Hot Topic: Is Beyonce Iconic?

Published: Tuesday 6th Dec 2011 by David

For most people born circa 1990/1991, a world without Beyonce simply does not exist.

From the front woman of Destiny’s Child to the dizzy heights of solo super stardom, Mrs.Carter’s impact on Pop culture is almost as undeniable as her oft celebrated talent.

So, ever eager  to be at the forefront popular debate, we want to know.

Do you think Beyonce is iconic?

More below..

Yes, while the answer to this question may be obvious to some, there are some critics who feel she is yet to match or better the feats scored by Madonna, Cher and the like.

Arguing that, for all her accomplishments, she is yet to release material as groundbreaking  ‘Like A Prayer’ or an album as timeless as  ‘Rhythm Nation 1814‘.

Sure to divide opinion as Moses did the Red Sea, this is one question that shows no signs of dying down.

So let us know what you think!

I think she is. I mean a lot of new artist even the artists who have been around for a couple of yrs get compared to Beyonce. She is always spoken very highly of when asked about by other artist, Legends and Icons in the entertainment business.

  4. ASH December 5, 2011

  7. Erik Michael Granados December 5, 2011

Without a doubt Beyonce is an icon. I think having 15 years in the recording business and have performed for millions of people all over the world, and continuing to build an empire with three record labels associated with the Beyonce Knowles association, thats awesome. Not only is she an iconic artist, this lady is a mold for what the modern lady should embody.

  8. THE REAL TYLER* December 5, 2011

    YES SHE IS!!!!!

THERE IS NO OTHER ARTIST OUT RIGHT NOW THAT HAS ACCOMPLISHED WHAT SHE HAS

    AND IF SOMEONE THINKS DIFFERNTLY

JUST LOOK AT THE BILBOARD AWARDS WHERE ALL THE GREAT LEGENDS EXPRESS THERE LOVE, SHE EVEN GOT THE FIRST LADY TO SPEAK ON HER BEHALF AND ALSO HAS THE PRESIDENT DOING HER DANCE
    OPRAH LOVES HER!

A LITTLE HISTORY FOR YOU: OPRAH HAS HAD BEYONCE ON HER SHOW MORE THAN ANYONE IN HER ENTIRE 20 YEARS OF SHOW BIZZ!

    RIHANNA
    GAGA
    ADALE
    BRITANY

HAS NOT COME NEAR WHAT SHE HAS DONE!

I FEEL LIKE SHE NEEDS TO WIN A FEW MORE AWARDS AND MAYBE BREAK A FEW MORE RECORDS BEFORE SHE CAN BE CERTIFIED A LEGEND!

HOWEVER I FEEL LIKE SHE IS ONLY ONE ERA AWAY FROM THAT.

THE OTHERS ARE NOWHERE NEAR HER STATUS. HATE HER OR LOVE HER YOU CAN’T DENY THAT SHE HAS MORE RESPECT THAN YOUR FAV’S

    #TRUTH

  15. Jess December 5, 2011

Im not sure if she’s there yet but yes soon she will be an icon! The reason she is always 2 steps ahead of her competition is her performances! Nobody matches her live shows! NOBODY! The only person coming close is Gaga! So I think in the near future she will be considered an icon!

  16. Nai December 5, 2011

I think that Bey is a great vocalist. She is the standard for her generation. However, I think that Bey is the musical standard for a lot of “minority” groups (no shade or disrespect intended). Although she has made leaps and bounds cross culturally, when it comes to issues outside of vocal ability such as fashion or movies or philanthropy, Bey is not the first person I think of. I think that to be iconic she needs to reinvent herself in a way that is unexpected but still Beyonce. I also think that she needs to show the world that she has taken a stand for something bigger than herself and her family. She has had tons of career defining moments but other than her 16 Grammys I don’t know that a lot of those moments are memorable. For example, was the Single Ladies routine enough to make her and “icon”? I am not so sure. It was the video and the routine that make that song memorable so kudos to the choreographer and lighting team. And although I don’t think just ANYONE could have pulled that and been as big, there are other artists who could have had a similar impact given the correct platform. This is a tough one cause there is no denying that Bey is CRAY but iconic… I have a really difficult time swallowing that pill. Maybe she just needs more time.

  17. Nique December 5, 2011

Is somebody trying to start a stan war? I think so. These posts always turn messy. I see you TGJ.

To answer the question, I think time will have to tell if she’s truly an icon (and this is coming from a stan). She’s had iconic moments in her career (perfoming three times in one night at the Ocsars, performing at the inaurgual ball, winning 6 Grammy awards in one night, gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated, gracing the cover of Vogue, performing with Prince, Steve Wonder, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, performing at Glastonbury, etc, etc). However, will all that have a lasting impact, (I think it will) remains to be seen.

A MESSAGE TO HATERS, STANS, & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN: PLEASE TRY NOT TO BE MESSY ABOUT THIS. IT’S ONLY OPINIONS. THEY ARE COUNTING ON YOU TO BE MESSY! (BOTH TGJ AND THE HATERS)

    Keep it cute.

  18. MichaelJacksonFan December 5, 2011

Yes, I think so! I mean in terms of her performances, she is iconic! No woman has done what she has!

  19. RHI RHI IS QUEEN December 5, 2011

SILLY KIDS SMH… ICONS ARE ORIGINAL.. THIS BOOTLEG TINA TURNER WANNABE HAVE JACKED EVERYBODY.. BLONDE WEAVE SWINGING AND GYRATING DOES NOT EQUAL ICON HUN.. LETS MOVE ON NOW

  20. Kingphoenix December 5, 2011

Of course she is… the numbers and the talent attest to it. She has proven her self to be among the bes of the best. The better question is “what does a 30 year old icon do with the rest of her career?” I personally cannot wait to see how she will define what it means to be the Greatest Diva of All Time.

  21. b**** December 5, 2011

listen this is not a competition ok navy its just we are talkin about the truth i am an eminem biiiiiiig time fan but i need to say beyonce is an icon you cannot deny that ok her last album is not a flop but also not a mega succes b*** every artist have once an album that doesnt do that well like their other albums she will be back i think an hard for sure then but beyonce is an icon!

  22. BeyonceFan December 5, 2011

Ok Im a Beyonce fan and obviously I feel she is iconic but this is just trying to start another stan war!! DON’T FALL FOR IT!! Thatgrapejuice loves to have everybody fighting! Don’t give them what they want!

  23. b**** December 5, 2011

yees forgot she is only 30years and only for 15years in busnis so yes an icon that is going for legend fo sure

  24. Those That Cannot Do, Stan December 5, 2011

Difficult question. If by iconic you mean around for a while, then yes. If it’s by the quality of her music then no, not so much in my opinion. If it’s by achievements and her general role in the music industry then yes I think so.

It’s difficult. I don’t really think of any current singers as iconic, they’re all lacking and awards alone do not make an icon. Just something about the music industry these days. People are manufactured to fill roles, no one really pops or has a mark on history.

Still, Beyonce definitely has done well for herself icon or not.

  25. I’ma have to send her to her maker December 5, 2011

She is an icon but if she wants to keep that title she needs to stop putting out less than average albums like 4 and show ppl why she is the best.

  26. C-mo December 5, 2011

I believe she is and her best artistically is yet to come. I don’t think you can deny all that she has done and how often others are compared to her. I still believe the true test is years ahead when you she how much she has influenced those behind her though. But yes, I think she is an Icon in the making. Like others she is walking Pop Art.

  27. Delvin Jordan December 5, 2011

Beyonce is definitely an icon! Bey has accomplished so many things! She’s been nominated for 323 awards and have won 243 of them! Her music has had an impact of many people and not only is she popular in the states, but she’s global!

  28. Laura49 December 5, 2011

Rihanna Navy don’t fall for this! All they want is a stupid, pointless stan war!! Beyonce is very taleneted, NEXT!!

  29. I’ma have to send her to her maker December 5, 2011

@those you always know what to say! And I agree!

  30. pat December 5, 2011

madonna and janet together created the blue print that everyone else will always follow but put their own unique twist on..altho i feel beyonce will never match the creativity of madonna or janet…she is definitely the icon of her generation……

  31. ABC December 5, 2011

She’s on her way to becoming an icon…10, 15, 20 years from now people will still remember Beyonce, her music, and her incredible stage presence/performances

  32. Roman December 5, 2011

Has her sound ever evolved since Dangerously In Love, the answer is NO…

Sure she sounds great and that’s because she has an amazing voice… Nothing else… She still sounds the same… U can take any song on 4 and put it on B’Day, put it on I Am Sasha Fierce and u wouldn’t be able to differentiate…

Beyonce is boring now let’s face it, she’s amazing to watch lives but her albums lack so much… She hasn’t matured 1 bit in the industry… On the contrary Rihanna has evolved SO MUCH, she sounds soo much different that she did in her A Girl Like Me + Good Girl Gone Bad…

To me iconic is more than just selling albums, its about taking risks in the industry + not playing it safe. Finding what works for u and building on that… Madonna is iconic yes because she was so unpredictable…

The reason 4 was a monumental failure is because she hasn’t changed… With a voice like hers she could do so much more, but she tends to play it safe…

  33. Eric1_1 December 5, 2011

No, she hasnt done anything fo mi and shes not original. Comparing Bey career as of right now to Madonna and Janet is very questionable. Is she good, yes, is she iconic, no not now. Plus shes fading, time is up boo boo…

  34. JohnVidal December 5, 2011

This is one of those lame posts TGJ likes too much
I´m not gonna say she is not cos I don´t want to be called hater and whatever but I´ll tell you this:
Her music is absolutely NOT iconic, and I´m here for the music.
And if we talk about the whole package, ok if you want to call her icon it´s ok, but DEFINITELY not the type of icon Michael or Madonna are/were, not even Whitney/Mariah

  35. OH WELL December 5, 2011

    most overrated artist? yes.

  36. Prj December 5, 2011

No, she copies everything from her dance moves, video treatments, and songs. What’s so iconic about that? What about beyonce is all her own and that she didn’t get “inspiration” from?

  37. S*** (ITS R&Bey B****) December 5, 2011

@I’MA HAVE TO SEND HER TO HER MAKER

pretty iconic in my eyes. just something about her is amazing 🙂

  43. Bee Sting December 5, 2011

You decide if she’s an ICON or not. The answer is clearly evident. She is the blueprint of what a mega star is. Every female artist after her has tried to do what she does and ALL have failed with the exception of Rihanna. She is mother and all will deal.

Nope!! Those that so readily say yes are either extremely young, and have no real concept of music, or are Bey stans themselves!! In order to be an ‘Icon’, one has to be a trailblazer! Micheal Jackosn, Janet Jackson are best examples of those. They were people who completely transformed the industry with their art, ability, talent, and vision!! So many people have followed, will contionue to follow in their footsteeps. Beyonce on the other hand has most certaintly NOT trailblazed, or laid any substantiive groundwork, from which to follow. She instead(Quite craftily) has become an amalagation of many diffrent artist’, taken elements of this one, and that, and morphing them into her very image. Save the bogus claim of inspiration, the fact that if you try to break Beyonce down peice-by peice, the lack of substance is glaring!! The fact that an I’Icon’ mind you has been outed sooooooo many times, and caused sooo much controversy from the allegations of her ‘borrowing’/stealing…in the long run will not bode well for her artistry when compared against the very best int the field!!

