Brandy: The Original Triple Threat

Published: Wednesday 5th Sep 2012 by David

For many, she was the sassy teen gracing many a 90s screen in ‘Moesha‘- the series which catapulted her to fame.

For others who look beyond her role in the hit series, she is one of Pop culture’s most influential acts, enjoying a career long and prolific enough to inspire acts she now considers her contemporaries.

So now, in celebration of her career thus far and the launch of her new studio album ‘Two / Eleven”, That Grape Juice presents “Brandy: The Original Triple Threat,” showcasing some of our favorite ‘moments’ from her career by way of the clips below…

  17. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) September 5, 2012

Respect to Brandy. And I´ve always said at least she has an unique voice
But really… isn´t “The original triple threat” and “she is one of Pop culture’s most influential acts” a little bit too much??? Where is she that? Sam is so biased Writing those two sentences but always finding ways to downplay people like Madonna or Mariah Carey at the same time is simply ridiculous

Still, kudos to Brandy. I hope she has some success with this new album. And yeah all of you need to watch Whitney the Voice on that clip with brandy slaying with her vocals despite being way out of her prime already

    • Benron (King Of The Navy) September 5, 2012

      His delusion has no bounds.

    • LouLou September 5, 2012

How is it little too much? She is one of the original triple threats as far as acts out today. She has influenced artists in the pop genre, rock genre, gospel genre. People from J Moss, Karmin, Tank, Rihanna, call her the best and talk about her inspiration. Do your research. Brandy is one of the most influential r&b acts of ALL time. Unfortunately, most people won’t get it until after she’s dead and gone. I noticed that a lot of people in music are afraid to praise other artist and admit their influences. Brandy is definitely up there and anyone that truly knows music knows this.

      • YOLO September 5, 2012

        Amen @ LouLou

    • danny b September 5, 2012

Brandy is a triple threat and influential act in her own right. Just because Sam might be biased in his articles and such doesnt mean you should take away what it is that Brandy is, which is an influential urban/pop icon. There are different standards of iconic influence and they dont all rest on people who are over 40. Age is literally nothing but a number. Just because she didnt grow up in the realms of Whitney, Mariah, Aretha, Diana, etc. doesnt mean shes not an icon in her own right. In her heyday, no other black teenage female artist had a successful movie, television AND music career at the same time (in essence, she was a young Whitney Houston). Girls looked up to her, she had #1s and millions of albums sold off the board, a long lasting starring role in a popular successful sitcom that helped define a generation, and an undeniable gifted unique voice. Hell, she even had a barbie doll made in her likeness! The first black female artist to do so successfully, and only as a teenager! So yea, she may not be “selling” or do what she did maybe 15 years ago now, but she has still made her mark in the industry and shouldnt be discredited for it.

      • Luvly September 5, 2012

I was always captivated by Brandy. It’s just something special you have to have if you’re a real superstar. Brandy has all of “it” – the vocals, grace, class. She was a young woman well before she grew into one. Bran will always have my support. I go crazy for talent like Brandy’s!

2/11 will do 400k(if that) in the us and flop everywhere else.
Stop sitting up here making brandy something she is
absolutely not. This site is bias and delusional.
    Brandy hasn’t had a hit since 2004.
There are only a handful of legends from the 90’s. Brandy Norwood isn’t it.
No one believes this vocal bible s*** but your deluded stans.
Mark my words 2/11 will flop and we’re going to see who the real stans are.
Plays never say never ,full moon, adrodisiac Albums in memory of this chicks career..

    • jt September 5, 2012

How is she not a ledgend.. She was the first black Cinderella, one of the best selling females. she inspires and very well respected my top celebrities all over the world. She even is still selling and making hits on the charts while most 90’s acts are coming out and can’t even.get their first or second single on the chart. You dint have to.agree with.her being a triple threat which she has proven she is. But show some respect to history of music.

    • Jessica September 6, 2012

I guess you can’t count the Grammy awards she won back in 1998 and other awards then, you sir are a moron… FAIL!!!!

