From The Vault: Mya – ‘Case Of The Ex’

Published: Sunday 3rd Apr 2011 by Trent

Having some relationship issues with a pesky ex? If that’s then case then Mya has the remedy with this week’s From The Vault. The Tricky Stewart-produced ‘Case of the Ex’ was issued as the 2nd single from her ‘Fear of Flying’ LP in November 2000 and became her highest charting single as a solo artist to date, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

This is yet another example of how true talent can easily get overlooked and swept away in the industry. Mya is a competent singer and a very talented dancer yet she has been unable to find her way back onto the charts for quite some time.

Hopefully, history won’t repeat itself with another famous dancer – Ciara. Besides, both acts would be more than welcome to have a comeback and replace the lifeless ‘entertainers’ who somehow manage to get praised for their mediocrity.

Thoughts?

“The uploader has not made this video available in your country.”

Shes just like ciara. If ure a dance artist (yup) u need good songs bc once ur songs are bad, u flop.

she and ciara flopped bc of medicore record and its funny u talk about mediocrity but those chicks or THAT chick u talk about always has a good song left right and center which ur “dancers” never had.

    Another dorky commentary by Trent.

    Mya, a competant dancer? Sure…whatever.
Mya, a competent singer? No. She sounds like Mini Mouse.

    This song was the s***.

I miss people like Mya, Brandy and Ashanti. Those girls were it back in the day.

  5. Hot_Acid April 3, 2011

This song is not about Mya having problem with her ex! It’s about her current boyfriend/lover still mingling with his ex. Get your fact straight!!!

    But def, she is overlooked!

  6. BAD BYTCH April 3, 2011

HOW CAN U REALLY ASK A BUNCH OF KIDS UNDER 25 ABOUT MYA?.. THATS BEFORE THEIR TIME TO EVEN HAVE AN OPINION. MYA WAS HOT WHEN MOST OF YALL WERE IN GRADE SCHOOL

This is a classic Mya joint, one of my personal favourites! Hopefully she can link up with a producer that can bring her back to the light with the Mya sound!

This kind of makes me sad. Mya was an amazing dancer (ex. Janet Jackson Tribute) Mya has always put out good singles, she just doesn’t get the play anymore.. This buisness changes so often, but back then it was still talent.. If you couldn’t sing then you were dancing, if you couldn’t dance then you were singing.. Now if you can’t do either your still on stage.

  10. dfekndfk April 3, 2011

Aw, this used to be my jam but trent you really need to sit down…..CIARA CAN DANCE YES, BUT SHE IS NOT A GOOD ARTIST…..

She should be a back up dancer coz she doesnt have true talents…..ALWAYS PROMOTING FLOPS I SEE.

  11. Dave April 3, 2011

    *Agrees with NATE*

These woman deserve a spot in this industry. Both super multi-talented as competent singer, exceptional dancers, performers, writers, & etc. This song was my ish. Used to love Mya back in the day.

  17. Dave April 3, 2011

You know what would be sweet? If Mya & Ciara did a collabo & did a video to it. They would KILL!

  18. Jordan April 3, 2011

IDK Trent, i was killin some Mariah “Prisoner of Love” and saw it on your top five a week later, then I put this in my player about a month ago and now you posted it. I’ll need for you to stop stealing my mind Lol.

    This was great!

  19. Trail April 3, 2011

Who the hell ever thought that Mya was a great singer, or performer or entertainer? This s*** is funny!!! She was ok, nothing spectacular but nothing bad.She was just ok.

  20. yoyo April 3, 2011

Mya – 4 octave vocal range, writer, producer, arranger, dancer, actress
Ciara – 2.5 octave vocal range, writer, producer, dancer, model
Ashanti – 3 octave vocal range, writer, producer, actress, model
Brandy – 3 octave vocal range, singer, dancer, writer, actress
All four 4 of them flopped because they wouldn’t sell their souls to Devil for success like 2 other well known Black female singers.

  21. Robier April 3, 2011

Bwaahaaaa I love ur comments. lol true

  22. FURIOUS STYLES April 3, 2011

    FLOP!

    Rihanna dances better than her.

  23. FURIOUS STYLES April 3, 2011

She was trying too hard to be like Rihanna in this video. Old h**

  24. L April 3, 2011

    @Furious Styles
uuuh Rihanna was not even famous at that time…

    Mya is the truth.

She does it all sing, dance, write, produce, engineer and act.

She unfortunately will take some time to come back full circle in the U.S. because Mya “knows” the ins/outs of the industry. There is a LOT going on in there that she has distanced herself from and probably has suffered career wise because of it.

But it’s better you stay true to self, than anything/one else. At least she does her thing in Japan and is popular there.

Still rooting for her to come back though!!

P.S. Her album “K.I.S.S.” is to be released in Japan and probably digitally elsewhere THIS month!

And she is featured on Trina’s mixtape on a dope track called “Can I”.

  26. gus April 3, 2011

    mya is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Mike April 4, 2011

The reason Mya fell off was because she simply couldn’t stand out from other popular female acts of that time. For example look at Lady Marmalde Mya was totally upstaged and forgotten on that song. To make things worse she had such huge competition among the likes of Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, J.Lo, Pink and much more. Mya just couldn’t stand a chance because her songs were just blahh aand didn’t have the passazz it needed for her to stand out against other popular female artists at that time.

  28. UALLSUCK April 4, 2011

Mya is super talented ,the problem with her is that she lack personality. When Lady Marmalade came out I kinda forgot she was even there. You had Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil Kim. All 3 ladies that were: fierce, had attitude and stage presence something Mya was lacking. Sadly her time has finish and I can’t even see her making a comeback since the music industry has change to promoting s***** singers now. But she has accomplished a lot in a short time that she was relevant.

Mya is talented. But she’s the kind of artist thats flies under the radar. I hope she can comeback and be successful. She’s cool.

  31. KD April 4, 2011

    @ YOYO:

Is selling your soul to the devil a sure fire recipe for success, wow…I wish I knew that before I wasted my time with my studies. Do you know how one would go about selling their soul to the devil…I wouldn’t mind not having to bust my ass on my 9-5.

  32. i&i(yardie) April 4, 2011

I used to stan for this chick in my early high school days. I have her 2 first albums. Her 1st single “all about me” is still my favourite from her. She is a decent singer and was a very good dancer (I don’t know if she can still move like her earlier days). I would love to hear new music from her. Love X3 her acoustic performance of “Riding”. More Mya music please! I wonder if she and breezy do a duet together?