  49. fatu sankoh December 5, 2011

YES BEYONCE IS A ICON WHY ASK YOU KNOW SHE IS GOD BLESS YOU BEY YOU ARE THE BEST

  50. Prj December 5, 2011

You guys just threw a whole bunch of facts out there. Icons are more then just numbers and sales figures. It’s about what she has contributed to pop culture that will always be remembered that counts and you can’t say single ladies because that was “inspired” by something that already existed.

  51. RatedXXX(you mad because????) December 5, 2011

what does destiny’s child have to do with beyonces solo success?

her solo success should be the only thing that mathers, when yall want to put her up against her lessors…

the word haters, dragging, should be retired in 2012..for real…..

people that uses the word HATER so damn much, needs to look up the damn definition…..

  52. College girl December 5, 2011

She’s an icon for this generation in her own right. But when I think of Beyonce I don’t see her on the same stature of an Icon like Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner. These women had a story to tell through there music; they were all original. Maybe in 10 years when she turns 40 and we are still talking about her and is belting out those vocals and performing effortless then she definitely would be Iconic. Beyonce is a great vocalist and performer but her music is not all that great. Her music is forgettable and will not be remembered 20 years from now. I think she tried to change her music this era but it didn’t work for her. And her lyrics on her songs are always so simple, plain & dull. She will be most remembered for the Single Ladies song and I Am Sasha Fierce Era. I will admit she’s a beast on the stage and no one this generation can compare to her stage presence. I just think alot of people are tired of her that’s why her album or singles didn’t do well this era.

  53. JohnVidal December 5, 2011

    Is @S*** mad?
We could make a list as big as those ones and as manufactured for many artists, but we have a life

  54. Je pense… December 5, 2011

IMO she isn’t – and I love her! Bought all of her albums and love watching her perform. HOWEVER, what’s missing is my opinion is experience. I feel like she has nothing to talk about that I can relate to, like she hasn’t been through anything that makes you say THIS IS LIFE. I can’t relate to perfect love, sexiness and stardom ALL THE TIME. As a woman Ive had extreme ups and downs and I don’t feel that in Bey’s music…its pretty much all ups, and that’s not my reality…yea she sings about fighting for love and love lost but I don’t buy it because she obviously has not experienced love lost if she’s still with the man she fell in love with 10 years ago…ya know? anyway…thats my opinion and im sticking to it lol

  55. MISHKA December 5, 2011

    ABSOLUTELY.

  56. JuanR December 5, 2011

    Of course she is…

  57. Onyx December 5, 2011

She is a Super Star, she would be a Legend, but she would never be in the same Level of Cher, Madonna or Janet Jackson, no matter how much she achivied, all depends on whether you’re a fan, of course they love to compare it with legendary singers, i think she is already Iconic for most Black People, but once again she’s not in the same List of American Treasures like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or Ella Fitzgerald, i agree with some people that she still has to make that album, i mean every singer has what i like to call their THRILLER album, an album that become Legendary and part of Pop Music Culture. However in her right Time she would be a Legend, in Future Generations, She’s not Brithey Spears who joined the Club of Artists who were Legends before their 30 Birthday, people who Make history in Pop Music like Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and Janet Jackson.

  58. ThatLATEJuice December 5, 2011

Ch…….. @ this article that was sparked by the Grammy snub.
Girl, f*** the question. The only question that needs to be asked is why can’t she do better? Why are her STANS pulling every excuse out of hats, sleeves and cereal boxes? Her MUSICAL career is in the DECLINE because she hasn’t grown as an artist. If she knew better, she’d do better. But she wont seeing as how u delusional stans overlook the fact that her material MEDIOCRE. She has a nice voice, thats about it. When it comes down to musical creativity, she FAILS! Them WRITERS and producers can only go so far. Scratch that, they can go farther…but Ms. B is STILL stuck on the same s*** musically, hence why SHE CHOOSES to keep doing the same s*** over and over.

She needs to relax and rethink her career…

    December 5, 2011 at 10:48 am

BEYONCE WISHES SHE WAS ICONIC SHES NOTHING BUT A HUGE COPYCAT WITH ALL THE TOOLS FROM YOUTUBE TO COPY AND PASTE …….

  64. Ricky December 5, 2011

I personally don’t think she is an icon yet, but she has been close and has what it takes. She slowed down her pace with this album with NO hit song. She needs to make a “thriller” type album. She still hasn’t done something legendary like that, hopefully she does. The IASF era was so epic with that tour and Single Ladies, etc! She should have done something bigger afterward. She obviously thinks she’s an icon that she doesn’t need to prove anything… I hope those 2 Grammy nods were a slap in the face!

  65. Beyjaykan December 5, 2011

King B is iconic and a legend. Call her what she is now, do not wait until she’s dead to define her. I know most of you be hating on her, still you have to be respectful she deserves it. She gave us a new word “bootylicious”, she got everybody doing the “oh,oh” dance from Mo’Nique to Oprah, she got everybody saying “to the left, to the left”, she got everybody doing the “single ladies” dance from a Baby to the President Barack Obama. She broke her own record on winning 6 Grammys in one night, she performed for Mandela, the list goes on and on so yeah she’s iconic and legendary her name stands alone BEYONCE!! People get the flowers when you can still smell them.

  70. SNAFU December 5, 2011

    She’s definitely this generation’s icon.

I love her, but I do agree that a lot of her music lacks substance (with the exception of most of ‘4’). If she keeps growing, she’ll have a timeless classic on her hands. I think she tries too hard yet not hard enough sometimes.

P.S. To figure out if she’s an icon, Destiny’s Child DEF factors into the equation. Even Michael started off in Jackson 5, which was his initial platform (not that B is MJ, but…)

**Sam obviously did this post to get people arguing, btw. **

THRILLER is the best selling album of all times, with 7 Worldwide successful singles like The Girl is Mine, Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin, P.Y.T. (Pretty young Thing), Human Nature.

Can someone explain me where are the similarities with Beyonce’s 4.

  74. Those That Cannot Do, Stan December 5, 2011

If the reason for believing Beyonce is an icon is because of the awards she’s won then I’m guessing these are the same folks who consider Katy Perry equal to Michael Jackson. Cue eye rolling.

I think you can defend her role as that of an icon without rolling out a laundry list of accomplishments, or else you believe someone who has less or different awards than her (Stevie Wonder) is somehow deficient. Don’t be sheep.

  82. Ricky December 5, 2011

@S*** (ITS R&Bey B****) But Thriller will be remembered forever more than 4. 4 might have better songs, but the actual era it’s coupled with isn’t as iconic. I felt like Beyonce was trying to be Adele this year but it flopped because people want BEYONCE – the fiercest diva to walk the planet, they don’t want slow soulful songs, not from her. Bey can do the slow songs but she exaggerated on them in the album. And the fast paced songs weren’t catchy enough. 4 will quickly become forgotten unfortunately. She needs to make a new album, with truly FIERCE songs and sweep the grammys again

I don’t know if I would consider her an icon at this point in time. She has had great success as a solo artist as well as a memeber of DC. I still don’t know if she is indeed ICONIC! I do see her becoming a LEGEND/ICON if she continues on her musical journey. #justmyopinionfolks

    Listen is a classic ballad

What more do you want from the girl?

l am pissed at her for the 4 era but the girl is the MOST ICONIC SINGER (MALE AND FEMALE) of her time. She represents the 2000’s like nobody…l give credit when credit is due.But she seems to take her career for granted, she aint focused anymore so her iconic status is not in danger but someone else can pop up and take the title of “THE MOST ICONIC’ if she doesnt revent herself or go harder. ie Adele,Nicki,Gaga etc

  88. Riconic (Rihanna + iconic) December 5, 2011

    WHAT A JOKE!
Beyonce an icon? For what- stealing other peoples ideas!!!!

Rihanna is an icon because EVERY SINGLE video shes put out in the last three years are memorable and groundbreaking, man down, california king bed, s&m and we found love and of course- Russian Roulette

Beyonce’s music does not have wide ranging themes, all she talks about is love, getting over being heartbroken and being in love again. Thats why her videos are so dull.

Lady GaGa and Rihanna have been slaying for years now.

  89. ThatLATEJuice December 5, 2011

  92. Girrrl December 5, 2011

Nope not an icon because she openly steals video concepts and lyrics. When Remember the time came out did someone have proof MJ stole that concept from someone else? Nope because MJ was original. When Billie Jean came out no other artist had the ground light up. When thriller came out there had been no other video like that before it.

How can 4 be better than thriller when 4 was formatted after 21 to garner those Adele sales?

Look at the concepts of the songs on thriller. Monsters, denying to be the father of a child etc. How can 4 be better than thriller when Beyonce tried to recreate wanna be starting something with end of time. The entire 4 album is about love, a fake female anthem, and a contrite look back on her career.

I could go on and on but Beyonce has to be original to be an icon.

I Think Beyonce is an excellent performer, the best of this generations, but she isn’t original and I never really hear new artitst states that Beyonce is there idol. She can perform her but off, but do she have her own style. Now I do think in the future 5 years from now we can debate CB can be an idol, once he work on his singing and dancing at the same time. I think know one can top him in dancing and his performances is off the chain, but he haven’t achieve the ability to do both at the same time, but he has his own style with a little of MJ in it. I don’t want people to say that he copies Mj, because MJ didn’t do all those flips and some of the dances that CB does. When I watch 106 and park and majority all the new male artist states that CB is their idol or they want to be like Chris Brown, I really don’t hear that with Beyonce, except for the old artist giving her props, like Stevie wonder. I am talking about new artist, who came out and said that Beyonce is their role model, Keri Hilson, Ciara, I am trying to think of some new artist. You have MINDLESS BEHAVIOR, JUSTIN BIEBER, JAWAN HARRIS, the list goes on of people who is aspire by Chris Brown. If cb can master the art of singing and dancing, we will be debating about him in 5 years from now. Its not about awards or sales, its the impact you leave on people who follow you.

madonna is a good artist , but she wasn’t only just an artist

  100. Courtney December 5, 2011

No she’s not an Icon yet she’s not been around long enough and awards don’t mean anything at the end of the day other than an ego boost. like screen legend Joanne Woodward said after she won an oscar “its fun for five minutes until you get back to your seat and realize it’s a statue”. granted in her 38 year big screen career Ms Woodward was only in 27 films and was nominated for five Baftas 5 golden globes 4 oscars 3 NYFCC’s 3 KCFCC’s 2 broadcast film critics awards won that oscar and a Cannes award something Bey will never do.

  101. HaterzStayPressed December 5, 2011

I think Beyonce is one of the hardest working performers out there. Her stage presence is beyond reproach and her vocal ability is amazing. I think Beyonce has the potential to be an icon, but to me she isn’t there yet. I will tell you what icon means to me.

When Michael Jackson died, the entire world STOPPED. From Iran to Pakistan – From Russia to China… the world literally stopped. It was on every news station… regular programming was suspended to report that Michael Jackson died. Internet sites crashed. Twitter came to a stand still. Casinos in Las Vegas blacked out. People gathered in Time Square to look at the ticker that announced Michael’s death. It was a sad, but historic moment because an ICON had died.

