever she feels like it, whether it being considered a risk or not. Her authenticity is the primary reason why even when not setting the charts alight she can still be respected by critics and the industry at large and can continue to fill up concert venues the world-over.
Kelis, we salute you, and can’t wait to witness where you go next!

Your thoughts?
