According to Roger Friedman over at Showbiz 411, the 53 year old’s latest album is now available on Amazon for all of $0.41. Yes you read correct:
The saga of Madonna’s “MDNA” just keeps getting stranger. Even as Madonna launches her world wide tour–very successful, looks like a hit–”MDNA” is suffering. The latest situation: the album is being offered on amazon.com for 41 cents. That’s right–forty one pennies. The shipping is actually more expensive–$2.98. A couple of different companies are offering “MDNA” at this price. I emailed AbundaTrade in South Carolina. Their owner advised me: “Yes, there was a flaw in our purchasing calculator. We paid $4.86 each. We have 111 left in stock and can sell them all to you for $0.41 plus $2.98 shipping each as per our Amazon listing.” That’s pretty much as low as you can go.

Granted ol’ Madge is probably laughing all the way to the bank (see: tour gross), the Janet’s, GaGa’s, and Mariah’s she so often shades are likely cackling at this shocking low. A low which, due to Billboard rules, won’t even count towards to LP’s so-so sales.

Actually, I think it’ll count. As far as I remember, an album needs be sold for at least $3.50 during its first four weeks of release to count on charts. After these four weeks, it can be sold for any price.

I think it is good news. Even though I still will not buy it, some of Madonna’s fans who cannot afford to buy the CD at retail price can buy it on sale. Madonna is a legend, but she needs to get it together. I’m a fan, but the album is not up to par. It’s like she’s forgotten to be an artist all of a sudden. NOONE can sell by name. Christina’s ‘Bionic’, Britney’s ‘FF’ and Madonna’s ‘4’ have already proven that, so the fact that she expected to sell based on hype and one performance alone is indeed alarming. She needs to tone the arrogance down. From a person of her industry knowledge, I would expect wiser moves. First week sales are only relevant in hip-hop. An album can have poor 1st week sales but still slay if it has legs (see Goyte’s album) Katy Perry albums have legs sweetheart, so why you brought her up Im not sure. I believe all of it matters, no label wants a ton sold first week and then meager sales but if it is slow to sell initially, the label may have to do a LOT more work, promo, to increase the sales. No matter the genre. Sales are sales, profit is profit.
They are about the bottom line but the less it costs to promote, the more money they can make….hopefully. All labels would love albums to open big and continuously sell but that’s really difficult to guarantee..

I’ve seen MDNA (download) on sale in the UK for £4 since the second week of release, about $6 at the current exchange rate – which makes me a bit suspicious about the high prices some of you are quoting. Its not Amazon personally who are selling the album for 40whatever cents, its one (or more) of their marketplace sellers – not that it makes much difference.
As for those whining about Gaga, for the last f****** time she had nothing to do with that 99c sale – nobody would sell their brand new album for so little, Amazon were selling the download cheap to promote their cloud music service and they paid Interscope (and Gaga) the full wholesale price for each copy. In other words, they took a loss. She had about as much to do with selling her album for 99c as Madonna has to selling hers for 40 cents – i.e. NOTHING! The only place an artist can control prices is on their own webstore.

The way TGJ constantly skews and twists information (to the point where it damn near becomes lies) for the sake of baiting its readers, being catty, petty and/or to generate activity or a slow news day makes this whole blog a joke.
Who cares what some gas station in Bubblefuck, Oklahoma might be selling the album for Madonna’s album isn’t priced at $.41 at any half way prominent music retailer and you know it. And chances are if some private retailer indeed slashed MDNA to that minute a price, then they probably did that to a host of other titles they have in stock. My guess is that your precious Gaga’s album is probably sitting on whosever store shelf that is with a similar markdown. I’ve worked in music retail, it’s the popular selling albums that tend to go on sale with an offensively low sales price; not those that are struggling.
This is just like when Sam posted an article claiming that Madonna’s camp was blaming Chris Brown for MDNA’s lackluster chart performance, simply because tracks she passed on where shopped to him. What the hell kind of reporting is this? Seriously, where did you get your credentials? It’s beyond obvious that you have a vendetta against Madonna, probably because she’s a touted rival of some other female singer who you endorse and you resent how large Madonna’s shadow looms over her. If Madonna is on a sold out tour that’s going to net her a half a billion dollars by the end of it’s run, do you *really* think she’s in turmoil over its adjoining album not performing well.
You mention Janet, Gaga and Mariah, and how the performance of MDNA should be making them giggle. First of all, that’s stupid. Janet and Mariah are basically in the same boat as Madonna. For the past decade, they have all been struggling commercially in terms of album sales and chart performance. If one of their contemporaries album flops, then if anything, that should make them worry about how well their own next album will be received, because chances are that it will be dealt the same fate. Second of all, do you think Janet, Mariah or Gaga wouldn’t love to be out on a tour that is as well-received and profitable as Madonna’s is? If I had to choose between having a hit album, but being unable to sell out a theater, and having a poor performing album, but ironically am able to sell out large stadiums every night, then guess what I’m going to choose. Singers make change from album sales; a sellout tour playing to 50,000+ people every night at $300 a pop will buy them a mansion. MDNA may be a “flop” for Madonna’s Billboard chart run, but the tour is going to drive her to the top of another chart called Forbes. I’m sure she’s crying over that. Billboard or Forbes? *scratches head* Which would I rather rank higher on?! Yeah, so embarrassing for her.
In closing, Sam, you’re full of it. Every time I come here I’m reminded of the difference between a blogger and journalist. Sam is a bored and bitter blogger. A journalist, he’s not. I don’t know why I’m bothering even posting here as clearly this is full of people with biased opinions.
FACT #1. Mdna is currently the 5th highest selling album of 2012 internationally and like the 13th highest selling in the US. That is not a flop or ‘poor sales’. The vast majority of albums haven’t sold a million copies this year!
FACT #2 People have been saying Madonna’s career is over for 30 years and she’s still here. While Madonna is still selling over a million copies (last accurate figures had MDNA at 1.4 million copies), she’ll continue release albums. While she’s selling out tours, her career is not over.
FACT #3 Mdna may not have been to everyone’s liking but it still got very strong and positive professional reviews. It scored 65/100 on Metacritic which averages the scores of reviews. Considering critics (as well as bitching people like many here) are very hard on Madonna, I say getting “mostly positive reviews” is a success.
GaGa’s got 56/100, her last album i mean. Compare Madonna 4 years into her career to GaGa’s now, Madonna was sitting on 2 20 million plus sellers and a 9 million debut. GaGa is a joke, on the slide and the critics hate that they are going to have to eat their words for backing yet another dud horse in the race to find a replacement for their hated arch enemy. It is laughable LOL
