Hot Shot : Nicki Minaj Is In VOGUE

Published: Tuesday 21st Feb 2012 by David

Peep this shot of Pop Spitter Nicki Minaj, rocking her spread in the latest edition of Vogue Magazine.

Donning in a pink wig and colored blue, the Rapper’s feature in the publication comes in support of her new album, ‘PF : Roman Reloaded’, out April 3rd, and her upcoming movie Ice Age: Continental Drift, which is due for a summer release.

An excerpt from her interview with the mag below…

In an astonishingly short period of time, Minaj has been nominated for three Grammy Awards (Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance), named the 2011 Rising Star by Billboard magazine, and garnered Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album honors at the American Music Awards for her 2010 debut, Pink Friday. (Her second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is scheduled to be released imminently.)

Her appeal extends far beyond her legions of young female fans—whom she calls not her “little monsters” but her little sisters—to adults captivated by the unexpected cadences of her raps and the raw honesty of her words. Given her strong sartorial, and rhetorical, proclivities, Minaj would seem to prefer a riotous, club kid–ish catwalk show. But here she is at Carolina Herrera (“so regal and special”) and at de la Renta (he has been known to watch her videos on YouTube).

Then again, why wouldn’t this wildly individualistic performer, whose five-year plan includes an autobiography, a stack of Grammys, and movie stardom, defy assumptions? It isn’t the first time. Minaj discovered the power of costume when she dressed as Freddy Krueger for the “My Chick Bad” video with Ludacris two years ago. “It made me feel so free. It was me inside.”

Now Minaj is expected to be a glamour girl every day. Her ensembles—“They’re costumes, not outfits”—are often custom-made or imported from Japan, where little-known designers like Shojono Tomo supply items like the nutty plastic apron Minaj wore during New York Fashion Week last September.

(If she has yet to market her distinctive naughty–baby doll look, Minaj has already entered the world of cosmetics, launching a nail-polish collaboration with OPI and becoming a 2012 M.A.C. Viva Glam spokesperson.) In her downtime, she is far from label-obsessed. “If I can combine designer things with other things, I’m a happy camper.”

Not so with accessories. At one time she was spending $50,000 a month on “Giuseppe, Versace, YSL, and Fendi shoes. And I bought tons of Vuitton bags. When you’re a young girl from Queens, you’re going to stock up on those bags.”

Still, Minaj is adamant that her legacy will not be one of a free-spending, know-nothing celebrity. She’s planning “an enormous foundation to nurture girls.

The Nicki Minaj girl is a fun, artsy girl who can become a fierce force to be reckoned with on Wall Street! They hang on my every word, so I tell them, go to school, be ambitious. The worst position is to be financially dependent on the man.” And what of that alternate Nicki, serving her lord and master a martini by the pool? The fuchsia waves shake furiously. “I could never be that girl!”

Another point for Team Minaj.

It would seem, despite the oh so tedious efforts of her ‘haters’, Nicki always comes out on top, achieving things her rivals are too short sighted to even dream of.

Here’s to Nicki’s continued mission to infiltrate Pop culture and the critical success of the new album, which we are hoping exceeds sales of ‘Pink Friday’ in all major markets.

5 year plan has some folk’s 10+ careers down to shame. This girl has got her business plan on lock…and damn can I respect that.

Vogue you say…ha, saw that coming when she was right next to Anna Wintour during Fashion week. Well good for her, I imagine soon there’ll be college classes examining her business accomplishments because this girl has f****** done it in less than 5.

Congrats to her, looks like she’s got just a few things left on that list.

@Kat Deluna Fan…, Preach! So tired of so called ‘artists’ (whom Nicki is merely one of) who believe there is a short cut to ‘ICON’ status…, I would lol@’one line about the music’ if the fact wasn’t so depressing. Don’t get me wrong, if the music is poppin and the talent is clearly on display then sure; set up foundations, design clothing, release cosmetics and dress like a Teletubby for all I care but at the end of the day I want to hear music created by talent SINGERS, MC’s and MUSICIANS not megalomaniac businessmen and women who are more interested in spreading the scope of their ‘brand’ than releasing great (hell I’d even settle for ‘good’) music. You wouldn’t buy Bill Gates albums so why are we expected to put up with Nicki’s?

People can say what they want about MJ and Whitney no matter how short-sighted, but when they were at their peak they were untouchable. Once you recognize that acts of Nicki’s calibre are at their peak now…, well, that is not only infinitely embarrassing but actually quite insulting.

    she is doing her thing.

  7. Teflon Boy February 21, 2012

^and don’t get me wrong, I respect the grind and I respect the business savvy that goes with governing such a rise but she is in the wrong business. She is supposed to be an artist that releases great music…., her business accomplishments IMO are irrelevant.

  8. RDK February 21, 2012

TEFLON BOY,she put in mad work for her spot, look were she is coming from, nicki minaj isn’t taking no short cuts,if there were short cuts everyone would be rich and successful, she is playing her cards and it,s working out for her,she is in a place of opportunities,so she is taking advantage of them,in these time and age you got to be versatile you can’t do one craft only, you talking about you want someone that is doing music only it don’t work like that anymore,MJ and whitney are from a different time they are icons build there brands already,Mj didn’t have to do anything else but music, but for a up and comer you got to do what you have to,i see the point you are trying to make but the sad fact is it don’t work like that anymore, you think jay-z ,puffy and others built there empires off music only.

  9. Beck February 21, 2012

&thegreatlacefront….you…you almost sound like a hater?!?! Correct me if I’m wrong…and yeah Rihanna could of covered this, wearing a top the gives us a perk at the n****** on her chest because the girl ain’t got no tits…but clearly vogue wanted someone with a bigger imagination. Not somebody who does the same thing over and over, which makes her stand out and makes other artist seem like one bunch…

  20. DareToDeal February 22, 2012

Too bad she won’t be seeing the cover any Vogue magazine.

  21. MISHKA February 22, 2012
