Madonna can’t sing – neither can Britney Spears and Janet Jackson is sure not a huge vocal talent either but they built their immense popularity through carefully cultivating their overall image – commercial, radio-friendly songs, outfits, etc.
That is what pop is about – tapping into the zeitgeist of popular culture at that particular moment. It’s about capturing the mood of the moment and becoming a trend setter, particularly for the youth.
It’s about image and having the total package. And by that standard, Rihanna is the biggest pop star in the world right now, bar none. She has barely put a foot wrong in her career choices (if not her personal ones).
She dictates trends. Yes, you may say it is all down to her stylist and team, but you have to have that certain je ne sais quoi to make it seem authentic rather than ridiculous and make other people want to copy you.
Rihanna does that and to my mind, there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s wrong with the most influential pop star right now being black?
We might not like it because as black people, we’re used to our musical stars being big-voiced belters but there is room for the pop stars like Ri-ri, the big voices like Jennifer Hudson and the soulful sirens like Jazmine Sullivan…

Rihanna and her entourage have asked disgruntled cruise line staff members to join her all night parties.
The singer is currently on a holiday cruise boat named the Mediterranean Sea with several of her friends.
Rihanna has reportedly been disturbing the crew with her incessant festivities.
The star invited everyone to a karaoke night and people had a blast belting out Whitney Houston, Katy Perry and some hip-hop tracks.

Fresh surprise indeed! Although I’m not the least bit surprised or as eager to watch Rihanna “charm” America with her contrived bad-ass-ness or pretentious awareness of being a role model. Of course she agreed to do Oprah now, and not before when she was still licking Chris Browns boot straps. Now that she’s stabilized and become a quite lucrative brand she can afford to do and say whatever she pleases. How convenient! What better way to help boost Rihanna’s unsteady public image and Oprah’s failing network ratings than to do this interview? This is extremely opportunistic and this interview will be aired to capture a younger audience. The 50, the Kardashians, Rihanna, who’s next? Rebecca Black, Nicki Minaj? This is laughable. We can expect to see a lot more trash; I guess CB is next. Oprah has lost my respect. She is no longer the reputable presence among television greats as she once was. She’s desperate! Despite the actual music that has gained Rihanna well deserved notoriety, the domestic abuse incident has tremendously contributed to her success. Let’s face it, America loves a pretty victim! I can’t imagine this much success for a Kelly Rowland or Estelle. Nevertheless, I digress. Rihanna is a huge star now. She is getting major press coverage everywhere she goes. When she walks the red carpet, young kids from the U.K. to L.A. are screaming her name. She is as far as the music industry is concerned an A Lister. Her fashion game is insane! Her people are all over the trends before they become trends. She is one of the few African American celebrities that wear couture!! The designers and labels love her because of her model looks and height. Gucci spokeperson before the age of 22, her Vogue cover is long overdue and that is only because of a hard ass, sourpuss Anna Wintour.
I’m proud of Rihanna she is doing the damn thing! She is getting the same coverage that any young, white female actress or singer (Miley Cyrus) on the fast track in Hollywood would get. What’s so wrong with that! Why not be supportive that one of our own is making it big time instead of blogging from a negative perspective!

Between May 1, 2011 and May 1, 2012, Forbes reports that Beyonce earned $40 million, thanks in part to her non-musical ventures, including a fragrance collection.
As for Jay-Z, he made millions as part of The Throne, which sold out arenas on a global tour. He stacked slightly less dough than his wife, with Jay earning $38 million between May 1, 2011 and May 1, 2012. Some of his money came from non-musical enterprises, including cosmetics company Carol’s Daughter and ad firm Translation, according to Forbes.
Together, Beyonce and Jay-Z collected an annual income of $78 million.
Second on Forbes’ list is supermodel Gisele Bundchen and her quarterback-husband, Tom Brady. Combined, the duo pulled in $72 million between May of 2011 and May of 2012, thanks to her modeling work, his NFL salary, and their respective endorsement deals.
