I actually agree… this is stupid and meaningless. Michael Jackson didn’t get awards for how many times his videos were watched because it doesn’t matter! The only thing that matters is 1.How well your music charts and 2. How much money you make. This is just another gimmick to make Lady Gaga and the rest of the “pop” stars to seem more successful than they really are.
actually you are wrong, views matter and michael also relied on people staying up to watch the premiere of his videos, its just that there wasnt a platform to measure how many people were watching then,but the fact is people watching your videos mattered. also how much money you make is all nice and all but that hardly ever has anything to do with music nowadays. take rita for example no music but making more money then some established acts… or beyonce who sells great but the bulk of her income is not from her music.
so yes, charting matters, your online matters, and making money shows how business smart you are not how great your music is

to a point you are right, the quality of music must matter, but quality depends on taste, which is subjective, so as long as the artist is doing the music they love and people like it then its all good.

Probably at least 1.5M+ on Musicharts since they had Lana at 1 million WW like 2 months before Mediatraffic. Very good for an alternative rock album that had literally no televised promo and no hit single. That’s more than Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, etc.
Meanwhile Beak To Beak, which has had multiple televised performances on many highly viewed shows/events, a tour, plus an H&M holiday campaign (biggest clothing retailer in the world) still hasn’t scanned 1M and is plummeting down the charts like it was expected to do after the holidays
