Although the noughties (2000-2009) boasted of chart-topping hits from the likes of Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Fantasia, Ciara, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti, and more, as of last week Rihanna was the only woman of color to see her name printed in the top slot of the Billboard Hot 100 this decade.

Nabbing four of those entries in one year (2010), the 8x Grammy-winner sprinkled chart-toppers across the six years that followed by her lonesome and alongside top-selling rappers Eminem, Drake, T.I., and more.  Now, with the ascent of rapstress Cardi B’s breakout hit, ‘Bodak Yellow,’ Rih can finally enjoy some company.

As we reported here, B – thanks to a surge of support from fans via digital downloads, streams, and radio play – unseated Taylor Swift‘s blockbuster hit, ‘Look What You Made Me Do,’ to become this week’s chart champion.  The money move not only made her the first female rapper this century to top the Hot 100 without a feature act, but also comes with a host of other achievements including becoming the second woman of color this decade to occupy the chart’s summit.

From The Vault is back this week with a yet another Urban classic courtesy of a a prolific femcee and a premium R&B songbird.

Today’s pick is ‘Gangsta Lovin’’ by Eve and Alicia Keys.

After the chart success of previous singles ‘Who’s That Girl ?’ and ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind,’ the pressure was on for the Ruff Ryder‘s star to keep the momentum going after her breakthrough era. And that’s exactly what she did in 2002 with ‘Lovin’’.

The first offering from the rapper’s third LP ’Eve-Olution’, it featured then-new Alicia Keys, who was riding high from stellar reviews and sales of her debut album.

Murder INC’s Irv Gotti served as producer. Already known as industry exec, he was (at the time) becoming noted for crafting hits for the likes of Jennifer Lopez; namely ‘I’m Real (Remix)’ remix and ‘Ain’t it Funny’ – which both went #1 in the US.

‘Lovin” became a worldwide hit peaking at #2 in the US, #4 in Australia and #6 in the UK. Billboard named it the 19th biggest song of the year 2002.

Director X – then Little X – directed the summer-soaked video. E-V-E and Ms Keys can be seen lounging by the pool and on the beach. A life of luxury.

*******

We’re still waiting for a proper follow-up era to this from Eve; her tone and flow would work wonders in today’s musical landscape especially with female Hip-Hop garnering attention again. As for Alicia, we need her next album to be a bit less ‘Here’ but more ‘Gangsta Lovin’’ and ‘No One.’ Strong melodies, with street but sweet appeal.

Before these ladies grant our wishes, we’d like to know: when it comes to the “greats”, is there a rap-sung collaboration you’re still waiting to witness?

The musical treasure that is Brandy Norwood has had an eventful week.

After fans of the Pop princess Jennifer Lopez took to social media to claim that they felt slighted by an image the singer shared online, the ‘Full Moon‘ empress now finds herself feuding with one of the most valuable pieces in her discography’s puzzle…Tiyon Christian.

Tiyon’s lyrics and vocal arrangements can be heard of cuts released by the likes of Lopez, The Backstreet Boys and Tamar Braxton as well as Brandy with whom he enjoyed a friendship for years.

Alas, the pair’s creative pie has crumbled in recent years.

Rotting at the root of their latest rumble?

Mariah Carey…or at least a debate surrounding her vocals.                             Christian took to Instagram to reveal he had received texts from friends claiming an old friend of his had mocked his recent take on a Mariah number.

Hours later, Christian shared the message he received from Norwood in response.

Here’s hoping they work things out.

After watching sales of her music decline, the multitalented Lady GaGa now enjoys life as a bonafide multi-hyphenate star, soaring in music, fashion, television and film.

This year, it appears she’ll be adding wife to that list following reports that she is planning to wed Mr. Christian Carino.

‘In Touch’ reports:

At the moment, they’re planning on getting married in Italy (“Champagne will be flowing throughout the day, and appetizers will be served before guests sit down for a five course Italian feast”) and Malibu. Both Christian and Lady Gaga are proud of their Italian heritage, so they’d love to go back to their roots and are talking about eloping in an intimate ceremony in Italy.

If Christian’s name rings a bell it may be because he’s played a major part in supporting the careers of the likes of Jennifer Lopez & Christina Aguilera via his work at the Creative Artists Agency.