Same thing happened when Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. died. The entire Las Vegas strip blacked out for a moment of silence.

    But back to Michael.

At the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum, there was a display placed behind glass of course. It was a stool with Michael’s iconic briefcase opened with his glittery glove, his fedora, and mic stand. A spotlight was shining down on the display and it simply said MICHAEL JACKSON.

You knew it was from Billie Jean
You knew it was Michael Jackson
You knew from what live performance that was from
And you knew it was ICONIC

No matter the age, what generation you were born in… whether you born in 1940, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 2000 you KNOW MICHAEL JACKSON. Whether you love or hate him you know MICHAEL JACKSON.

Now, with the framing of ICON in mind… can you say the same thing for Beyonce? When all is said in done, will Beyonce be remembered in 50 years? In 100 years? Will books be written about her? What is her IMPACT? She is a grand diva of epic proportions and not a lot of R&B females can SEE her on that stage. But what more is there?

The term ICON is used too loosely this day and age.

    @RATED XXX :

    with all due respect :

why alicia keys is a legend ?!

    what make her legendary ?!!!!

i got all of her CDs , but c’mon , not her or beyonce are legends !!

i wanna know when ppl gonna say “now that’s legendary ” and then it is THAT and it is stay like that ! like what are your STANDARDS for labeling someone/something “legendary ” ?!!

” not you specifically , but speaking in general ” !

cuz i don’t consider any artist a “LEGEND” !! i consider them “REvolutionary” , that will sound proper !

    so ….

  104. zania December 5, 2011

And if you are talking about her vocal, Jennifer Hudson sings and act better than Beyonce, that is why Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar, but Beyonce is a better performer than most, but her songs are not legendary, Single ladies. Aretha franklin, Micheal Jackson, has songs that my grand children and their children will listen too. Single ladies was a hit song but not special. Michael Jackson Thriller came out in 80″s and the kids of the 90’s, 00 know that song and dance to it, he have his own WI game to that song. Do you really think in 10 years the young kids will be singing Single Ladies. No shade, But Beyonce has to release one memorable song before I call her an icon. She has all the achievement, but what has she done for the young ladies coming into the business, to follow to say I want to be like Beyonce. Most artist can sing better than she can , like Jennifer Hudson, fantasia, Alicia Keys, they are not dancers, just singers. What can my future daughter get from Beyonce, that she doesn’t already know how to do, booty shaking. Every young urban girl can booty shake better than beyonce. I saw a 5 year girl dance better than Beyonce. What is she bringing to her craft that is her own?

  105. kcity28@yahoo.com December 5, 2011

Is the sky blue, or the sun hot? One thing that is clear is that Bey has certainly reached icon status. This feat was already established well before this current phase of her career. Beyonce’s contribution to music is tremendous, it’s very evident in all her work over the last 10+ years. You can check the receipts (from her stint as the front woman in the best selling female group ever, Destiny’s Child to her ground breaking accomplishments as the new millenium’s decade female solo artist, you’ll find plenty of proof). The 00’s was all about Beyonce and she single handedly owned it! Anyone with a shred of honesty in them will admit it. The icing on it, is that she has build a reputation for being one of (if not the leading) performer of her generation. Beyonce was here! She will be leaving her mark when it’s all said and done. Hate it or love, you can’t deny it!

@The term ICON is used too loosely this day and age.

it is used to loosely… some people think if ur an icon u can be compare to legends…

no u cannot…..its easier to become an icon than a legend…hence me saying legends are born, not created….

i say beyonce is an icon because, yes she can put on a great show, yes she can sing, yes she has alot of awards…compare to keri, ashanti, fantasia, ciara, shes an icon

but if u look pass all that, her music is no different than the so call lessors

  107. Kingphoenix December 5, 2011

How the f*** are you going to compare Joanne Woodward to Beyonce, that makes no sense…We are talking about her music career not her acting. If anything you can compare her to Barbara or Cher, and i would say hey those are to music legends who are great actors and Beyonce should pray to get to their levels, but Joanne Woodward? She’s great but saying her achievements are something Bey will never do is dumb as a f***.

  108. Onyx December 5, 2011

Elvis presley, Frank Sinatra, Michael jackson, Madonna, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen are American Symbols, American People who conquer the World, People who are held throughout the world, we are proud of these people not of Beyonce.

  109. Music Expert 22 December 5, 2011

    Beyonce is definitely an icon

On her way to becoming a legend

  110. zania December 5, 2011

@RATEDXXX, I really agree with you, she hasn’t left an impact on music. She doesn’t have her own style. Diana Ross , is a legend, she had her own, style from hair and music, Tina Turner had her own style with those wild wigs and wild dancing in the 50’s and her music. Madonna has her own image and style, she came out talking about like a virgin and took the s** act to extreme and her music. How many young ladies these women impacted during their careers from their style to their music. What has Beyonce did differently or when we see Beyonce, what can we say is her own style she created, booty poping, something that Jlo could do and Shakira. Her vocals, there are so many artist who can sing better than her. People saying that she is an icon because of all the weak artist out today, makes her an icon. I don’t think so. She stands out because of the weak talent in this generation, but would she stand out when there was a whole lot of competition, like in the 80’s and early 90’s, I don’t think so.

WOW i could have sworn it was a Stan war over this question a few months ago. and the question is Icon and people are fighting over legend. and Why Does MJ pop up every time Yes thriller was a great album but all of MJ material didnt do what thriller did like all of beyonce Material wont do what DIL DID or single ladies. Every Legend or Icon will have some one sell more album or singles or chart better them but that doesnt make you a legend it the support of the people that makes you a legend you may not sell a million album another day in your career but you can still sell out a arena with 20,000 people after 25 years in the game thats a legend. And beyonce is working on that.

  114. oh baby December 5, 2011

Yes Beyonce is an ICON,so is Britney.

Beyonce made a name for herself just off her performance skills alone.
Not to mention tracks like Crazy in Love, Irreplaceable, and Single Ladies were hits (some of them being cultural phenomenons),the Grammys, performing for Obama,The Philantropy,The empire that eclipsed J.Lo’s, and the various accolades and reciepts accumulated over the years.

Rihanna and Gaga have the potential to be ICONS as well, but they have to accumulate more time and experience.Just because you have a high number of #1s,Youtube views, and Twitter followers does NOT mean you are automatically considered an Icon.

  123. Ricky December 5, 2011

Just to clear up the nonsensical rubbish some of you ignorant fools are posting above me: We can’t really compare Artists of modern day to artists before us. The truth is, Michael didn’t invent the moon walk, but it was performed hundreds of times before him from the 30’s, he was “inspired” by it and made it more famous than any of his predecessors could! Most people don’t know this, and it’s because that sort of information wasn’t made readily available. Beyonce is vastly “exposed for stealing dance moves” on Youtube, yet there was no twitter or youtube to expose Michael the same way in his time. The meaning of an “icon” has vastly changed because of what influences the making of an icon. Media is on another level. Beyonce is the closest icon, relative to our time. No one, not Rihanna, Ciara, Britney or Gaga can surpass the level of stage presence and vocal ability, natural talent and entertainment that Beyonce can offer.

  124. CAll me in 20 years and we’ll see. December 5, 2011

I think she’s a good entertainer, but not iconic. She’s more like someone who had their moment in the spotlight and then gradually faded away. I would say Britney, even with her breakdown and the lackluster sales of FF, is more of an icon than Beyonce.

WHAT HAS SHE DONE TO DISPLAY HER TO BE ICONIC? NOTHING
WHAT HAS SHE DONE OR MADE…? NOTHING BECAUSE SHE DONT DO S***

WHAT SPECIFIC SOUND DOES SHE HAVE? NONE BECAUSE HER MUSIC IS WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY SOMEONE ELSE.

BEYAWNCE IS NOT ICONIC AND I AM OFFENDED ANYTIME SOMEONE MENTIONS HER WITHIN THE SAME HOUR AS JANET AND MADONNA.

The J.Lo name is already an EMPIRE.

    Beyonce is already an Icon.
She already was at that status with Destiny’s Child. I find that most people saying no don’t like her.
Beyonce is on her way to legendary.
Stop comparing her to the likes of Whitney,Michael,Janet, etc

    this was an different generation.
to be honest the true trendsetters were
    Stevie Wonder,Aretha,Ella,Frank Sinatra,Billie Holiday,Ray Charles,Ruth Brown,James Brown,Mahailia,Mattie Moss all the old school TRUE LEGENDS.

    Micheal,Diana,Tina,Whitney,Janet,Madonna,
All came after them during the real commercialization peak of the music industry.

however by no means should an Rihanna Stan or 90’s baby try to say who is icon.
Truth is real music stopped during the early 2000’s.
Now you have to make slow gloomy ass music to be considered real.(i.e Adele)

I think Beyonce is an icon. She is the entertainer that the new generation will look up to. That being said…I see where people criticize her for “lack of growth”. When Run the World first came out, I was like WTF is this. Lyrically, is just juvenile. But I understand that she was trying to take risks musically, and I respect that. I think Sasha Fierce and 4 are albums where she is trying to experiment with her sound and I commend her for it. Songs like I Care, I Miss You, Love on Top, If I were a boy, that’s why you’re beautiful, disappear- we probably won’t get them now, but will appreciate it down the line. But lyrically, she needs to stop the slang and and everything else and mature. Make music that others want to do covers of 20 years from now

  134. Group TOP FLIGHT December 5, 2011

This is her team looking for ideas of what to STAGE to make her an icon.

She is not and will never be, she already soiled her LEGEND/ICON status by COPYING other peoples work (its well documented)

She has been DISQUALIFIED and may as well set her sights on something else, like being a legendary and iconic mom to her child.

  135. Independent Thinker December 5, 2011

Icon is such a loose term these days. If you think about it, every one in pop culture has been called an “icon” for some reason or another; Britney Spears(why, I don’t know), Rihanna(for her style of course, but even that is laughable), Justin Timberlake(how in the hell?), Kelly Rowland(yes, even Kelly has been called ‘iconic’. Love her or hate her she’s still a vet in this industry and her peers respect her), Lady GaGa(and she’s only been around for two seconds), Christina Aguilera(VOCALS for days, and her first two albums, Stripped and Back to Basics were CLASSIC. The divas of yesteryear would be proud), then, there’s Beyonce(MARKETABLE for days, and as a performer she has worked very hard to become the stage stomper that she is, but….), she’s still not doing anything that hasn’t already been done. None of the aforementioned are.