  24. LouLou September 5, 2012

BRocka!!! How can you not like this girl? One of the greatest voices ever and an amazing and humble personality to go along with it. She is definitely one of the best and my fave! Thanks TGJ for supporting my girl. I hope RCA does their job along with the fans. Let’s get this woman back on top!

  25. mobwife – don’t make me call my cousin Vinnie September 5, 2012

YESSS, that damn AFRODISIAC song & video was all that.

Brandy is one of the original triple (+) threats! Accomplished Actress, Singer, Dancer (with well choreographed steps to be honest), TV Producer and Executive Film Producer. <—- Haters can say whatever, B Rocka is a BAD CHICK!!

  26. mobwife – don’t make me call my cousin Vinnie September 5, 2012

I Wanna Be Down was that joint! Bran looked so cute when she was younger!

I’m gonna need Usher to NEVER EVER wear a white stocking cap EVER AGAIN IN LIFE! 🙂 Bran and Mrs. Shannon Brown looked cute though!

  27. A September 5, 2012

    #TWOELEVEN

Soo ready for her new album and sounds

  28. Tina September 5, 2012

Brandy honestly is the first artist I knew of to have a t.v. sitcom, t.v. movie, big screen movie, album, & endoresments all @ the same time. Not even witney or michael had that!

She has divided herself in so many areas. She had a reality t.v. show on mtv & judged on Americas got talent before her peers even thought about it! She is truely a pioneer! Barbie dolls, DKNY, hair weave…the list just goes on & on.

  29. mobwife – don’t make me call my cousin Vinnie September 5, 2012

Ahhhh, look at my DIVA WHITNEY The Voice” HOUSTON (RIP) and the heir to her throne B Rocka!…..boo hoo…..I love this MOVIE & SONG….. “Impossible things are happening everyday”!! 🙂

  31. KNUCK September 5, 2012

*In Dionne Warwick voice* That’s right!!! You h*** better pay OH-MAAAHHGEE.. She’s one of OUR damn MOTHASSSSSS!!!

Brandy continues to receive so much shade, yet has done so much for the music and entertainment industry at such a young age. But everyone wants to show much love to the next scandalous chick or maybe the most “beautiful” fair skinned chick. Brandy, honey you are a DIVA and you need to own it like you used to back in the 90’s.. yes some new so-called divas have come into the fold, but you SIT over them boo!!! Tell them fake ass divas to carry a hit sitcom, layer vocals to the GAWDS, and release some classic albums before they come for you!!

As much as people hate the starz, we are not delusional. We have RECEIPTS!!!!

    • YassBitch September 6, 2012

      Yaaaaaasss!!!!!!!

Oh? I remember when it was called Janet Jackson

  35. A September 5, 2012

Some people love to call ‘flop’ to certain artists…

but in Brandys case, she is just coming back, and curiously this is what she has in store:

    – A new album (music)
    – A returning role on The Game (tv series)
    – A role in Tyler Perrys next film (Cinema)

Exactly what she used to do back in the 90’s. And the exciting thing is that this is just the beggining. She has just returned, we dont have any idea of all the things she will be doing in upcoming months and next year.

So stop the hate, and enjoy her new journey, she is talented an has returned to stay.

    • Truth(theREALISTubitch) September 5, 2012

      Me and brandy love u

  36. V September 5, 2012

Thats right!!! She is my favorite artist! Has always been my favorite artist! WILL ALWAYS BE My favorite artist!

  37. LOURDES September 5, 2012

Brandy IS the original triple threat. She’s had her own sitcom, starred in movies, sold millions of records and for Gods sake she had her own BARBIE DOLL. Will she ever see that level of success again? Hmmm probably not, but I honestly believe that 2/11 will NOT disappoint sales or material wise. Everyone has their time, and most of your favs only have a few years left in them. They WISH that they accomplished HALF of the stuff that Brandy has. =)

  38. JER September 5, 2012

I can’t. I can’t at the same 2 Brandy stans flooding every post trying to hype her up. We’ll see what the first month album receipts say.

