Two of the year’s most highly anticipated R&B offerings found themselves available on record shelves on the same day.
Indeed, October 7th brought with it the latest releases of R&B fan favorite Keyshia Cole and high octane newcomer Tinashe. Between them, they left few promotional stones unturned as they popped up everywhere from ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ & ‘The Queen Latifah Show’ to ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live‘ and ‘106 & Park.’
But, was it enough?
With Cole reporting the lowest first week numbers of her career and Tinashe’s modest numbers slightly behind that, did each songstress’s additional releases (i.e. songs and/or videos) and promotional appearances act as just the tricks to hoist reported numbers upward?
Find out below:
Tinashe ‘Aquarius’
Official First Week Sales: 18,000 (up 1k from predictions)
Chart #: 16
Keyshia Cole’s ‘Point of No Return’
First Week Sales: 25,500 (revised up 3k)
Chart #: 9
Via Billboard:
Keyshia Cole is the final debut in the top 10, as her sixth studio effort, Point of No Return, bows at No. 9 with 25,000. All six of her albums have hit the top 10, andPoint of No Return follows 2012’s Woman to Woman, which debuted and peaked at No. 10 (96,000 opening week).
I’ll just copy and paste this from the Jessie J sales post.

Damn, even I forgot how bad the music game is right now in terms of sales. Lol I literally predicted Tinashe to sell like 60K last month but then remember the shift in terms of sales nowadays.
–
But fact of the matter, when I saw Tee’ sales I was shocked but no butthurt about it because this is only the beginning and also a debuting artists album sales don’t predict their future I mean look at many of those artists that came before when R&B was “mainstream” and got not good but GREAT first week sales (100K or more) and now look what their selling now. Anyways it’s the beginning and I am so thrilled that she finally has an album out and she isn’t worried about sales, she is worried about review reception among critics and fans! 😀
You are a really dedicated fan of hers. Do you know her personally?
What makes you think that? And no I don’t know her personally, geeezz I wish I did 🙂
she needs to release all hands on deck
Aquarius is a solid album start to finish
Jesus. Those numbers are horrible. RIP to the music industry.
–
Tinashe’s album is still a solid piece of work tho.
tinashe deserves better she has a really good solid album
Well Tinashe is on RCA and they do not promote their artists until the week before and during the album’s release and Keyshia promotes on the same places every year. But it’s sad because they both could’ve sold a lot more. Both around 60k easy
Awwww :'( poor Tinashe. But she’ll grow and make more money and good music though. Keyshia you DONEEE!!!
In the spirit of keeping it 100 real all the time let’s be honest. This a major flop for them both. Don’t tell me how Aquarius is new blah blah blah this chick was EVERYWHERE promoting this album. EVERYWHERE. Constant updates on here. There really Is nothing to say here except people simply are not interested right now. Keyshia I’ll always fondly remember when I got life off you (1st and 2nd album) but rip as well. People still buy music (myself included) I only buy who I connect with tho.
I agree with you, both Keyshia’s and Tinashe’s debut sales are underwhelming and there is no other way to justify or soften that fact. This goes to show just how damaging the incorporation of social media and streaming has hurts artists. There used to be a time where labels invested money into radio and tv promotion, now everything is cost effective using social media. I wish both women the best in their music careers.
Aquarius is actually good ive been Having Cold Sweat on repeat
Thats horrible but atleast Keyshia debuted in the top 10 now for Flopnashe girl these #s are a joke
I agree Molly, if it were any other artist (new/old) TGJ would consider it a flop but because they are trying to put Tinashe on they call it “respectable”. Since when did 17,000 copies and a debut outside of the top 10 become respectable? Just call it for what it is a commercial debut flop. That does not mean it won’t sell over time if her team and RCA promote the project more. I bought the album and love it, so I sincerely wish Tinashe the best in her promising career because I think she can bring something different to R&B.
Keyshia didn’t give a damn about this album it was clear from the beginning. contract obligations.