So as far as I’m concerned, she can have the term icon. They all can. Call me when someone from this school of wanna-be’s becomes LEGENDARY. Oh wait, that wont happen because in order to be a legend you have to be an innovator, a trailblazer, unique and talented in such a way that no one else can do it quite like you no matter how hard they try. None of the acts that I mentioned have any of those qualities, and the ones that come close, have traded in their artistic integrity for flash-in-the-pan singles that top the charts but have no staying power. It’s all forgettable, or comparable, two things you don’t want to be if you ever hope to reach legendary status.
The funny thing is, Beyonce made “icon status” her goal. WHO DOES THAT?! Back in the day artists didn’t go into the studio thinking, ‘O.K. I need this, this and that so I can become an icon by such and such a date.’ They just went into the studio and made the kind of MUSIC(the real stuff) that would resonate with people for years to come. Music that would insure they received recognition 20 to 30 years after their era. Consider the fact that Earth, Wind and Fire(the best band of all time) was just recognized AGAIN for being the amazing, innovative musicians, writers and vocalists(Philip Bailey is incomparable and Maurice White is a signature singer) that they are. Gladys Night was recognized. Then consider others like Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding(soul singers) to name a few. Consider performers like James Brown, Sammie Davis Jr. ,Tina Turner, Janis Joplin and more(they were new, fresh and authentic, each with their own signature). Consider groups like the Temptations, The Four Tops, Smoky and the Miracles, The Jacksons(that whole Motown sound), then groups like the Ojays, the Commadores, The Brothers Johnson, Brick, Parliament, the Ohio Players, the Average White Band, Blood Sweat and Tears(innovative BANDS and SANGA’S). I could go on and on. Stevie Wonder was in a league all his own. I’ll save my absolute favorites for last. Minnie Riperton and Donnie Hathaway. These two are incomparable. NO ONE FROM TODAY’S GENERATION OF POP TARTS CAN SING OR EVOKE EMOTION THE WAY THOSE TWO COULD; and they were both taken too soon(they died the year I was born).
I KNOW music, and what’s being pushed, promoted and played today is a cheap imitation. Artists like Donnie, India Arie, Jill Scott, Kelly Price, Marsha Ambrosius, Anthony David(that whole neo-soul movement), as well as groups like the Brand New Heavies, Mint Condition, Toni,Tone, Tony, Envogue, and even modern r&b divas like Anita Baker, Mary J Blige, Monica, Brandy,Jennifer Hudson and even Joss Stone. Blue-eyed soul(Micheal McDonald, Micheal Bolton, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel,Steve Winwood, Remmy Shand and Robin Thicke) and even some rock and soul bands(Genesis, Tears for Fears, Hall & Oats, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, No Doubt, etc.)are the closest thing we have to what the LEGENDS used to do. Most of these artist are popular, even mainstream, but because they do not necessarily belong to the genre that is pop no one is mentioning them for icon status. But hey, why settle for being an icon like everybody else when you can follow in the footsteps of legends. While I do see that Beyonce is clearly influenced by legends, she is not cut from the same cloth as they are. The only reason she’s singled out amongst her peers today is because a lot of other pop acts suck. I don’t care how many hits you have on Billboard, if you can’t sing, you can’t sing; and Rihanna, Katy Perry and even Lady GaGa are walking, talking gimmicks with no real vocal prowess. Obviously, Beyonce would look like the best next to them, but, compare Beyonce to other VOCALISTS in her peer group(Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Chrisette Michelle, Kelly Rowland, Melanie Fiona, Adele, etc.) and she just fits in. She’s not the best or worst of the bunch, she’s just one of the bunch, nothing too special. Beyonce is the best of the pop tarts. I guess that makes her iconic; and that is what she’s always wanted to be so I hope she’s happy, because I don’t really see her going any further. Not unless she takes a COMPLETELY different approach to music and becomes an indie artist or something, and even that would be orchestrated and forced. I think ICON is it for Beyonce, and that’s not saying much, when you really think about it.

  136. Group TOP FLIGHT December 5, 2011

IMO no she is not , at least not until she can actually create a classic album that can stand the test of time. Don’t get me wrong she’s a pretty girl and all, she can dance , she can sing decent enough, but it something missing to take her to that next level. She’s not ground breaking enough for my liking. She doesn’t really bring anything knew to the table that’s worth really talking about the next day. Everything she does has been done b4 and done better imo . She koo but the next Madonna, Janet, Michael, hell even Britney she is not. All her albums are average at best . The only way to enjoy her is live her music sucks and if you do not have that visual you are s*** out luck. the only classic album she’s ever been on is My Life 2 and thats not her album. Im sure musically she wishes it was but its not. Ive yet o see her really sing with someone live and let them have it b4 and you need to do that to be a diva or an icon everyone knows that. Ima just say she got the right people around her , but one day i believe she will be the icon we all know she can be but right now she just has to step her creative juices up just a lil bit more !! But I will say MJB is an icon and an i con without all that crazy stan fare .

  144. The word “icon” has been bastardized beyond belief December 5, 2011

  145. Yellow Gorillah December 5, 2011

    YES!!

    She is an ICON

What her fans and people need to understand is it is not HARD becoming a ICON!
Britney is an ICON and rihanna and gaga will become icons when time goes by.

I hate the fact people think because beyonce is an Amazing performer and has awards it makes her a icon.

To be honest beyonce is a icon because the competition NOW it WEAK compared to the 80’s and ealy 90’s.

Beyonce LACKS Originality, She Lacks SOUL. She lacks the power to even reinvent her self to the world. Her music is S***! I don’t care what nobody say’s our of ALL her song’s only TWO Might be remembered Single ladies and Crazy in Love BOTH inspired by something.

She is NOT! and will NEVER be a LEGEND!! from the looks of its he is already fading her musicality is disappearing this WHOLE era was inspired by something on YOUTUBE. Nobody know’s who she REALLY is like no shade do her fans even know her..she ha snot struggle we DON’T know her she is just a GREAT performer who has gotten fame..

Britney Spears has more chance of becoming a LEGEND then beyonce and britney has LESS Awards and some may say does not perform like beyonce but Britney has had a HUGE IMPACT hate her or love her she CHANGED the pop industry and left her mark and will be remembered in years to come.

Beyonce will Also be remembered but only for her performing Nobody will CARE about her awards or songs because they are forgettable. BUT She is a ICON Nobody can deny her that but LEGEND NO way it also makes me SICK When people put her ahead of MJ, MADONNA, JANET MARIAH, BRITNEY

    @light me UP :

you gotta build your empire with your OWN bricks ! so it can be all YOURS !

the thing about gaga , is , she can be original , i’m so sure of that , but she is ADDICTED for referencing ppl like M cuz she knows that this will create hype/buzz and add some controversy to her stuffs ! and that will make ppl talk = free promo and press = the gate to success nowadays !!

gaga is all about that ! but i do LOVE her regardless ! but just do not talk about her copying others as a normal thing , i do get pissed off when rihanna do it ! so please admit it and PASS !

and don’t give me lectures about how MJ and madonna copied others , i do know that , but they continued building their empires after that with their own bricks 😉 !

So you support Gaga even if you know is a replica of Madonna’s Career.
Michael jackson and Madonna, both give a new sound to Music, Both are Kings of Pop, a title that a lost artists want, so you will be happy if in 10 years, a new singer took the name of Mother monsters to Gaga, just like some Little Monsters want to took that title to Madonna. It is ok to have influence, inspirations from other, but make an exact replica of what others have already done before is just insane. To me an artists has to come with something new, contribute something to Music. I like Gaga but she wants us to believe that she’s a freak, something scary (like oh i’m cool, because i’m out this world), C’mon you want to see a Badass man, something really scary and totally original, go to see Marilyn Manson, he came out with something new, but even with all his outrageous things people get tired of him, just like people would be of Gaga. She has to be normal for once.

    @JI JANE

ALL the new Girls are WEAK compared to the Legends including beyonce and beyonce is NOT Faaaaaaar better then everybody. This is what I’m talking about JUST because beyonce can perform better then everybody does not automatically make her BETTER because she LACKS Originality that Gaga has, She LACKS the Good music that Rihanna has, She LACKS the Pop IMPACT that Britney has sooo no she is not FAR from everybody they all have their strong point’s I’m just saying I agree she is an icon for her age group as there are not a lot of great artist to even pick from…

put it this way if beyonce came out solo in the early 90s nobody will be calling her an icon, =]

90′s: Mariah; Madonna; Whitney; Janet; Celine

    Vs

00′s: Beyonce; gaga; Rihanna; Britney; xtina

The first 5 are legends/icons. The second 5 are just the best of a bad bunch.

    +

these days, there’s no such thing as “icon” among the current crop of artists. just a bunch of pretenders to the throne.

    *Sips M***** Juice*

The music INDUSTRY has changed Sooooo much compared to when the REAL legends and ICON Walked the stage *Sighs* but it is what it is beyonce and britney + Usher are our icons and lady gaga and rihanna will join them THEY ARE ALL WE HAVE!

One reason Beyonce isn’t an icon or did anything iconic, If she was so amazing you would have 85% of the world agreeing that she is a icon, On twitter the other day they were saying that Rihanna was better than her. Everyone loved Michael Jackson especially before the child m******* case, he moved the world. Beyonce doesn’t have over 75% of the world agreeing that she is the best and is a iconic. You should read the comments on the mainstream blogs this past summer when they were trying to say she was iconic, it was a 50% disagreement, most people say she is a excellent performer, but she isn’t iconic. So when come out with a album or songs that will last for 20 years, and she come up with her own style than maybe she will win over the other 50% of the world.

  178. b**** December 5, 2011

@INK MJ children saidn the same thing about Chris Brown. Actually paris called CB a legend and I am a huge CB fan, he has some ways to go like maybe 10 more successful years in the music industry before I call him a legend. Beyonce isn’t no legend or no icon. I don’t hear young girls saying that they want to be like Beyonce or new female artist say that they are inspired by Beyonce. I hear more young artist say they are more inspired by Chris Brown than Beyonce and CB only been in the game for 6 years.

  183. bey’knight December 5, 2011

YES, she is a pop icon. of all the acts that emerged in the late 90s/early 00s, Beyonce and Britney are the only people i’lll say have become icons whose relevancy wont wane one bit if they never released an album again . Now they’re iconic very different reasons. it’s like Madonna vs Whitney. i think Gaga will be iconic too, even if she never gets a hit on billboard again people will still talk about all things Gaga. Now Adele, if she plays her cards right can become iconic too but then again maybe she doesnt want it cus there’s a price to pay, u have to compromise, people wont buy 21-esque albums from her forever. I hope she doesnt become another Amy who abused her gift or a Norah Jones or Duffy. i dont see girls like Rihanna or Nicki ending up iconic at all, in fact Katy Perry in my book has a better chance of becoming an icon than either of them. ive kept a keen eye on the way America has treated both of them this past era but it’s too early to manifest to the average folks. Contrary to what her stans think, Rih is very much a sprinter, she lives on the momentum

@INK so you think that single ladies is on the level of Thriller, by Michael Jackson or Respect by Aretha Franklin, Or I will always love you, by Whitney Houston, I am not even going to answer your question. Look at the songs that I named and you answer your own questions. They play CB Forever song at weddings, movies, actually a new movie that is coming out is playing CB song. Forever is more lasting than single ladies.

  190. Please stop comparing everyone to MJ. There was only ONE and will never be another! December 5, 2011

Rihanna is more of an icon than Beyonce, i think, because at least she’s had a different look and sound for each of her albums, even if she didn’t become commercially successful until GGGB. True, she’s not much of a dancer or singer, but I think she has more of an “IT” factor than Beyonce. Shejust needs to avoid the breakdown I’m afraid she’s heading for if she doesn’t slow down and rest.

As for GAga, I think she has the *potential* to be an icon but she needs to rest the halloween costumes and value menu album deals and single white female-ing Madonna, and work on putting out strong quality material instead of thinking up ways to shock people. I dno’t want/care about shock tactics, I just want good music from Miss Germanotta.

