Mariah Carey isn’t shying away from any topics in her upcoming memoir ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey.’
Find out what we mean below…
In 1997, Carey released self-proclaimed ‘magnum opus’ and fan favourite album, ‘Butterfly’ to the masses. Embracing a new authentic sound and style while enduring a divorce from then husband and label executive Tommy Mottola, Mimi consciously followed her authentic self and blossomed into the MC we know and love today.
In her upcoming memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’, the diva reveals that her new found singledom at the time led to a brief relationship with baseball player, Derek Jeter. All during the finalizing of her divorce.
Confirming the theories of her ‘Lambily’, Carey tells that the fan-favorite song ‘The Roof’ from ‘Butterfly’ was indeed about Jeter.
In an interview with Vulture, she confesses to her and Jeter’s kiss atop the roof of his apartment as being the inspiration behind the song, while comparing her former home with the ‘controlling’ Mottola to Sing Sing Correctional Facility in NYC. She said:
“I can never forget that moment, I mean, it’s not like it was some intensely deep, intellectually stimulating — again, it was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way because it helped me get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.”
Furthermore, the diva revealed that the Hot 100 #1 single from the album, ‘My All’, was also about a night in Puerto Rico with Jeter too.

It’s no secret that Carey’s marriage to Mottola wasn’t an experience she enjoyed, and it’s great that she’s speaking so candidly about it. With a career spanning over three decades, selling over 200 million records worldwide, it’s about time Mariah shared her story, her way.

What I mean is, it’s not real HD. It may say HD but it definitely is not.
Love this! “The Roof” is one of my favourite songs from her entire discography, and it so effortlessly encompasses everything I love about her: her pen game, her ability to create songs that meld hip hop and R&B together and her vocals!
And, let’s face it, we all knew these 2 songs weren’t about Tommy.
Same. The Roof is easily one of my top 5 favs of MC and shows why she’s a musical prodigy when it comes to writing and not just the greatest female vocalist.

This brings a whole new meaning to The Roof and My All. I’ll never think of them the same way again. And can we just give the good sis a hand for the marketing here. She keeps teasing out juicy bits from the memoir, feeding public interest. And rarities comes out the same week as the book.
Let me guess the song HONEY is about her F bubby Eminem😂🤣 “when you love c-u-m Over me”
We hardcore lambs knew it all along. Some of us even think the song ‘Fourth of July’ was what she was feeling about her relationship with Jeter. When Mariah refers to the 20 million dollar home she was captive in with her soon to be ex-husband as ‘sing-sing’ it’s about to get real in her forthcoming memoir.
Exactly, the Roof is pure magic from the piano intro til the last second. That’s the Mariah I love. She’s got so many gems for people who love R&B, beyond all those « wise ballads » the general public knows her for.
The Butterfly album is really fantastic.
Breakdown is also a favorite of mine. The cover of The Beautiful Ones.
The Thank God I Found You remix is my joint. Crybaby from the Rainbow era is also an underrated gem.
I could go on and on. Despite all her career’s ups and downs, she’s been giving us beautiful music and stories and she should definitely be appreciated and celebrated while she’s still here with us.
Who cares….
Absolutely adore both The Roof and My All