Yet she made a video for every song giving the girls bootleg beyonce tease.
TGJ would you stop with the numbers and comparing artists…..So tired of that, just enjoy the damn music….it just become a race now.
well Hoodrat Cole It Look’s Like your done #FINALLY lol
I can vouch for Tinashe. “Aquarius” is a great album from beginning to end. There is not one song I do not like. I played it this weekend over and over during a 2 hour trip and it made my drive seem way faster. Definitely a fan of hers now. Go Tinashe!
@Molly I’m starting to realize that you alway try to start a stan war all the time. SMH lol. And it hasn’t been long enough that you were actually supporting Tinashe. Do you always flip flop like this? ….LMAO!
Who are you and why are you mentioning me?
@Tinashe, you nailed that sorry excuse for a human being. For some reason she thinks she’s legendary in blogsphere but in reality it a a troll thirsty for attention and acceptance.
Both of the albums were mediocre and boring to
Be honest. I don’t see Tinashe making it second time around.
Remember this comment!
But why was 2 On released all the way back in January??? It should’ve been released now!!! Or at least a month ago…
Im guessing RCA wanted to start the year off with pushing their new artist (Tinashe). But it never was released to radio until March and July(Worldwide).
Hmmm… I think they should’ve waited till she had a good solid album. You know labels nowadays seem to be quite lazy… They just jump at a big single then I don’t know what the hell they do after that…
Hmmm… yeah I agree. Labels have their own marketing plan for artists but I’ll address things that I didn’t like about the album soon since I am an honest critic lol.
Abysmal
Honestly what messed tinashe up is her A&R team they waited to long for a second single and they really didn’t create any buzz around her and she hasn’t promoted that much except for 106 and park and jimmy kimmel SHE has potential she has pop appeal and some songs on Aquarius are Cross-over for the mainstream top 40
Yeah these sales are horrible. If you’re not already a big name in music, it will be hard to sell. I was shocked by Tinashe’s sales. I love 2 0n,and thought that would help push her sales. Her album is just ok though. I couldn’t connect with any of her songs on her album. Kinda depressing.
But 2 on was the most generic song. You see how quickly it burnt out? She had other potential hits. Her team dropped the ball. Honestly why I feel she is half assing all these cute gigs she keeps getting. She needs to come for bey or something and then release a video for every song. At this point i see declines every week. It’s abysmal.
Streaming, hashtags and youtube views are the way forward now… Bye bye iTunes…
KII!!!!!!!!!!!! KESHIA COLE SUCKS!!!!!! KII!!!
how is krimlin doing on the paypal charts? kiii
Exactly. His fav doesn’t even have an album. What type of legend promotes mixtapes? Lol
Yo mammy
Shut up nicki
Danm Keyshia u really fell off!
If you can sing and write, don’t sign to a label. Go inde, they pull these numbers all the time and 80 to 90% of the money goes to YOU, not just 7% (if you even get that now.)
its that Ciara curse people compared tinashe to Ciara and they jinxed her the GP caused her to flop everytime you compare a artist to Ciara they flop they called it the Ciara-Flop-Curse
Glad rih rih was immune she had been compared at one time!!! Lls #immunity
I’m really digging Tinashe album , haven’t heard KC yet. Wish them the best of luck
This just further proves it don’t mean s*** if your single is #1or receives hell of airplay, cause you’ll never see a certification of an gold or platinum or even silver album or single plagues, until time passes (5 or more years). The industry should be ashamed of this s***. How is it many of our faves and others have over 100 million views off of YouTube but only 20,000 ppl went out and bought their damn albums with all their countless promo and exposure over social media? Theses record labels think their slick force feeding the public bs and buying thoses views. Like honestly who the f*** you know watching theses videos everyday ???? And songs are easily overhyped and forgotten the next or two months.