  215. bey’knight December 5, 2011

Im glad yall are resorting to bringing up the legends Whitney & co to try to discredit Bey’s accomplishments. every single and i repeat everys ingle one of those legends have commended her efforts. She has STEVIE WONDER serenading her on her bday, she wasnt even at his show to PAUL MCCARTNEY attending her intimate show to TINA TURNER declaring Bey a better performer than she was inher days to PRINCE covering her song on stage to MARIAH desiring a duet with her and MJB declaring her an inspiration just to say a few. Those legends dont need u tryna bring down Bey using their names; Bono, Barbra, MJ all of them adore. They are the ones who know what it takes, they are the ones who accomplished greatness not u 90s babies sitting behind ur computer bringing up artists whose cds you’ve probably never listened to

  216. I’ma have to send her to her maker December 5, 2011

@S*** just like your name you are worthless. And why knock me for having an honest opinion? 4 was not epic. And I said she was an icon FOR NOW but she could just as easily lose that title and have ppl be doubtful about it if she would stop being so predictable. Like Roman said, she needs to take more risks. That’s what icons do. That’s what mj did, madonna did, prince did, and a bunch of others. Jus sayin. You don’t need to be scornful with me so you shut the f*** up and reply to ppl with more grace, politeness and intelligence, idiot loser.

  217. Lioha December 5, 2011

    just insincere fame w****!

  218. bey’knight December 5, 2011

do u really think any artist today will have the kind of impact Madonna, MJ had in their days when people actually paid for music? when u know u gotta sit ur behind, listen to the radio or watch that big box called tv if u wan see ur fav? now fans are seeing their favs act a fool on twitter, have their news posted every damn 5 mins on the internet….the internet that is now more accessible to me than my tv at home, think? think!

  219. J December 5, 2011

    HELL NOOOO!!

  220. zania December 5, 2011

@Bey Knight if she is so great why didn’t her album sell like Adele and why didn’t she get major grammy nomination. I don’t care how many times other celebrities are trying to convince the world how great she is, it isn’t working. She doesn’t have memorable songs and that list that @ B**** listed is a joke. Go up to a an old white lady and ask her if she knows the song single lady and than ask her if she knows Thriller by MJ and see the answer she gives. Beyonce is not iconic and people cannot convince me she is. She is an excellence performer, but I am not madly in love with her past songs. I liked her songs when it was out and now like most artist, her songs are old, she has no songs that can be remembered for 20yrs and loved by all.

  221. MusiqKinq December 5, 2011

First and foremost, I respect Beyonce. No doubt she has made an impact in the music industry, and in further endvors but to call her iconic is just mind blowing. Beyonce has developed a shell that protects her, people are afraid to call her out on who she really is. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are under her wing that would want lash out and tell her how it is. For some this may be hard to swallow but it’s true, the only reason they hold back is becuase one person can’t go up against all those lies, cover ups, scams, rip offs that she has created, one can’t simply do it alone, but if all those people that know the truth could come up and can expose her, then I’m one hundred percent certain her empire will begin to crumble. This is why she can’t be an icon, do you really think Beyonce came up with all she said she has, nope. There are plenty of uncredited people who work for her that made this sacrifice, to make her who she is today.

Finally musically she does okay for a singer! “Single Ladies” for a fact was not written for her. The-Dream sold her out on an interview (Now which cannot be found any where on the Internet.) The-Dream and Tricky were in a studio in New York working on various projects, and one of the projects was “Single Ladies”. (After Beyonce Got The Record Was When This Interview Was Taken.) The-Dream was asked; what part of the production and writing did Beyonce have with the record? The-Dream stated that “Single Ladies” had already been finished and Beyonce had compleatly nothing to with it. She was handed the record while Jay-Z was on tour becuase he herd that Dream and Tricky were in an New York Studio. He played the record for Jay-Z he liked it and asked if Beyonce could have it, Dream said yes and the rest I’d history.

If only I could find that video, I’d post it. That’s what upsets me the most about Beyonce, she takes credit for songs she had nothing to do with, just like when Ne-Yo wrote “Irreplacable”, I’m sure they would lash out at her but to do that would mean they are disrespecting Jay-Z. Her music career is a sham, so many producers and writers go uncredited! I’m truly angered now, screw what I said, I don’t respect her. She needs to except the fact that she is no one and that other people make her decisions.

  222. fab December 5, 2011

“she is yet to release material as groundbreaking ’Like A Prayer’ or an album as timeless as ’Rhythm Nation 1814‘.” SO dangerously in love wasn t groundbreaking????????? isn t that album ranked among rock n roll all of fame best album of all time???????

  223. zania December 5, 2011

I don’t even know why I am arguing with Bey stans about this, because she shouldn’t be compared to our past legend who actually had their own style their own impact on music. They were song writers and change the game for music. MTV didn’t even play black videos until MJ. Bey did nothing to contribute to music or have her own style that she didn’t steal from others. She is just a great performer who has accomplish alot. I actually think that Billboard created that award just for Beyonce, but Britney Spears actually deserved that award, she has accomplished more than Beyonce and she was bigger world wide than Beyonce.

  224. Group TOP FLIGHT December 5, 2011

You hit it BEY KNIGHT, in her stans OPINION she is an icon.

What they need to L ET GO is thinking the general public agrees with this.

The PUBLIC makes this decision, not Beyonce.

She has soiled her legacy and that is a FACT. She cannot undo all the lies she has told, and all the credit she took for things she DID NOT DO, this is not ICONIC and will never be.

  225. zania December 5, 2011

@MUSIQKING, I absolutely agree with you, I think that Beyonce and her husband has so many connections and so powerful in music that other artist is afraid to speak up. After her Billboard performance Keri Hilson tweeted that she is the best, now that is funny coming from Keri, but since then and Keri been shut out of all awards this year, did you see Keri reaction at the soul train award, when they asked her to hold the magazine with Bey and Jay on it. I really believe that some artist may be afraid to speak up because they may get black ball.

  226. SLW1 December 5, 2011

Icons are groundbreaking, revolutionary…neither of which I would credit this woman which…most of her music and the accompanying videos have a huge sampling of someone previous to her ….I dont believe that her work with Destiny Child should be included in her resume because Destiny Child is a separate entity than Beyonce….shes an awesome entertainer but thats about it…..most of wat she is doing has been done before

  227. JER December 5, 2011

No. The FACT that you have to ask if BeYAWNce is iconic means she is NOT iconic. And icon is unquestionable. An icon is undeniable. BeYAWNce isn’t an icon of anything. BeYAWNce is only an icon to teenage black girls and black queens because they don’t have sense enough to know what a real icon is. SO NO, BeYAWNce is NOT an icon. She was on the icon path, but 4lop quickly ruined that

  228. DEZI December 5, 2011

@ Ricky – Expose michael jackson? Michael never said that he invented the moonwalk and most people if not all do know that because he never said he did. He made that clear years ago, even in his 1993 interview with oprah he talks about being inspired. So don’t try to discredit him to make beyonce look good. I don’t care what nobody say if michael had stole somebody s*** you can bet we would have known about it … twitter or not. Get over it, the man was an INNOVATOR he also brought his own originality to the table – something beyonce has yet to do.

  229. Madonnalover December 5, 2011

Someone can actually sit here and say nothing britneys done is iconic or she’s not a legend? F*** out of here!! Say all you want about Britney spears, but she’s more of a legend than beyond is right now!!!

  230. MYLA December 5, 2011

Beyonce’s new concert DVD, “Live At Roseland: Elements Of 4” sold 17k copies sold in it’s first week, earning the number 3 spot behind Lady Gaga’s “Monster Ball Tour At Madison Square Garden” (28K) and Britney Spears’ “Live: The Femme Fatale Tour” (19k). And beyonce is an ICON AKA THE QUEEN LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO! SOMEBODY PLEASE! HAND ME SOME TISSUE.

  231. ERYN December 5, 2011

The beyonce era is over she is flopping from every corner. She is an I-CON. She has been conning her way to the top her whole career. KA – POW!

  232. MusiqKinq December 5, 2011

@Zania yeah that’s true! Artists are afraid they’ll get black balled! Becuase after that interview The-Dream did, within a week it was gone from the Internet. And the videos now that you hear from him talking about the production of “Single Ladies” he says she had a huge role in it. But he has that look of shame and guilt in his face, like damn I’m now apart of this big ball of lies and s***. Becuase as a songwriter you have pride, and when your pride is shot at, it shows. He most likely got slammed!

  233. Anne December 5, 2011

I do not equate legend with icon. They are two different things in my opinion. While Beyonce clearly is iconic, the debate begins when people try to suggest she is already a legend because of her iconic status. I think it’s too soon to call her a legend but she does seem to be a legend in the making. She is already respected by the legends like Prince, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, and others. She is well on her way and that doesn’t mean that she won’t have ups and downs because they all have and do. But there is no denying her potential.

  234. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    WOOWWW HATERS ARE MADDDDD…
OF COURSE SHE IS AN ICON..

And please dont come up with Rihanna, whahahaha.
Please. No competition. No discussion possible. Can take it seriously.

  235. Gigi December 5, 2011

She would like to be. But “icons” are made by the admiration of a large consensus of outsiders, not self-created or self-referenced.

  236. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    @MADONNA LOVER

AAH please, only because of the good numbers in the early ’00?
Britney WAS populair, but isnt anymore..

    Calling Britney an Icon?
Because of her sing? NOOOO (cant sing)
Because of her dance? NOO ( She cant dance anymore)

I went to a concert, just because it is britney.. But pleasee… She playbacked the WHOLEEE SHOWWW! I like her buttt….. Sorry she is NOT ICONIC OR LEGENDARY.

    Beyonce however IS. HA
    DEAL WITH IT.

  237. AdeleSlayedYourFav December 5, 2011

    Iconic?
LMAO- ADELE IS THE REAL ICON HERE.
Beyonce is just a flop copy cat who tried to copy 21 with 4 but it didnt work lMAO.

I DARE anyone from the Hive to come for my fave, cos what can you say about her- shes perfect!

  238. N**** Please December 5, 2011

@ REENA & KAT DELUNA (sick of your nonsense btw ) & other haters ,

Nigggaa Pleassee BEYONCE !! IS and FOREVER WILL BE A ICON & LEGEND , i mean , she has had a major influence in the music industry and is a TITAN, MUSIC TITAN in todays industry, has had 4 #1 SOLO albums , unlike Rihanna who has not even got one #1 album , despite that she has more chances , 6 times , more than BEYONCE but nope, it aint working. And yes Whitney Houston will forever be a ICON but the world has changed. music has changed and new ICONS are born like BEEEYYOONNNCCEEE !! so HATERS keep on hating , keep drawing attention about her . the more, the more popular she becomes 😀 hahaha xo n**** please !!

  239. Mil jackson December 5, 2011

    Drrrrrr… lol NEXT QUESTION!!

  240. N**** Please December 5, 2011

  241. THE REAL TYLER* December 5, 2011

    @Bee Sting

    ^^^^ She said it best

  242. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    @adeleslayedyourfav/

I agree with one thing. i am also a fan of ADELE. HER LIVE DVD AT BALLROOM. I MEAN OH MY GOD. AMAZING.her voice is SOOO BEAUTIFULL.

