For many, the box-office smashing ‘Get Out’ offered the world an innovative and pungent look into the commodification of black people and their bodies.
Alas, after spending the last year receiving praise for raising the public’s consciousness on the matter and standing tall as the year’s most profitable release, the movie now finds itself at the heart of Golden Globe-related drama.
Why?
Find out below…
Original contemporary horror films often find themselves shut out during awards season. So, with this in mind, the studio behind ‘Get Out’ has submitted as a comedy for next year’s Golden Globes with hopes doing so will see it bag a gong on the night.
This news hasn’t gone down well with those who believe the project’s message is too serious to be considered comedic.
Miscategorizing Get Out as a comedy is a sorry attempt to deflate its impact as both a formative horror genre film and exacting critique of white supremacy. https://t.co/NAuNXPSCMJ

The fact that Get Out was nominated for a comedy shows how some ppl didn’t take it seriously and get the point of the film. That movie is a horror film, and the monster was racism.

Black filmmakers: let’s make a cinematic hyperbolic representation of the real ways black bodies are hypersexualized/used commercially and simultaneously disrespected

These white people at the Golden Globes know what they’re doing putting Get Out in the Comedy drama instead of the horror genre as it was

Get out was not a comedy movie but since so many wypipo’s sensitivity was triggered they’re going to put it in that category to help them sleep at night knowing that they’re still white https://t.co/pYbcJGxXrE

Smh @ get out being nominated as a “comedy” for the golden globes. Didn’t know racism, genocide, and the gentrification of our culture was funny .

When you get on Twitter + see that Get Out is categorized as a ‘comedy.’ Really?! That shit was wild and scary AF, and I ain’t even black. How TF is torture funny? Or racism? Or murderous mutherfuckers who auction black bodies?!
Sighz.

Nah son, its a horror movie. Racism based fetishes and cultural appropriation arent jokes. They are scary to MOST people. There are real people like those characters. So if GET OUT is a comedy to you, u aint woke! https://t.co/NTJN6RRd6g

Putting Get Out in the Comedy category is insulting, but aren’t the producers the ones who choose what category to submit it for? So either the GGs are being dismissive or the prods are making a shameful awards grab.

I think we need no further evidence of the sorry state of diversity representation in Hollywood than the inclusion of the brilliant Get Out in the "comedy" category. WTF. https://t.co/Il2XBK9ytw

Ok. So, pertaining to the Golden Globe categories, where do you think this film fits? Last year, The Martian won 'best comedy/musical'.
Get Out had comedic elements but it surrounded drama/horror/satire. But there's no Horror category. Would you rather it not be nominated? pic.twitter.com/XLdvxmpQMe— Courtney Francis (@CourtneyFPhoto) November 15, 2017
Get Out had funny parts but that shit wasn't comedy unless you find the current state of American racism hilarious.

The Golden Globes are to take place on January 7th 2018.
#NowReading: ‘The Delectable Negro.’
Thats shady but hollywood always has been i think black ppl should make our own oscars and the awards be a fist for whom ever wins.
GET OUT was a good movie but not a damn comedy.
The tweet from @kona99 explained it completely. Submitting it as a comedy was the studio’s call in order to get an award, not the Golden Globes call. So the public’s issue needs to be with the studio that submitted it, not the GG.
….but on the other hand, they could have easily submitted it as a drama film, so the complaints are legitimate.
The studios are the ones who submit the film’s. The golden globes don’t select which film’s get considered, they narrow down the submissions to five or 6 nominees. But I didn’t laugh once watching get out and like the one above said, they could have easily submitted it in the drama category because it wasn’t that much of your ‘horror film’ imo. At least it got nominated so I’m here for that. But that’s like putting a rapper in a rock category, doesn’t make sense.
It happens all the time. Actors are often promoted for supporting actor categories despite being a lead or co-lead just to have more chances. It works liek that. Some people need to stop making everything about… I don´t know why. Believe me, the film has more possibilities like this. Does anybody think that film (which was very good) is deserving of best film OF THE YEAR???? lol Especially among dramas? People really don´t know what they talk about. It was very well made, but teh concept was far from new. They are not going to reward this film like that. Not when the bunch of independent art films are just starting to come.
Also, I did laugh a few times with the film. The few scenes with the leading character´s friend were there for comedic relief. And it was pretty funny.
