After years of murmurs about a tell-all special being in the works, Janet Jackson ended 2021 by officially lifting the lid on news she’d be bringing a biographical documentary to Lifetime.

First Look: Janet Jackson Unleashes Epic Trailer for Lifetime Documentary Special

Simply named ‘Janet,’ the epic look at the Pop icon's life came courtesy of a two-night TV event that saw her give her dedicated fans a raw and unvarnished look into her story as she candidly spoke on everything from Justin Timberlake and the 2004 Super Bowl fiasco to the death of her brother/King of Pop Michael Jackson, previous marriages, becoming a mother for the first time at 50-years-old, and more.

Beyond its unprecedented access to the usually elusive star, the special featured appearances and commentary from her musical peers and friends such as Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, Ciara, Rev. Al Sharpton, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, members of her family, and others who knew her best.
And though buzz was ample leading into the doc's January 28 unveiling, social media exploded with Janet talk across the two-night special with the hashtag #JanetJacksonDoc ranking #1 across all broadcast and cable television during its premiere nights - garnering 1.1 million interactions throughout airings over the weekend and becoming the top social program over the last year for Lifetime and A&E since the jaw-dropping 'Surviving R. Kelly.'
What's more, the Janet special revitalized interest in her iconic catalog - sending some of her biggest titles soaring on real-time sales tallies.

And while the tune or an accompanying LP didn't manifest in 2022, we're giddy with excitement to see if and how she answers calls for new music in 2023.

It was a very good documentary….and it shows how humble and classy she is because she could’ve turned that documentary out and the many people, particularly men who did her wrong, but she didn’t. And Just when I thought she would tear Justin’s punk ass a new one including Les Moonves, she didn’t, she kept it cute…but Oh I would have loved to had been a fly on the wall behind the scenes when all of that went down. I know she cried a lot and I know she’s gone through a lot, a lot more than she spoke on. I will say this, outside of her epic catalog of music, she is indeed a strong woman, and these days I see she’s gotten more spiritual to in her journey and good for her. She’s always going to be a class act. Legendary, Iconic and respected.

Well said, Troy. No matter the insults hurled at her or about her, they cannot and will not affect her legacy, her contribution to global music and the doors she’s opened for black artists in general, both male AND female. Super happy for her great year and continued success. Insults and degrading comments will do nothing to stop her. The success train left the station 30+ years ago 👏🏾🫶🏾