I dont think B copied 21 goes it doesnt come close. I am a beyonce fan/stan but i can see that 4 wasnt a commercial succes. (allthough I love the cd) Just matter of taste.

I respect people who have REAL TALENT. I think talent can be LEGENDARY OR ICONIC. Thats why Beyonce is on her way to become iconic or legendary. The same for adele !!

  243. classy_guy December 5, 2011

If Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Celine Dion, or Mariah Carey brought beyonce out on stage at an event, do you think they would say ” PLEASE WELCOME THE LEGENDARY BEYONCE KNOWLES”? HELL NAW SO THERE’S YOUR ANSWER!

  244. Bey’knight December 5, 2011

    @Zania

Adele’s sales really? Thats 1 weak arguement. Bey is 15 yrs deep n u comparing her to d new best selling artist how convenient. So wat if we are havin dis convo in 2 yrs time n Ciara is slayin then u’l lbring up her name? It doesnt work dat way dear. Bey’s achievements are somn Adele can only dream of. Why u even bringin up. This is a post about Beyonce bein an icon. U tellin me Adele is now an icon. U cant say her songs arent memorable jus cus u dont like em dats u luv, her somgs made many best-of-the-decade lists infact vh1 named CIL greatest of d decade, whether u agree or not is just an opinion. Her 1st album was inducted. Irreplaceable was one d most played songs on radio last decade n Bey was radio airplay queen of d decade. She had more certifications than any other artist and who say she is equal to MJ? noone but spanning from d time she hit the scene till date she’s an icon. Those celebs are not tryin to convince u of anything they are telling it like it is. She’s respected n highly placed in d industry for a reason. There were icons b4 MJ n there will be after him too. Music does not bow at his grave.

    @Group top flight

U sound lke u speak for d public eh. R u on twitter? Search for a night with Beyonce, go i dare ya if u wan kno wat the public think of Beyonce. All the celebs that drclare admiration for her, call her best performer alive, billboard dat gave millenium award, World Music award gave international artist award, NRJ named international artist of the decade, askmen.com users voted her most desirable woman of the decade n the list goes on. Gaga calls her queenbey. Adele’s 1st tweet was today n it was a pic of her next to a Beyonce photo. Are they all stans too. Bey’s accomplishments ars fan beyond wat a sect of stans can hand her

Soiled her legacy? Dont even go there. Tell me one person who has a perfect imagr or who hasnt been accused of lying n stealin n way way worse scandals/ rumours that Beyonce has been associated with. Lol its so funny u’d bring that up, u talking soiled legacy, where would dat leave MJ, Madonna, Rkelly, Whitney houston n prstty much every legend in d game? Another very weak arguement

  245. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

Everybody has a own defination of ICON or LEGENDARY i think..

  246. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

I thought it over, but I think Beyonce is allready an ICON.
Adele and GAGA are AMAZING, and they have accomplished SO much in a short timee.. They are coming VERY close..

  247. iSimplyDGAF December 5, 2011

Beyonce isnt at a status to say that she is an icon. you have to put more work into the game. Not that im throwing shade because Bey is Bey and shes an awesome artist..but lets be real here.

her stans are going to stand for her regardless of whether shes good or bad..

but she still has alot more growing to do. She displays that with this album out now. You get comfortable and the world will show you that you need to stay on your toes.

No need to bring up any other artists because thats not who this post is abt.

    I got confidence in her.
Let her live her life, and enjoy the fruits of her labor.

whens shes ready she’ll come out swinging. She always does.

  248. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    @isimplydgaf..

i agree with you on some points… ( I think she is allready an Icon) but what your saying i think its true. She still can grow 🙂 And I have confidence in that

  249. YOOSONDALOOSE December 5, 2011

Love Bey, she is more than an icon.
    #TeamBey

  250. Keith December 5, 2011

WOW!!! What a way to start Monday…I agree with posters who stated that Beyonce is on her way and also those who stated that she is the best of a bad generation. In addition to time and output, she loses points because she really has done nothing artistically or politically groundbreaking. What moves you toward ICON status is not simply hit records and sales accomplishments. Britney only gets mentions because white gays work to keep her worship quotient high but she’s pretty much toast at this point…

In the end tally, Bey will get there because she is the best of what the youngun’s got….

The last of the old-school ICONS is Janet, whose ascendance followed both Whitney and Madonna. She is the last deserving of the terms ICON and LEGENDARY….

  251. Bey’knight December 5, 2011

    @Classy_guy

Smh i thought we were buddies now oh well *shrugs. As for ur comment

    1. There’s. a diff between legend and icon. Beyonce is not a legend …. Yet!
    2. Did u watch the 2011 AMAs? Bey was the youngest artist honoured as one of the AMA divas in a special segment along with all the legends Mariah, Whitney, Tina Turner etc. She’s officially one of the AMA Divas
    3. Did u hear Cher’s speech when she introduced Bey n Tina Turner at d grammys? U shd go watch it
    4. How many people can say they’ve had Lady Gaga n Britney Spears jointly introduce their performance on award show.

The last person Britney introduced was MJ in 06 n Beyonce in 2011

    Anybody else wanna try it?

  252. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    @bey knight

    YEAH !!! :d

Beyonce will become a legend. Shes yet an ICON.
Legends are MJ, Mariah etc. I think Beyonce is one of the artists (at this time) who is the closest to become a legend.

  253. YOOSONDALOOSE December 5, 2011

People are so funny how they are dissing her at age 30 where as their artists haven’t even touched what she has done?

    *C-Squad*!

Beyonce is THE MOST ICONIC female artist if not artist of our generation

  259. SaDare December 5, 2011

Yes and she is in fact a Legend. More than just an Icon. Beyonce’s music and contributions to the music industry is undeniable. She has set in the 21st century a higher level for a live performer. Her impact is just as great as those legends before. She has influenced a slew of artist in todays time. Not to mention her songs are some of the most creative to be made. Had she been out when MC, Whitney, MJ, Janet she’d STILL be on their level. Her being in generation with sub par artist has NOTHING to do with anything. That’s so damn weak to say. Her talent is and forever will be a force.

  260. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

    @bey knight
Haha indeed. They bringing up names of legends. We are just talking about Beyonce being Iconic.
Have you seen one night with beyonce? I loveee her soooo much.. Her album is back on itunes TOP 10 in UK 🙂 (ALSO in portugal)

  261. Jluv27 December 5, 2011

I’m not a true Beyonce fan, I don’t buy any of her albums at all. But one thing i can honestly say with being very objective is that Beyonce is definately an iconic figure in today’s pop culture. I don’t know how many records she’s sold or how many awards she has, but the fact is she has made her imprint on music and inspired a new generation, which is what an icon does. I grew up with the likes of Madonna and Janet and I do believe Beyonce should and will fall within that caregory whether it’s now, or in the near future. No one can deny her presence in music.

  262. SNDR BEY December 5, 2011

  266. MusiqKinq December 5, 2011

I’m positive more people know who he was and what he did, than know who Beyonce is and what she does.

  267. CALL ME HATERRRRRRRRRRRRRR December 5, 2011

WHAT KIND OF DAMN QUESTION IS THAT????? TGJ REALLLYYY!!!!!

    THATS NOT EVEN A QUESTION

SHE WAS NAMED “THE BEST “ARTIST IN THE LAST 25 YEARS

SHES BEYOND ICONIC SHES A LIVING “LEGEND”

  268. CONNIE December 5, 2011

Just because you win a lot of awards does not make you an icon. To be an icon, one has to make their mark to remember. One has to make something that is memorable. To me that still remains to be seen when it comes to Beyonce, I feel like she has not made that mark just yet. To tell you the truth, Britney Spears is more of an icon than Beyonce because of her most memorable moments coming from highs and lows. Plus even with her medicre performances, Britney still has a loyal fanbase and still selling out arenas.

  269. AuntieJackie December 5, 2011

I was born in ’88. My world does exist without her. I know about icons. But, yeah, she is the closest thing we have to one (of this generation) because of what she’s accomplished and her IN-SANE work ethic. And, no, doing a bunch of concerts non-stop and releasing a whole bunch of albums every six months isn’t good work ethic.

She performs her ass off, sings her ass off. She’s a super-star. Successful tours, albums, films, clothing, perfumes, festivals. She’s done it all and had a 15+ year career. Closest thing to an icon we have.

  270. real December 5, 2011

I know i was gettin updated on twitter i dint realise that the show would have dat much effect. Its great! It even climbed a few spots in US too jus cus of ths trends lol She really outdid outself w/ dat one. I think its even better than Live at roseland tbh. I wish it was on dvd n they dint even show all her performances ugh

Btw i just read an article online about a rock band who said they are inspired by Bey’s album, 4 for their 2012 album. Yess!!!

  273. Small_Angel December 5, 2011

    Yes She is!
Beyonce, Britney and Christina are the 3 Icons of our Generation…

  274. Iantuition December 5, 2011

Of course she is, despite this messy-ass, unnecessary-ass question. Look at all she’s done. She has the biggest impact of any artist this millennium, male OR female. Her music defined the past decade, and her artistry and its legacy has impressed past generations, and will shape this generation of artists and those after. She lives and breathes legendary. And the best damn thing about it is that it’s not even OVER. She was here, and still is.

Furthermore, what make that more evident is the hilariously ridiculous logic and boldfaced coming from the people who say she isn’t:
Chris Brown an icon because for folk on 106.
    4 copying 21.
“End of Time” being a “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” ripoff. (let us pause to LAUGH, please… ROFL)
Rihanna having an “IT” factor period, let alone moreso than Beyoncé.
Beyoncé’s music not having themes outside of love.
Not being able to relate to Beyoncé because she isn’t Claireece Precious Jones.
    KI!
    “Single Ladies” not being written

  275. IHOMOWOMAN December 5, 2011

at the end of the day u all know beyonce is iconic !!!!!!!!!!!!!! with only 4 LP she managed to put her print in the music history not throught #1 hit but becauz she just change the game at some point ans mark the pop culture from 1996-2000 period with DC and 2001-today with her solo trip she may not has acheive feat that other artist have acheived but sure she left her mark and the best thing is that is just the beggining as she getting more mature i m sure she will give to her craft new side and she will dominate pop culture for the next decade LOV U KING B

    2) The ONLY Icons to come out of this Generation are BEYONCE & BRITNEY (& MAYBE Usher, Maybe) but Thats It! The REST are Rising Icons at best!

  286. Tr December 5, 2011

WE DON’T EVEN HAVE TO DISSECT HER LACK OF SOUL, MUSICAL ACUMEN, SUBSTANCE ARTISTIC, AND CREATIVE CREDIBILITY(LACK THEROF). ALL THAT IS NECESSARY IS TO LOOK AT THE STATE OF HER CAREER NOW:

HER IMAGE IS FADING, FAN-BASE, —NOT STAN-BASE— IS DWINDLING, AND HER APPEAL ISN’T WHAT IS WAS 4 YEARS AGO. 4 IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS DETERIORATION. FROM THE BAD MATERIAL, TO THE FLOP SINGLES, TO THE MISMANAGEMENT, AND POOR EXECUTION…THIS WHOLE PROJECT HAS BEEN A TOTAL, AND UTTER CATASTROPHY, WHICH SIMPLY PROVES THE POINT THAT MATTHEW KNOWLES WAS THE MAKER OF HER CAREER. HE WAS THE EYES, THE EARS, THE SAVY, THE BUSINESS ACUMEN, THE EVERYTHING,AND WITHOUT HIM…WELL U HAVE 4….

