From The Vault: Janet Jackson – ‘Escapade’

Published: Sunday 27th Mar 2011 by Trent

Turn your clocks back almost 21 years ago (or just visit YouTube) and you will be able to enjoy this week’s From The Vault pick in all its glory. ‘Escapade’ was released as the 3rd official single from Janet Jackson’s iconic ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ in 1990. This particular performance of the song occurred during the 1990 ‘American Music Awards’.

In addition to being an international hit, the song dominated the US charts and became Jackson’s 3rd #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. ‘Escapade’ was also the 3rd of an amazing 18 consecutive top 10 singles for the entertainer in a streak lasting from 1989 until 1998.

Although Jackson was lip-syncing for her life here, it frankly did not matter. Her choreography was almost flawless and she delivered so much energy that her miming was practically unnoticeable.

This is the type of performance that Britney Spears should be doing at this stage in her career. However, with her fans exalting her every lazy, sluggish and insultingly dull move, Spears will undoubtedly continue to just shake her stringy weave and flail her arms unchecked. She’s so lucky.

  8. roundFOUR March 27, 2011

    Cryingggg at that Britney shade..

I’ve been saying this since homegirl came out. Britney is nothing but a studio dancer. She’s spoon fed every single move and none of them are hard or difficult. Ex: S**** 4 U video. And this is coming from an actual dancer..

Janet however? She can’t sing but she’s an actual entertainer

  9. TRGreaves March 27, 2011

great performance! and great choice trent!

  10. jj March 27, 2011

@roundfour i wanna see you dance, show us what yo got!

  11. DUNKFAN March 27, 2011

Janet has performance in her 40’s that would put Brit to shame.

Janet Jackson is a POP ICON. Probably the best female performer in Pop music. Her performance style has been copied so much at this point it should be criminal. Her choreography is legendary and second to NONE! Yet people always try to dub Britney as a Madonna rip off. When in fact she is 10 times more influenced by Janet. It shows in her music and even moreso in her performance style. Janet started that hands free mic and choreography thing. Miss You Much, Escapade, were some of the first videos to ever feature choreography throughout the entire video. Her brother later used the idea for his Bad album. People don’t often give Janet her credit but she was and is still snatching wigs! Pay hommage b******!

  13. thatsabaddbitch March 27, 2011

As I’ve said before, all hail Queen Janet Jackson. If your fav could then they would. Your fav could f****** never. Janet performs better than these talentless young b****** out here now at age 44. Eat it b******, eat it

  14. ThePleasurePrincipal March 27, 2011

When I seen the first 60 seconds of this performance first quote: “Get the f*** off Janet!”. Janet is one of the greatest female entertainers that I probably will ever see. This was indeed a great throwback. Thank you TGJ.

    WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???????
This song is from the album “Rhythm Nation 1814”, which was released on the 19THSEPTEMBER 1990 and this song was released on the 8TH JANUARY 1990 – The last time I checked Michael Jackson’s “Bad” was released on the 31ST AUGUST 1990 – so how could Michael have copied Janet’s concept for his Bad album?

Hence your comment – ‘Her brother later used the idea for his Bad album’.

No shade, just asking : )

I could not have said this better myself… I just came from seeing her live on Friday. She is amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I love how you’ve mentioned that she is probably the best performer in pop music. OMG, you are so right! It is criminal how much people steal from the Queen. She is truly the Queen of pop music – she gave it substance. Out of all her peers, she’s the one still in her prime(or atleast the one most like herself when she debuted) and the one who’s music is still relevant (no gimmicks, no hype). Just talent! She’s the true Queen all day long!

She reminds me of britney.. i dont know what it is… oh yeh they move mime non stop.

  23. Robier March 27, 2011

Yesssssssss I remember. Thank God janet danced till her 40’s and didn’t lose it at 20 something

  24. Spunkypoop March 27, 2011

Janet never lost anything! Britney on the other never had it in my OPINION!

  25. 123456 March 27, 2011

she never sings live and has no voice but rihanna is untalented

    lmao janet is a flop

mariah madonna all do something but janet flopped 564x back to back

    janet is a joke

  26. Janetluvr March 27, 2011

Janet undeniably is a living legend and for all the right reasons. She has nothing to prove as she’s been consistent for so long and still reigns over all the young girls trying to replicate and appropriate what Miss Jackson has created!!!