  39. Frachella September 5, 2012

I LOVE Brandy, and her influence cannot be denied. Nearly, 20 years in the game and we are still talking about her. Let us talk about her influence-
    1. Voice- One of the most distinctive voices in music, with unmatched tones, runs, textures to her voice. A husky smokey instrument a la Anita Bakjer/Toni Braxton. When you hear Brandy, you know it’s her and she is a testament to loud singing not being equated great singing.

    2. This woman sold a tremendous amount of units. Her songs are staples in the R&B world, from “I wanna be down” to “Almost Doesn’t Count” to “Full Moon.” She put Rodney Jerkins on the map.

    3. Not since Whitney’s emergence had a black girl really been “America’s Sweetheart.” Embraced by both pop and R&B audiences, Brandy redefined what it meant to be a pop superstar as a black girl. Countless magazine covers (17, YM, etc) that scarcely featured black girls, a Covergirl Endorcement, a television show, movies, a black barbie doll, all inspired by a black girl with braids. A signature style that had girls being “brandy” for halloween.

    4. Movie with Diana Ross? Check! First black princess with her idol Whitney Houston? Check… Being called a diva before the age of 21 and gracing the stage with the likes of Tina Turner, Cher and her idol Whitney Houston.. check.. A successful and critically accalaimed television show that ran for 6 years.

    5. Worldwide acclaim and acknowledgement of her talent by her peers and artists such as Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Melanie Fiona, Jojo, Monica, Tyrese, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Clive Davis, etc.

    6. Get ready for Two Eleven people- This is about to be her Emancipation of Mimi moment. You can never count out true talent. Give me an artist with a long career that hasn’t had a few valleys between their peeks. Brandy is about to shine.. nuff said….

  40. Boss September 5, 2012

Icon before da age of 21.

  41. jaiyah September 5, 2012

I’m just so proud of Brandy.

  42. jaiyah September 5, 2012

One more thing, Brandy better use every opportunity that comes her way. From Ashanti’s fuse news, to Tiny’s Vh1 new talk show to performing on the X-factor, the the Voice and American Idol. All I have to say is she better take full advantage of it while it’s out there.

  43. aero September 5, 2012

I JUST CANT GET INTO THIS ALIEN LOOKIN H** WHO KILLS AND PUTS VOODOO ON EVERYONE SHES AROUND CHIIII, SHE SOUNDED HORRIBLE MAJORITY OF HER SHOWS ESPECIALLY PUT IT DOWN THE BACKTRACK SUNG THE SONG SHE WAS HORRIBLE SMH AND SHE CAN NOT ACT FOR S*** SO STOP, SHE ONLY HAD (1) HIT ALBUM #BYE HER CAREER IS OVER JUST LIKE GAY J’S WIT THAT OLD ASS 1980 PRINCE HAIR DO AND WEAK HORRIBLE DOLLAR STORE ASS OFF TRACK DANCE MOVES THAT H** CANT DANCE FOR S*** LMFAO!!!!!!!!

This Fkn Woman Has Done So Much In SO Little Time Even Fake Got B!tches Like Bhoence Trying 2 Emulate What She Did In Her Early T*** Years, I Really Can’t Stand These Delusional Trend Followers Who Were Not Exposed 2 The Amazing Era Of The 90’s Where Talent Was Raw, Captivating, Original, Creatively Unmatched & Just Undeniably Revolutionary, I’m So Fkn Proud Of People Like Brandy, Will Smith & Even Non Singing H0es Like Jlo Cuz They HUSTLE & At Least They Don’t Steal Credit From Their “Ghost Writers” Cuz They Can Actually Write, Produce & B Original In Their Own Sht, No Shade But This Is The Real Queen B, Fck These Non Musical LowSelf Esteem Skin Bleaching Wanna B Riders, Let’s Bow Dwn 2 The 1 & Only Multimedia Superstar B_R_A_N_D_Y … & Yall R Welcome!

  45. credits September 5, 2012

She had so many more defining songs/videos in her career….this post doesn’t quite sum it up for me.

  46. CS9 September 5, 2012

How is she the “original” triple threat? There were many entertainers who had successful music and acting careers before Brandy was even born. I like Brandy, but her hardcore stans have always had this very annoying habit of over exaggerating her success.