BTW *UPDATE HER DVD SOLD A POULTRY 17K 1ST WEEK…LEGEND???

  287. BC December 5, 2011

    Bey always have her haters.
amazing show. i wish i could have been there. anyway
i sure when she gets back to performing she will make new concepts. u cant deny her though. i see peeps on here who r not even Bey fans and praising her. THATS AMAZING! i guess u see why the Beyhive goes so hard for her. We dont call her the Queen for nothing.
ps: rihanna stans should not even be on here trying 2 hate when riahanna has never given a performance before in her life ro come close 2 anything Bey has done. (guess that why they hate) and as far as a flop just go check TTT sales and come back and tell how thats going.

  288. BC December 5, 2011

@TR the DVD was only sold in Walmart and lot of Walmart didnt even have it. wait 4 the deluxe addition sales to come and we will talk about that.
Did u know 4 is Beyonce most critically acclaimed album? So just bc u dont like the music does not mean its not good. different strokes 4 different folks.
btw 4 achieved a higher rating than most album ive seen. #NICETRYBUTUSTILLFAIL dont be hateing

But Overall I think I stan for Beys MUSIC more so than ANYTHING else!, even more than her epic live Performances & probably even more than her Voice though Her voice is her Music I love ALL 3!!

Thats Why Im willing to SNAP NECKS for B****** on here coming for any of these 3 Things, I Could honestly CARE LESS though what They say about anything else concerning her… Fake Pregnancy, She steals, no soul blah blah blah 😕

But the WORSE they could say is about her MUSIC which in my opinion it just doesnt get any better than 4 or DIL. 😕

    My Opinion…

Uh, Michael was NOT intimidated by Beyonce. Michael wanted to HIT DAT lol. Come on now! Michael looked at her ass a many times. I remember seeing Diddy saying that Michael was like “yo, wassup with her is she single.”

Make no mistake Michael Jackson’s legendary ICONIC status will never be threatened by ANYONE. Beyonce, GaGa, Britney and the rest knows this.

  291. Eric December 5, 2011

SHE IS AN ICON. HER MATERIAL HAS NOT BECOME CLASSIC YET, BUT HER PERSONA AND ARTISTRY HAS.

  292. Kyle December 5, 2011

I believe she is iconic in every sense of the word. Love her or hate her, there is no denying the imprint that she has left on the music industry since she debuted almost 15 years ago. Music would not be the same to me if Beyonce did not exist. I remember going into 6th grade when “Bills, Bills, Bills” came out and since then, she has been an unstoppable force. I’ve literally watched her grow up in front of my eyes and I think its been fasinating to see the artist she has become. People might say they don’t think she’s an icon but she’ll be talked about just like the way Tina Turner, Cher and all of them are talked about today. With that said, yes, she’ll be a LEGEND once she is gone. The nice thing for us though is knowing she still isn’t finished yet. She has so much more to give the music world which is exciting.

  293. ChristinasCOMING December 5, 2011

In terms of music no she’s not! How many lawsuits has she been hit with when it comes to stealing and plaguirizing?

When it comes to her image, I’d say she’s definitely on her way but not quite there yet.

Beyonce is the type of person who loves attention and can’t stand somebody else stealing the spotlight from her.

  294. Music December 5, 2011

This is a dumb post, yes she is. People will not give her that title because they don’t want to, not that she doesn’t deserve it. In a time where someone can use autotune and make a number one hit…but someone who doesn’t but actually use their real voice and real instruments can’t how can you SERIOUSLY discredit somebodies iconic musicality based off of that? This girl can actually sing scales and not just the major ones and at the end of the day she got in this business because she likes to sing she deserves the title as “iconic singer”. She has a stage presence that can’t be denied. She has done many iconic things that the average person prob wont know bc she doesn’t publicize such as charity. When she steps on stage she performs her heart out and takes the art of performing very seriously. She ACTUALLY PERFORMS and many artist look up to her and borrow her stuff whether they admit it or not. She has obtained great success not only as an artist but an African American Female and she does deserve to be up there with the Arethra Franklins and Whitney Houstons.

  295. WhitneyHoustonLovesBeyonce December 5, 2011

Yes she is iconiC. She is the largest woman in entertainmenT amongst her generatioN just as I were. RespecT KinG B because she bares no hurT on any haterS

  297. THE GREAT LACEFRONCE. December 5, 2011

ICON???? LMAOO. BLEACHonce?? Her entire career has been based off of STEALING other peoples ideas & claiming them as her own. BLEACHonce has YET to make any groundbreaking music, videos ..ANYTHING original..her idea

Name me something that BLEACHonce has done in her career that was ORIGINAL

THE GREAT LACEFRONCE will wait ,:D

    There’s your answer!!!

You can’t !!! Her work is all the creations of others..PLUS her music is PURE SHITE.

I see we are going to beat this s*** to death..

there is a huge difference between a legend and an icon…huge difference

icons and legends are NOT on the same level..

it kills me when people are using icon and legend in the same context…

michael jackson is a legend, madonna is a legend, britney, mariah, whitney..all made in impact..

  300. Crystal December 5, 2011

hell to the no. she is a product and a performer but musician and visionary, she is not!

  301. BC December 5, 2011

i think this is more of a rhetorical post bc its like of coarse shes iconic. Thats like asking is they sky blue.

  302. BC December 5, 2011

Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Prince = legends
not bc they sold millions of records but bc they are real musicians and r not just known for their cute songs on the radio or stellar performances.
    In my opinion

2,madonna (queen of pop)..nothing more to say

3.britney..princess of pop(close to madonna)…shes responsible for all these pop tarts out there, she paved the way for them, like madonna paved the way for her..ask beyonce who stay swagger jacking her moves

4.mariah…was the first chick who mixed r&b and hip hop..and made it popular till this day

  306. jamir21: I SPEAK THE TRUTH !!!! December 5, 2011

Michael Jackson is a LEGEND and an ICON.

With a bit more work, Beyonce will get there. She’s a legend and an icon to her stans. She’s beloved. Is she recognized outside her fan base as a legend and/or an icon? That is very debatable.

  308. RatedXXX(you mad because????) December 5, 2011

like i said earlier beyonce is an icon..but no where near legend status…

im not trying to take beyonce accomplishments away from her..yes she has grammys, yes she has all these people kissing her ass

but umm she wins by default….

back then, people had competition..records companies didnt shove down certain artist down our throat..and put everybody else on the back burner

when britney came out, she was competing with jessica simpson, mandy more, xtina, and so many others..

  309. Christian December 5, 2011

Mariah desiring a duet with Beyonce’ lol cut the foolishness. Beyonce is an excellent performer. But she hasn’t done anything groundbreaking, or anything that really sets her apart. Sure she’s been consistent. But she’s missing a few things. If were generally speaking about music not really, if were speaking in terms of all that she has done as an entertainer then perhaps.

  350. Damion December 6, 2011

You delusional Britney stans! Stop living in the past. Brit is NOT iconic, she made bubblegum pop! GTFO she did nothing groundbreaking, she can’t sing or perform live, what kind of artist is that. MOST OF HER PEERS HAVE ALREADY PEAKED AND OVER. STANS OF THE LESSER ARTISTS ARE SIMPLY UPSET AND PRESSED BY THIS. BEYONCE IS 1 ARTIST OUT OF HER PEERS, THAT MOST OF THE MUSIC LEGENDS LOVE AND APPRECIATE. 364. xedos December 6, 2011

The artist you name Janet & Madonna all have weakness the cannot sing.
Beyonce have no weakness when you see her on stage. Janet or Madonna have no
natural s** appeal on stage. the have to try hard to create it. Beyonce can just make an entrance on stage strike a pose and you get your money’s worth. if janet did not have the Jackson name i don’t think she would be a huge artist. during her time she did not have any competition, because she was like the only black female or maybe Whitney who were on MTV. this give her a bigger audience along with the Jackson name the only reason why she was on MTV was because she was Micheal sister.
Jody Watley was a better singer, dancer, better looking and have natural s** appeal more than Janet ,but she could not get on MTV. beyonce on the other hand have to compete for her space

  365. Davon December 6, 2011

@Xedos=You are like what 12? The Jackson name means nothing. Letoya and Rebbie are Jacksons and their music careers flopped. Janet may not be a strong vocalist. But Her dancing is out this world. She does moves that Beyonce can only dream about. Beyonce jacks Janet’s s*** all the time. Without Janet there would be no Beyonce,Jody Watley a better dancer than Janet? Lmfao girl bye. That’s a joke. The only people who can see Janet on the dance floor is Michael and Paula. As for Madonna her music was innovative, original, and creative. Something Beyonce’s isn’t.
Beyonce snatches people’s styles 24/7/ There’s nothing iconic about here yet. Madonna and Janet both took the the world by storm by the time they were 25. Janet and Michael MADE the Jackson name. She didn’t have any competition? Madonna was her competition, Paula was her competition,Apollonia, and others. It shouldn’t matter if Beyonce has competition again. If she’s so iconic then she should be able to stomp out the competition. Madonna does,Janet does. She needs to get it together. And stop saying that she got where she is because of Michael because that’s a lie. Beyonce got where she is because her of her daddy and Jay-Z. Janet has a lot of s** appeal. She was named of the sexiest women a live. Take away Beyonce’s make-up,weave,wonder-bra,and b*** pads. She’s a plain Jane. She’s pretty nothing but

Everyone has their opinion as evident to see. But i will say Yes she’s a ICON. Why anyone doesnt think she isnt is just plain their opinion. Also everyone keeps saying she steal songs and dance moves. I think when Beyonce says she wrote her songs, i dont think she means literally, she says that because she’s the one singing the songs. To many people surprise, she does do alot for her own career behind the scenes, she knows her craft, she may not be the best speaker. But Beyonce seems very smart when it comes to her work. I think Beyonce is a easy target for haters because she’s beautiful and talented and quiet and mostly to herself offstage..She’s not the one who craves attention by twittering, facbook or whateva, the stuff other celebs do. And that pisses people off, that they cannot get into Beyonce’s world on a personal side…So they just bash her like they have been doin for the past 14 years..But you cannot deny the force that is Beyonce. I dont give a damn what no one says. Anyone can see that

if amy winehouse wasnt using drugs and drinking beer it would’ve been AMY WINEHOUSE ———————> ADELE

  375. Davon December 6, 2011

@SNDR BEY-No you do. Beyonce has nothing going for her besides the fact that she’s light skin and pretty and has a decent voice
@SUPERSASHAFIERCE-Everyone cared about her death over here. Me including. She was an icon before she died. Her voice has been compared to to the likes of greatness like Janis Joplin. Her voice was so soulful. Adele is great too. Adele is out of this world. I love them both.

  376. Davon December 6, 2011

@Aimes-Thank You. All she know how to do is swaggajack. She’s a chameleon.

