On April 8th 2003, Monica released ‘So Gone’ to aid the effort that was her LP ‘After the Storm.’

Penned by Missy Elliott and Spike & Jamahl, the jam saw the ‘Angel of Mine’ chanteuse find fresh chart glory following the chart-scorching single that was ‘The Boy is Mine’ when ‘Gone’ peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Today, over thirteen years later, a new generation of music lovers have taken to the net to express their admiration for the R&B effort by creating the ‘So Gone Challenge.’

In it, said fans take on the number’s rap section with their own lyrics inspired by life, love and ‘Miss Thang’ herself.

Their submissions are pretty awesome.

That’s cool! “After The Storm” was a great album and Missy did a great job producing the album. Not to mention all the single released from this album were chosen wisely So gone”, “Knock Knock”, “Should have none better”, and “Get it Off”. Kudos to you Mo & Missy!

I really wish Don’t Gotta Go Home was the 2nd single instead of Knock Knock. It would’ve done better. Breaks My Heart was single worthy too.

I think it didn’t happen bc it was a DMX song and he was going through his ish.

      • MUSICHEAD August 13, 2016

Yea you’re right. They should’ve sent it to radio anyway. They could’ve done the video without him.

I agree. “After the Storm” was a classic album. Clive Davis asked Missy to executive produce the album after “All Eyez On Me” was heavily bootlegged in 2001. What makes “After the Storm” classic is the honesty, sassyness that Monica brought to the music.

I miss R&B music. Trap music has killed R&B. Every R&B singer wants to be a trap star now days.

Monica After the Storm was the album when it was released.

After The Storm is probably Monica’s most cohesive album to date. I played the heck out of that album in 2003. So Gone is definitely an urban classic. “Kick down your door and smack ya chick/Just to show you Monica not having it/So in love with you like a drug habit get” I still love it!

Totally agree with everything stated! Still, my favorite is actually ‘Knock Knock’ from that album!

Now pack up my things for a flight/ I got a place and fixed up nice/So don’t come knocking at my door/ I got company coming round four… Bish whet? Slayed it!

Congrats to Mo and Missy! “The First Night” is such a groovy track that reminds me of “So Gone” for some reason.

Yesss Monica. This is how you KNOW you have a Classic catalog when songs from your 2003 album are getting paid respects 13 years later. People sleep on all the R&B gems Monica has given over the years. With this next album, I want Missy to drive & Monica to SLAY.

She needs to go back to that style. If you got a winning formula keep it. Its called your legacy. I know the old monica would of never approved that wig.

She loves Atlanta and that’s great but I feel like it crippled her

Tiny and Kandis music careers were not as successful solo so atl is their home base

      monica could’ve done much more

Missy is a writer by trade. So I was shocked asf when Nicki Minaj said that she was the only rapper that wrote her own raps. I was like WHAAAAAA. Even Missy???????? Who writes by trade???????? But Nicki’s young fans put on their dunce cap and said O’daaaaaayyy.