Brandy can sing, but she’s never been a powerhouse vocalist like Whitney and Celine. She sold a lot of albums, but she never went diamond or had one of the all time best sellers, like Britney or Usher. She won awards, but never had any record wins.

In her prime, Brandy was a strong “B”-lister — but there was always someone more successful than her. And not to be shady, but if Brandy was the beast some of you claim she was, then she wouldn’t have ran into such a dry spell so early on (starting with Full Moon, her albums started to sell dramatically less than the one before it, and that was only her 3rd album.) Now it’s almost as if she’s starting over, trying to rejuvenate the interest she had over a decade ago. She’s waiting for THAT big comeback album that erases the stain from her decade of sales disappointments and returns her to mainstream prominence; she’s waiting for her “Mimi” album…and while I hope 2/11 is successful, I’m definitely not holding my breath that it’ll be the one that sets everything right. “It All Belongs to Me” was a flop and “Put It Down” hasn’t even cracked the top 10 on the R&B charts yet; if nothing else, Brandy should be able to score a #1 song in her own genre, yet even there she’s being met with some resistance.

I didn’t like having to write all that, because like I said, I DO like Brandy…but I refuse to be delusional and color the truth. Yes, in her heyday Brandy was exceptionally popular for a black teenage female artist, but she never owned the world. She was Adele, not even at her peak. Like what happens to a lot of child stars, as soon as she grew up, the world began to move on from her.

    • CS9 September 5, 2012

      * She wasn’t Adele

      • JER September 5, 2012

Honey don’t take it too seriously. The Brandy stans come out in droves every time she releases a new album. Every new album is gonna be her big comeback. Every new single is gonna slay. Every performance is truly an innovation lol. Now apparently she’s gonna have an Emancipation of Mimi sized moment. And apparently she’s the first artist to do film, dance a little, and whisper thru songs. Oh and she’s also the vocal Bible.

        #LordTheDelusions

      • Truth(theREALISTubitch) September 6, 2012

        @jer, pls go suck a d***

    • kimberly September 6, 2012

CS9 Thank you. I didn’t want to comment cause I would have to leave too much out. I am a brandy fan and unlike some people I have all her albums, I support her but I am not delusional. Not at all. You summarize all what I wanted to say. Good luck to her though still waitning on the new album.
I support talent and refuse to support these pop trashes that can barely hold a note and created by their record lable with no input into their craft.

nb 99.9% of people commenting on TGJ have no opinions of their own. They just recycle what people say on other blogs. Thay have not lived half of the music industry. They are ignorant. They don’t buy s***, have no knowlege of vocals and what a talent is. TGJ is beginnign to be a s*** hole

    • trillafood September 6, 2012

You’re a hater. What have you accomplished?

  47. Todd September 6, 2012

I love her voice, got all of her albums but come on…. that ”article” is just a bla bla bla

  48. B Lamont September 6, 2012

I love me some Brandy, however “Original Triple Threat” must’ve been a ploy to get more hits on this site cuz WE ALL KNOW that ISN’T the TRUTH. Triple Threat, sure she can sing, act and dance, but she was not the first…if you want to break it down and just say female and break it down even more and say black female…even if you said black female pop star. The title does not fit, you must acquit!

But as I said, I love me some Brandy and I think she’s super talented, but that title is ALL KINDS OF WRONG.

  49. Nathan September 6, 2012

I have never seen another african american female t***/or adult artist achieve what Brandy has since she’s done it.

    Brandy definitely made history.

  50. glum September 6, 2012

Yeah, she’s A triple threat but she’s not the original triple threat…what’s this dude on about?

  51. ASIPOFBRANDY September 7, 2012

I have realized that of all different types of insurance, medical insurance is the most dubious because of the clash between the insurance policy company’s
obligation to remain afloat and the consumer’s need to have
    insurance policy. Insurance companies’ profits
on wellness plans are extremely low, so some businesses struggle
to profit. Thanks for the tips you discuss through
    this website.
