2020 Year in Review: The #FreeBritney Movement

Published: Thursday 31st Dec 2020 by Rashad

Whether penciled in history books for reasons good, bad, ugly, and/or everything in between, 2020 brought with it some of entertainment’s most memorable moments.

Now, as the year draws to a close, That Grape Juice is reflecting on our favorite moments that rocked – and to some degree maybe even reshaped – the Urban and Pop cultural landscape as we know it.

Next, we’ll reflect on the movement that put the term ‘conservatorship’ in public consciousness:  the #FreeBritney campaign circulating around Pop princess Britney Spears.

Due to a series of highly publicized battles with mental health, Britney Spears was involuntarily placed in a conservatorship in 2008 with her father, Jamie Spears, named guardian over her assets.

Since 2019, the Pop icon has been involved in a legal dispute over the conditions of the conservatorship and – via a movement mobilized by her fans – has been in the center of the #FreeBritney campaign.

Look below to see 2020 highlights from the ‘Circus’ singer’s media circus related to the issue:

Although the conservatorship is reportedly set in place until at least August 2022, a review is scheduled for February 2021.  At which time, the long sought after change could occur.

Otherwise, report has it Britney will not perform again as long as her father is in charge of her career and assets.

Oh my girl… i’m so sad for her 😪
Remember that unreleased song “Rebellion”, who knew the lyrics of this one would find such an echo today?

    “Be wary of others
    The ones closest to you
    The poison they feed you
And the voodoo that they do”

    Now it all makes sense.
