R&B star Monica has earned the second-highest first week sales of her career with her latest LP ‘Still Standing’. The 29 year old Grammy winner’s album sold 183,766 copies its first week on sale, in the process landing at a very respectable #2 on the Billboard 200. Justin Biber’s new LP ‘My World 2.0’ took the top spot.
Congratulations are no doubt in order for Monica. Her highest first week sales to-date come courtesy of 2003’s ‘After The Storm’; yet, in light of the current industry climate, one has every ground to say this record is arguably more successful. Unlike 7 years ago, folk simply do not buy music in the way they once did. Hence, not only is this a victory for Monica, it’s a victory for quality music!
Tidbit: Interesting to note is the fact that with these sales Monica has bested the recent sales of her contemporaries, including Rihanna, Keri Hilson, and even Mariah Carey. More power to her!

Its seems to me that all the writers on this site do this (either with reviews or stories in general) They always try and uplift who they like and find a reason to flaw others that they don’ (or ones who can give who they like competition) Let the truth be told no other female in R&B is out at this point to give her any competition in sales. This album is a 4. 5/10 at best. Everything sounds dated and her sound “monotone” “same on every track” vocals bore me. This is exactly why this is a BLOG amateur journalism at its best. You cant sit here and say that Monica deserves Praise for 180,000 records sold in the first week.. that’s a good number for her, but still lackluster sales for someone who had a show and was shoving down your throat that the record was coming out. her first single is “ok”, but it lacks power and sounds like a debutant pageant version of “I’m not going” . It peaks way to early leaving its listeners to believe there is more to come, falling flat with her starting out of the gate climaxing on the chorus.. only for that to be the highest part of the song… ( where’s the build??? boring) and the rest of the album sounds like something you have heard before. I’m sorry but this album will fail just wait and see.. and the day it does I’ll be back to post!
Monica sales might tumble over the next few weeks but it won’t be because of lack of interest or urban radio support. It will likely be because J records refuses to ship more then 400K (initial) albums to retailers for MOST of their non crossover urban artists. Monica could have easily done over 300K if J records would believe in their R&B artists like Maxwell’s and Keyshia Cole’s labels do. So yes, unless they get more copies on the shelf her album will only go gold and it’ll take about 8 months to 1 year to sell it. Rihanna and Mariah will sell more but they’ve had tons more product available for sell. J records really disgust me with the way they treat their artists. An artist like Monica could easily ALWAYS sell platinum with just the support of their uban radio play but J just won’t give them product to sell. Look at Keyshia Cole, she’s an R&B artist but she’s on Geffen, and all three of her albums have sold platinum. Monica could do the same, but won’t on J records. Not her fault at all.
I’m really disappointed they didn’t ship more for Monica because she actually has a #1 r&b hit going for her. She could have easily bested Justin and gotten #1 with over 300K, just like Maxwell. R& B music lovers do purchase if enough product is out there.

I think people are forgetting that the music industry has rapidly changed, people just aren’t buying albums anymore like they use to maybe for the past 10 years. It’s like “hm, should I get gas or buy such and such’s album?” You’re faced with an responsibly easy ultimatum. Aside from that, Monica’s presence is well needed in this current industry where everything is auto-tuned techno pop flavored. Music is in a major transition; everything is moving slow. With Monica, someone who breathes life into a song, she can actually hold her own. I mean, there aren’t too many R&B acts out there now as it is. Still Standing has the capability of releasing sentimental contemporary R&B tracks, even though “Everything to Me” was successful on the charts, it was just a throw out single and people eat it up like free lube and condoms. She has more hits aboard, if you’re willing to give her a chance.

It’s not YAWN. You need to stop giving the labels so much credit. I’m not sure what they shipped but I heard her album was out of stock in many places and they did in fact underestimate the shipment so I’m betting they shipped the usual 400K. That being said, the fact that she out sold artists who likely shipped double her amount in week one she definitely would have easily sold 300K had they doubled that shipment. They simply made ANOTHER MISTAKE, J records is one of the worst. Monica should take her goods elsewhere. She should use these excellent opening numbers and take it to a label who won’t short change her.

Monica would have probably had more sales if the record company had put enough cds in stores…. Eevrytime I called or went to a store it was sold out. I was finallt able to get the CD on yesterday, Tuesday 3/30/10 with 5 of them remaining in the store having had the sales clerk put it on the side for me till I got there. I am proud of Monica and know if more CDs were in the store/in stock her sales would have been higher…
