Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll go back to our jam ‘Love Will Never Do’ – the 7th and final single from Janet Jackson‘s magnum opus ‘Rhythm Nation.’  Reaching the summit of the Hot 100 this week in 1991, the song knocked nemesis, Madonna, from the top spot with her controversial hit ‘Justify My Love.’   This feat, we’re sure, gave Jan’s fans added satisfaction (as if they didn’t already have enough to boast).  For, ‘Love’ not only made the pop icon the only artist in history to achieve 7 top five singles from one album, it also gave her the distinct honor of being the only artist in history to have a #1 single over three different calendar years from one album.

Talk about iconic!

Get into this week’s ‘Chart Rewind’ below and see what other familiar faces you see in the top 25:

I wasn’t born in 1994, and heck, I know all my TLC songs from the CrazySexyCool album. ’95 BABY!

    • Royalkev January 14, 2016

      @Molly

You should still get familiar with some of them. Glad you at least appreciate Baby Tonight though!

  2. LB January 14, 2016

First of all, screams at Vanilla Ice.

Secondly, there was so much variety back then in terms of music genres hitting the charts, but then again the industry was much bigger.

  3. LB January 14, 2016

Oop, I didn’t know Alessia Cara is in the top 10, I really love that song.

    • ?Queen Molly? January 14, 2016

Shes been in top 10 for awhile now. Idk why Latejuice doesn’t post on her.

  4. Indie January 14, 2016

Those were the days man, when real Legends used to dominate the top 5, I’m not knocking the talent of today we have some great artist but Janet and Madonna No.1 and No.2 with 2 epic songs and videos! It doesn’t matter who is your favourite, we are so lucky to be in a time where we had both and both are historical Iconic Queens

    • Royalkev January 14, 2016

I’m not even a Madonna fan, but I can wholeheartedly say that both ladies visual contributions in music art was so necessary!

  5. Truth January 14, 2016

That a middle-of-the road, looks-like-your-uncle urban/ac group like Surface could be in the top 5 with a very grown folks R&B song like “The First Time” (which eventually topped the Hot 100) back then just reinforces how terrible things are now. You’d NEVER see this today. This generation is terrible.

  6. Stephon Jackson January 14, 2016

Love Will Never Do Without You! Justify My Love! Both are great songs. Celine & Mariah sitting @ #24/25

    • Dossome January 14, 2016

      Janet & Madonna- #1& #2
      Whitney – #18 & #19
      Celine & Mariah – #24 &#25
Those were the big 5 of that generation

      • Royalkev January 14, 2016

^ I said something similar below after checking out the chart. I fully agree with you 1000% Dos!

  7. Dossome January 14, 2016

The First Time,Sensitivity,Love Takes Time were my jams…Janet,Madonna,Whitney,Celine & Mariah on the same chart?I miss those days

  8. Lmfao_Hoe January 14, 2016

Lord Jesus the charts looked so much better then compared to todays.

  9. Danny Bey January 14, 2016

The one time when all 3 of the best vocalists of all time were on the chart at the same time. And when every big female legend was on the chart at the same time (Whit, Mariah, Janet, Celine, Madonna). Man, those days.

  10. XoMoDe January 14, 2016

This is what happens when the music industry panders to the ignorance of millennial hipsters and swagfagz who aren’t even old enough to remember Martin and In Living Color.

    • Walker January 15, 2016

Basically. If What’s The 411? predates you, and you were still toddler-age when Destiny’s Child emerged, then don’t comment on…anything.

  11. JOHNVIDAL January 14, 2016

Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Madonna in the same list is WOW. Nowadays list is pathetic except for Adele. How sad. The decline has been so huge in the last 15 years that mainstream music and as a consequence winner at music award shows have become laughable.

    • What now January 14, 2016

You show that you’re in your 50’s every time you comment

      • JOHNVIDAL January 15, 2016

Can´t you see everybody agrees on this? If you can´t recognize the decline it is your problem. And no, I´m not old.

  12. Royalkev January 14, 2016

My iconic queens – Janet and Nippy! 🙂 Janet’s LWNDWY video is one of the sexiest of all time!!! Ugh! What becomes a legend most!… http://2.bp.b*******.com/-jSIFKffygqw/TpwuDZXBI0I/AAAAAAAAHQs/ZYbUmZhvxEk/s1600/blackglama-janet-jackson_2011.jpg

Both (Nip and JJ) actually reached #1 with those hits. These ladies really have 2 of the best careers I’ve ever seen. I’m not surprised to see the top 25 including Madonna, also rounded out by Celine and Mariah. Madge and Mariah’s songs also happened to reach #1! This was basically THE women of music for the last several decades! They’ve practically dominated the charts from the 80’s ’til early/mid/late 00’s ferociously! Add MJ, Prince, Billy Joel and Elton – you’ll find that they make up, probably 50% of all slayage on a Billboard chart!

  13. SPUNKYPOOP January 14, 2016

Back when music mattered and actually made a difference and dent on the charts..Janet Madonna Whitney Mariah Celine all were hugeee.. I love the fact that Janet was always battling on the charts and stood her very own amongst a beast of women. GREAT YEAR OR DECADE for music. RIP