  27. Anthony March 27, 2011

What happened to Janet, since Michael Jackson’s passing, she should be next in line to take over the pop scene and making hot new music, instead she is on tour with her old crap. Its bad when an entertainer line herself in the Jackson family is alive and others outside of the family in the music business are being claimed the next MJ. Get with it Janet

  28. Nojistno March 27, 2011

Love Janet….Sigh don’t you all miss when are artist actually had to have talent? Music today is just lacking in something I couldn’t figure it out but now I know. People used to have a drive to entertain now it’s all about making money and popping out hits without letting it simmer into something special. Today’s music sound like bad demo’s not all but most. Glad I got to get into music as a child in the 90’S

  29. Anne March 27, 2011

NOJISTNO -the 90’s?? The 90’s can’t compete with the 80’s, 70’s, or 60’s. Music in the 90’s was pretty good and certainly better than today in general, but it would not be my decade of choice.

  30. GROW UP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! March 27, 2011

ALL HAIL TO THE QUEEN. RIRI, BEY, CIC. KERI, BRIT THIS IS MS JACKSON. GOTTA LOVE HER.

LEAVE BRIT ALONE. TRENT PLEASE SWALLOW SAMS PENIS AND CHOKE ALREADY

  31. Tha_truth March 27, 2011

I like this performance and all, but if you look at Paula Abdul’s performance of “The Way That You Love Me” at the same awards show, you’d say “Janet Who????” Just Sayin’…..

  32. Chileplease March 27, 2011

Tran can’t even dance like that anymore!

  33. Dave March 27, 2011

Dead @ the commentary (Britney shade).

  34. keith March 28, 2011

Inasmuch as this is probably my least favorite Janet song and video, this performance clearly explains why she made her mark on the industry. Energy, stage presence, crisp and fluid steps…all elements of a grade-A entertainer. Wish she’d bring the intro back to the live stage, I’m just sayin’……

    Thanks for the throwback!

  35. keith March 28, 2011

Would it be possible to make this clip MANDATORY viewing for Britney Spears? LMAO…….

  36. rashad March 28, 2011

baby i am a janet stan, but ima tell you now, if you saw paula abdul’s opening performance for this same awards show you would die! paula abdul shut it DOWN in what, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest award show performances EVER!

and granted, i am not takin away from this performance becuz it was great, but baby paula shut it down! sad that paula gets virtually no propz for her influence (regardless of how ALLEGEDLY limited it is)!

  37. COS March 28, 2011

Wow…Ms Janet (if u Nasty) SLAYED it!!!!!!!!!
But agree with the other 2 comments : i just saw PAULA ABDUL’S performance…..I still need few minutes to catch my jaw (still sitting quietly on the floor)….

Trent i dont know it u got to see this, but m glad she did it (Kat Graham: Bonnie from Vampire Diaries): it shows to the youngin the influence Janet did have…
She’s clearly not a GREAT singer but dancing wise, it’s pretty good and she can carry a tune for what it’s worth…and lovin the mash-up between Love will never do and Escapade….

Of couse Paula killed it on the same stage as Janet she was her choregrapher back in the 80’s for CONTROL. At the end of the day Janet Jackson has longevity, and is more influential in pop music, especially when it comes to the stage. JANET JACKSON IS SECOND TO NONE WHEN IT COMES TO STAGE PERFORMING. As a fan of Janet Jackson since the 80’s in my eyes Janet Jackson has only had 1 off performance and that was 09 American Music Awards.

  39. B March 28, 2011

This is what u call FLAWLESS!!! It’s amazing that a performance from 20 years ago can SLAY all the artists of today!!! Gotta love Ms. Jackson!!!

  40. Onyx March 30, 2011

From a true Britney fan, I love the girl (Britney), but she really needs to step it up. Her live perfomances are so dull. It’s almost as if she doesn’t want to do this anymore. She still makes great music, and still is one of pop music’s greatest contenders as an icon… The girl is already a legend in her own league, and she needs to show that. On Janet being the queen… ahem, ahem… Queen of what??? I love Janet, but the girl became a use-to-be a long time ago. She’s good, hell, she’s way a better performer than Brit, but Brit is still in the game and way out of Janet’s league.

  41. Anon May 15, 2011

@ onyx Janet is the queen of the stage. Not some drugged up, mental case, like ur fav!

Brit may still sell, but she moves like an old woman.

We will see the reviews for her s***** tour coming up, compared to Janet’s rave reviews for her amazing tour!

  42. futurestar July 23, 2011