Not true let’s be very clear Lady Gagas debut album The Fame didn’t sell that much the first week & I believe it peaked at #16 on Billboard 200 & after she kept releasing singles and videos something magical happened & her album shot to #1 & so did her singles & now it’s sold 20mil WW . That’s only the pop side tho , R&B is dead right now tbfh Tinashe is the ONLY one keeping it alive she only has 2 singles out right now in due time this album will be the talk of the world because of how fresh sounding it is , but like with Lady Gagas debut album you have to give Aquarius time to grow . The world will see her full potential soon enough !
I’m nervous for Wayne, Tha Carter V is dropping 10/28. But it’s a Carter album so it’s going to sell, regardless of lack of buzz.
It will flop like 90% of the other albums. He’ll be lucky to see half of Human numbers.
I doubt it, but you’re entitled to your wrong opinion.
Hun Tha Carter Never Flops! Trust Wayne Will Come Thru!
I think at this point, it should be more about quality rather quantity. It’s sad bc Tinashe’s album is surprisingly really good.
Can you give us an update on traci album sales?
Screaming at keyshia.
I know we scream and laugh everytime someone ask us if we know Cheryl lets talk about why she is unknown and local
Exactly this b**** stay clinging and shading international superstars when his fav made her debut before I was born and doesn’t even have 15 million worldwide sold.
Death at OffKeyshia being an “international superstar”.
Doing less than emblem 3. She tried it.
Death at this f** still clinging to me and my fave for relevance. Cheryl did more than these 2 w her last UK RELEASE. The logic of your drags are horrendous. Keyshia is as local as it gets and sells less in the us than cheryl in the UK. So again, stay the f*ck out of my mentions f**.
Also f**, if you’re 5 years old I’m screaming. That’s when my fave released her first album. Get your receipts in order before you come for me. Clinging to LB’s 2012 drags. I’m literally hollerin.
hmmmm i think Ciara will do about 1k next go around
Ciara touring next month in the UK! Your thoughts?
Tinashe’s album was boring
Wow the industry is dead. They need to find a way to insert streaming into album certifications because that’s how most people are listening to and especially discovering music now. Speaking of streaming, Spotify finally launched in my country last week, no more proxies.
Lmfao you’re such a lessor
What a shame,
Tinashe’s album is surprisingly dope and i’m buying it tomorrow.
I personally blame the record labels for this.Yes the music industry has crushed and demand for music is really low but by following the demand and supply business principle they are merely adding on the huge dump of underachieving albums and destroying the reputation of the industry as a result. My suggestion is they should have a more scientific way of releasing records and not just having a cute song on the radio, as in Tinashe’ s case. I think it was too early for her to release a record, she needed to do more singles, magazine spreads, features, endorsements etc b4 releasing a complete body of work.On the other hand I like what rihanna is doing- if an album is nt done it ain’t done.Record labels can suck on that!
The fact that Ashanti sold more than them and JLo independently. If she had had a machine, she would have sold a lot more. Shows that her name still hold weight. I’m just saying.
“With Cole reporting the lowest first week numbers of her career and Tinashe’s MODEST numbers slightly behind that,”
–
Modest…..?… Is that what were calling 18k copies sold first week for somebody who had the biggest Urban R&B hit of the 2014 Summer season…
–
But she was supposed to snatch several favez wigz…..
Chile
Mad cuz tinashe> ciara
Kreyshawn >Tink Tink aka 2 OFF aka Ms 18K
Wow its sad how only a selection of singers in the R&B game can sell nowadays.
Tinashe didn’t deserve to flop like this. Her album is the best thing to come out recently
Jhene Aiko Had The Most Solid Album Of 2014, IMO,
I thought jhene’s album was really good too, but I can’t help feeling like her ep was better in terms of its replay value
Neither of these ghetto, black, Ebola hostesses will have the iconic sounds like xtina. NExt

She should’ve bought more copies… http://instagram.com/p/t3iuAFiRXG/
Did keyshia cole promote this album? I only saw her perform remember part 2? Btw her album campaign was a mess a hot ass mess no charting single was there even a first single? As for Tinashe labels need to stop depending on 1 single to sell a album
