Chart Rewind [Hot 100]: Kelly Rowland’s ‘Like This’ Peaked This Week in 2007

Published: Friday 17th Jul 2020 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective segments, ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay,’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our latest feature –  Chart Rewind – serves as a variation of our Retro Rewind assay to salute an entire era of music history.

This week we’d like to spotlight ‘Like This’ – the inaugural single from Kelly Rowland‘s sophomore solo album, ‘Ms. Kelly.’

Join us inside:

A #1 hit and GRAMMY win (as assistant on Nelly‘s ‘Dilemma’) as well as Gold-certified sales for her first solo project, 2002’s ‘Simply Deep,’ proved Destiny’s Child alum Kelly Rowland’s viability as a solo star.  Yet, as with most artists, avoidance of the “sophomore slump” is the ultimate test of durability.

Four years after first impacting the Billboard 200 with her debut studio album, Rowland was readying her second turn at bat when an unexpected leak of her second LP – originally titled ‘My Story’ – hit the net.  Undeterred, the singer and team revamped, repackaged, and re-polished the project under the changed name, ‘Ms. Kelly,’ and kicked off its accompanying era with the Eve-accompanied ‘Like This.’

Produced by Polow Da Don and penned by Sean Garrett, the bop nabbed headlines for its personal lyrical content (which featured a jab at former fiancee/football star Roy Williams). Thanks to a grueling promo blitz, a house party-themed Mike Ruiz-directed video, and warm reception from R&B radio, ‘Like’ peaked at #30 on the US Hot 100 this week in 2007 – marking her third visit to the chart region as a solo artist.  It fared even better on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart as it managed to reach #7 there and later proved to be an international hit placing inside the Top 20 in Australia and Top 5 of the British and Irish charts.

As we celebrate ‘Like This’ for introducing music lovers to the brazen, unapologetically sexy version of the DC3 belle we know today, look below to see who joined her in the top 30 this week 13 years ago.

Like This aged way better than many, many songs on that chart. Kelly deserved way better smh just like how her new song Coffee is way better than the R&B songs on radio right now..smh and they say it isn’t colorism yeah sure. I see it with everyone even Chloe and Halle if they were lighter or even not black they would have been way bigger

What you wrote is stupid ok it’s harder for her, but she didn’t promote “COFFEE” her team is the problem why she never succeed. Where she is now??? The only thing she does is promoting Beyoncé in interviews even when nobody asked her she speaks about Beyoncé sorry, but she’s acting like a loser.

I hate when people try to blame other for the things she and her team are doing wrong. How long is she now in the industry and till this day she can not handle her business and her team that’s the reason why Coffee didn’t succeed!! It’s her fault……

The problem is people like you who always bring up beyonce. Kelly has the right to talk about who ever she wants to talk about that’s her sister. Shes asked about the group and she responds. We are in a pandemic so she promotes they way she wants and not the way you want.

LIKE THIS is a classic song by her. I remember bumping that song non stop and it has aged so well! Love this song! One of her best lead singles by far. However we need something new now KELLY

Like this is still a hot song today! I can’t believe she agreed with her label to released ghetto follow up. That song is simply trash. “Told ya I was gonna hump like this, then turn around kelly did a b:o:o:b:s job😂🤣😂🤣

So good and the album still had some great tracks. “Still In Love With My Ex” and the remix and others have always been favorites of mine over the years

    • TC July 17, 2020

To this day I play “still in love with my x” remix and have revival! That’s the version that should have made the album and she could’ve thrown a better known rapper on it.
