Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature launched to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past.
Today, we honour the creative force that is Grace Jones. In recent years, the entertainment industry has often found its creativity stifled by tight budgets and the short attention spans of a Snapchat generation.
The price it’s paid for these problems?
The demise of the multi-hyphenate star.
Gliding through music, film, fashion and television, the multi-hyphenate acts of yesteryear came armed with the talent and skill the industry would employ to rake in cash at record stores, movie theatres and runways alike.
With this in mind, the Jamaican Jones undoubtedly stands as one of the best to do it.
So, in honour of her work, we revisit some of her career highlights via the clips waiting below…
Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, the entertainer rose to superstardom aged 18 when she signed with the Wilhelmina Modelling Agency and moved to Paris to model for Yves Saint Laurent.
Her success in modelling would see her transition into an Island Records-backed musician and actress, and catch the attention of Universal Pictures who called on her to star in the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led ‘Conan the Destroyer.’
The rest, as they say, is history.