  377. Davon December 6, 2011

Beyonce is lame. Yeah she can sing, but she isn’t an icon. What has she done that was iconic? Nothing. There’s nothing about her that says WOW look at that omg I can’t believe she did that,so original. Nobody has ever said that about her. Nobody ever said her voice is amazing. She’s a mediocre performer. I like her personality and all. But musically she’s plain, repetitive, and a copy cat.

  378. Taimesz5 December 6, 2011

She is more iconic than that crackhead Whitney Houston

    THE NERVE!
Beyonce an icon? Then OJ Simpson must be innocent.

JANET is the definiton of an icon.
    She’s actually origininal.
She has countless iconic videos that have impacted Pop for the better, Beyonce only has 2- Crazy In Love and Single Ladies.

Plus. Janet doesn’t steal. She actually creates her music.

  385. dOneGun December 6, 2011

Yes! I think she is Iconic.

  386. TakeABow December 6, 2011

A Janet fan talking about being an icon- now ive heard it all.
Janets most ‘iconic’ moment to date is when she allowed the whole world to see her sagging tehtahs at the Superbowl.

Beyonce is an icon. I call her Baby Madonna. Better than lady caca

  387. Beyonce is slightly strange December 6, 2011

I used to like Beyonce (only during her first solor album era)….. then I realized the repeated fraudulent activities she was doing……..

Beyonce, to me, is an iconic thief that gets away with her crimes.

Also, many people think her pregnancy is fake. I hope Beyonce does something about these rumors. Preferably, during her last 9th month of pregnancy, to make everyone shut up.

  392. Chris December 6, 2011

No, she’s topical. When she has a new album out everyoen goes crazy! Once it dies off who atcually plays any of her back catalogue? I never hear irreplaceable or even If I were a Boy on the radio anymore yet true icons have their stuff played all the time. It also goes without saying that her albums always seem to make people go…”meh it’s alright” it’s not like she has albums that are truly amazing, just albums with a few amazing songs on. I’m not saying she’s not good because she is and she’s an incredible performer with a brilliant voice. but icon? No, she’ll fade with time.

I think those who are saying yes are being blinded by her stats & those saying NO are being blinded by their hate. Even those who are comparing he to past acts.

An ICON is someone who has had extreme influence on a generation of listeners & singers behind them. Michael has definitley had that (see Chris Brown, Ciara, Usher, Beyonce etc.), Janet & Madonna both have that influence.

And so does Beyonce, all the acts who came after her, including RIHANNA cite her as a major influence (Rihanna who is well on her way as well to becoming an ICON debateable as that will be in the future)…

I udnerstand we all have our opinions but really some of you are taking this to extreme lengths. You don’t have to like her or kiss her ass just admit what’s already obvious. Even older ICONS & LEGENDS have said that Beyonce is an ICON. NO denying it… Be real with youreselves

  402. Tellmewhatyournameis December 6, 2011

  403. Tellmewhatyournameis December 6, 2011

And as a solo artist she has NOT sold 100 million anything! Now Mariah has…to be an icon I think she has a bit more ways to go…she is not on the level of Michael, Janet, Madonna, Cher, Patti, those are icons who have acheieved greatness…I will not knocked Beyonce, she has done a lot and acheieved a lot, just not enough to be considered an icon

  404. SNDR BEY December 6, 2011

    well,
Independent woman was also #1 for 11 weeks (or 12) in a row.. So they had 4 number 1 singles.
DC also had 2 albums at number 1.. Survivor & #1’s.

    Facts or facts babe

Beyonce sold allready (with 3 albums and the singles) 75+ miljon..
With DC she sold 50+ milion.. So that makes 125+ milj.

    Again check your facts.

  405. TheOneAndOnly December 6, 2011

    yes

  406. K December 6, 2011

Hell Yes!!! that woman is amazing. Not only are her songs good, but she is an incredible singer and performer she’s the only person who actually sounds better live than she does on the album(studio voice). All her accomplishments speak for themselves 16 grammies, tons of other awards (ama, mtv video, billboard, etc.) Every album has gone #1. Clothing line, 2 perfume lines, etc. That woman is beyond incredible and definately iconic.

  408. Nicholas December 6, 2011

Without a doubt, Beyoncé is an icon. She has been in the business for half her life. Now people comparing her to Michael Jackson must have had Reconstructive surgery on their eyes because last time i checked…she has boobs… and a vajayjay. And she said her biggest inspiration was TINA TURNER. Go on youtube and look at old videos of Tina Turner in her prime, That is like turning a freaking mirror on Beyonce. Now anybody who opposes, thats your opinion but i say Beyonce has left (and will continue to leave) her mark om the world. From No, No, No with DC to Crazy In Love with Jay-Z to I Was Here. From Destiny’s Child (Album) to Dangerously In Love to 4, Beyonce is Beyonce and she is an Icon

  409. BitchIcantevenspellwelfare December 6, 2011

    Beyoncé….iconic….hmmm.

I think whenever we explore the “icon” status of any entertainer, we have to take into consideration that that the word “icon” rests in the word “iconoclast.” If we strip away all the religious sentiments associated with this term, we will still be left with the synonym “maverick.” Is Beyoncé a maverick? This is something ALL fans of her will have to answer in terms of her obtaining an Iconic status.

janet Jackson = Icon. Madonna = Icon. Meaning, there are no female artists before them like them, however, they continue to produce artistic progeny AFTER them. Janet and Madonna are mavericks.

For me, an Icon cannot be determined in the present present. Beyoncé has 15 years under her belt in the entertainment industry, but I need to see what progeny will she produce? What songs from her catalogue will truly live? Where will she be in her late 40’s and early 50’s like Janet and Madonna?

In other words, it’s too soon to tell if Beyoncé is an Icon. But, we’ll see…

    *bumps ‘ i Care’ *

    They’re actually origininal.

“The term ICON is used too loosely this day and age”
I agree. And I don’t think today’s performers can b compared to those of 20 yrs ago. Back then, it was really performing.

  413. palmgod December 7, 2011

BEYONCE IS VERY MUCH ICONIC…. I MEAN, IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY TODAY AND EVEN FOR YEARS TO COME, THIS LADY HAS SET A STANDARD. BEEN COMPARED AND PLACED WITH THE GREATS AND ALL DOZ GRAMMIES SAYS ONE THING I.C.O.N.I.C. D QUESTION HERE IS…. IS BEYONCE A LEGEND? NOT YET, BUT DEFINETLY

  414. palmgod December 7, 2011

BSIDES… AGE HAS NO REPRESENTATION OR ANYTHING TO DO WITH ICON. AN ICON IS SOM1 OR SOMTHING THAT WEN CALLED BRINGS TO MIND A REPRESENTATION OF SOMTIN> AND WEN U HEAR D NAME BEYONCE…. U AUTOMATICALLY THINK, , AMZING VOICE, GREAT PERFORMER, CATCHY SONGS UBER S***,. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY MUSIC… SO YES, SHE IS ICONIC AND 10YRS FROM NOW WE WLD HAVE NEW ARTISTES WHO WLD NO DOUBT TAKE A LEAAF FROM HER BOOK AND EVEN PHRASES LIKE “A YOUNG BEYONCE” OR A “BEYONCE ” PRESENCE
O SOMTIN LIKE REMINSESENSE OF THE GREAT BEYONCE. SO YEAH SHE IS

  415. palmgod December 7, 2011

AND A GAIN IN A GENERATION WHERE SONGS EASILY LEAK ONTO D INTERNET AND WHOLE ALBUMS ARE BEING DOWNLOADED WAY BEFORE AN ARTISTE HAS EVEN NAMED D ALBUM. AGE OF STREAMING AND EASY ACCESS TO THIS SONGS 4 FREE. WE MUST COMMEND EFFORTS TO BE ABLE TO SELL ALBUMS. JANET AND MADONNA WHERE IN AN GAE WHERE THE INTERNET WAS STILL NT USED AS A MEDIUM. IT WAS EASIER TO BE ICONIC DEN DAN IT IS NOW AND EVEN FEWER COMPETITIONS. WE SHOULDNT COMPARE. THEY ARE ICONIC NO DOUBT BUT IF THEY WERE STILL AS GOOD, WE SHLDNT BE SEEING DECLINNING SALES IN ALBUMS. TELL ME, IF THE INTERNET WAS AVAILABLE IN THAT ERA, WLD DEY SELL AS MUCH? AND EVEN THIS ICONS STILL SUFFER . WE MUST APPRECIATE ARTISTE IN THIIS ERA AND THE ABILITY TO STILL SELL IN AN AGE WHERE MUSIC IS FREELY GOT. WEN EVERY BLUTOOTH TRANSFER OR DOWNLOAD, MAKES A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE SALES OF AN ALBUM. AND IF THIS ARTISTE WHERE IN DAT ERA U MUST AGREE WITH ME THAT THEY WOULD HAV SOLD JUST AS MUCH OR EVEN DOUBLE WHAT D GREATS OF THEN WOULD HAVE….. ENOF SAID

She is the 3rd most honored woman in Grammy history with a total of 16 awards, and with 44 total nominations she is now the second most nominated female artist in Grammy history, behind Dolly Parton, with 45 nominations.

  418. BeBeJuJu December 7, 2011

wow @ALVARO thanks for that tit-bit i didn’t know that! 🙂 and if FACTS like that don’t convince people then i don’t know what will! yes she’s a superstar Icon. However she’s not yet a legend like most of her stans are saying, but she’s definitely gonna be the first from this our generation to step into that category, but not in another 10-15 years when she’s in her 40’s and perhaps after 6 more albums! and knowing Beyonce, she’ll still be killing it on stage then in her high heels!

  419. JOSH December 7, 2011

i cant even take half these rihanna fans.
    Waste of time.

Yes Beyonce is great, time can only tell if shes iconic. in my opnion, yes she is.
But im a SUPERFAN, so i guess my opinion dont count. haha

  420. aROB December 7, 2011

Beyonce is iconic, and will be remembered. But lets face it, music is not what is use to be. Stuff put out today will not be remembered in the future, because they make watered down material. the 90’s was the last time good music was made. Nobody appreciates good music anymore which is why artist like Beyonce make music with no substance.

  421. Kris December 7, 2011

Is that even a serious question? 9/10 you can ask a child from 2-a senior citizen around age 75-80 and they know who BEYONCE’ is. She has made many feel able to do what she does and that is just having a good time doing what she loves to do. and whether ur able or disabled, she makes you want to dance or move to her up-beat songs even though most older people can’t keep up with her fast lyrical ability (because its not easy to stay in rythm or pitch when doing so, I’m a musician so I can say this) but they feel every bar that she is belting out, even in her more personal mellow toned songs that in one way or another, you can relate to. So pleease find a better question to ask, like does half of these artist out here even belong on the scene, not to mention even being compared to B. C’mon now.

  422. @antertain December 7, 2011

She is but her videos are not yet.
Live she sets the trend for females.

Want her to have an EPIC video thats about Run The World & Countdown

She defo a ICON in the current scene hands down but overall just a little more as she’s more than capable

  423. spraythedamn December 7, 2011

Is fat meat greasy? Hell yeah she’s iconic. No matter how much they hate on her, she is a performer and always does her thing on the stage. She’s got that IT factor that’s fasho.
