Everytime I try to like beyonce she reminds me that she is still that bratty selfish little girl who must win everything and “appear” better than everybody in order to feel good about herself. Beyonce stealing the shine from another deserving artist?! Oh I’m sooooo SHOCKED!!! Stealing the right to sing a song in front of a live audience when she didn’t have anything to do with the movie or acting role the song is attached to is not beneath beyonce. For she has done way worse! She has stolen the right to perform songs originally created and sung from actual great legends at inaugurations, when those legends were still alive and well *cough “Etta James” cough* This chick has no shame in her game! Now let someone else sing one of her songs live at an event and see how she takes that…. But she won’t because she wouldn’t allow it, unless they were honoring her. Beyonce tries to portray herself as so humble, like she’s some angel but deep down she is a mean girl who can’t let anyone shine over her if she can help it. @Diamond Princess. At Last was NOT originally created for NOR originally sung by Etta James. It was written by a white guy from Poland in 1941 named Mack Gordon. Etta did the same thing in 1960 that Beyonce did and is still doing; she re-recorded it and made the song accessible to her generation.
Now, the song from Selma IS NOT A LEDISI original nor did Beyonce “steal the right to sing the song in front of a live audience.” You sound very ignorant. Gospel music is supposed to be a spiritual experience. There should always be a connection when one sings gospel. Beyonce didn’t have that connection imo. She struggled to find her key too. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t good either….

i find some of bey’s performances atleast live to be more technical than emotional, especially with this song. Its the way she was trained, she cant help it, and there is nothing really wrong with it, she just rather give a vocally on point performance than risk it being imperfectly perfect.
This is true. Her performances can be too vocally perfect and lack the emotion and genuine-Ness. But this performance was outstanding. And that high vocal register she hit touched the holy ghost in me. I felt it radiating right through my fuckinggg bones. Mama did that!! Y’all just love to criticize her. Yes, this was a great one. I also liked her DIL and Listen at the 2004 and 2007 grammys. But she don’t have the voice for a church song. I mean, I’m glad they didn’t bring out J Hud loud @ss, but she would’ve done a better job because with songs like that you have to have power and emotions to grab the audience.

Her performance was a snooze fest. Beyonce is a great entertainer, but hervocals only works on HER songs. And even then it’s nothing more than growls, belts and runs. I just want an explanation as to WHY she didn’t see it fit to perform one of the songs from her OWN multiple Grammy nominated album. I’m guessing it’s because she pretty much performed the whole album in its entirety at last year’s VMAs. Bey’s vocal aptitude is really amazing (she takes her voice to some really great places). However, the voice itself is not really suited for gospel. People are saying ‘you don’t have to scream to have soul.’ Um, last time I checked, neither Mahalia or Ledisi ‘screamed’ on their renditions of Take My Hand. It’s all about having that special ability to really emotionally connect with a song which I didn’t get from Bey but she’s an amazing talent. Love her always.
