New Song: Teairra Mari – ‘Come Back To Me’

Published: Tuesday 19th Jul 2011 by Rashad

R&B vixen Teairra Mari has found herself stuck on many a failed comeback trail.  While there have been a slew of ‘leaks’ and offerings from the singer recently, the latest is a remake of Janet Jackson‘s classic Rhythm Nation hit ‘Come Back To Me’.

How did the ‘Cause A Scene’ diva fare?  You decide after the jump:

To say the singer did the song justice would be an understatement.  With so many of R&B’s young’ns feeling the need to prove their vocal merit, they tend to remake the classics and overdo them. Thanks Ms. Mari for saving the overkill.  However, it is important to note the difference between ‘overkill’ and ‘giving the song one’s own flavor’.  In such, while Mari’s restraint was greatly appreciated, the ‘Make Her Feel Good’ singer failed to make the song her own.  Either way, here’s hoping this (along with the singer’s other musical ventures) brings her the recognition she deserves.

Wonder what Miss Jackson’s feedback to this ode would be?

I wasn’t impressed. Teairra can sing, but it’s really not easy to give a song the same feeling Janet does. It’s also not easy to emulate her tone and sing with the same sweetness. This was just a miss.

This must be her millionth song off of her million mixtapes…..she is working hard though…gotta give her props..

  6. MISHKA July 19, 2011

Teairra Mari just needs to find what makes HER marketable.

We all know she can sing but she’s so easily forgettable. Since she doesn’t want to hang it up, she might need to make some drastic changes to hit it big.

I LOVE Teairra and I wish she could have this approach in her solo material too.She is SMOKING HOT and s*** as hell, but I don’t want to see another hoodrat, supposed-to-be s*** video or another song with sexual content from her. It’s time for her to explore new things and find her niche.

  10. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) July 19, 2011

I meant in her ORIGINAL material, not solo.

I like what Tearria brought to the song. This being one of my fav Janet ballads, she sounded really good. Good Job, i gotta check her mixtape out now.

It was cute, but not a hit like the original…

I Agree 110% with what Mishka commented. The whole reason Rhianna got to keep her contract and she didn’t, is because one was more marketable. Teairra can sing, no question with that. But she still hasn’t (to me) defined who she is as an artist. Every mixtape singles sounds completely different. When your trying to establish your name again and a record that can hurt you. I’m not saying she need to cut her hair and go pop, but she needs to do something.

I’m sorry, but you can’t touch a Janet song. She can sing, her version was okay (for a kareokee bar); but i can’t support this.

I like the beat although it has been sampled.she has so much potential.you just have to wonder, what the hell really happened?I hope she gets back to mainstream and drop an album.Trey Songz used to do mixtapes.Look where he is..

I think she did a great job and I’m a Janet fan. She needs more music like this, more mellow and mid tempo. I think some people just don’t want to like Teairra, it doesn’t matter what she does. I think Janet would be pleased.

  19. BrealK July 19, 2011

Good job. She definitely has talent.

Well, teairra has a pretty voice but janet is too hard to cover. She has a distinctive voice that no one can replicate properly. This doesn’t do anything for her. And yes, I agree teairra mari is very boring and unoriginal and needs to find out what makes her so special as an artist cuz when I look at her I see a combination of other artists. I don’t know who teairra is as an artist tho.

Wow , has it really been twenty years since the Rhythm Nation CD. One thing that cannot be denied is Janet’s artistry and influence on popular music, many of today’s female artist live in the house that Janet constructed. Janet has never been a powerhouse vocalist and some have debated her ability to sing, however for me it’s not about the high notes, it’s about the ability to capture your audience through the intensity of your vocals and or performance. In this category Janet trumps. Her voice is small, sweet, emotional and angelic.
While listening to Janet coo on Come back to me, I realize that her low register is her greatest asset, their she sings with great vulnerability , in between her breathes, you can feel a woman singing from her soul, telling her story of a love lost. For instance, my undying love for you, won’t let me wait.” to the vocal melodic soulful ending, don’t want to let you, her harmonies are rich and her voice lays perfect against the soft tones of the instrument.

As for Teairra Mari, the greatest form of appreciation is duplication, however with that said. She needed to add something different to the formula, maybe a jazzier version with some great adlibs or a more colorful version, this song was a number one rhythm and blues cut and reached number two on the pop charts. Clearly, the new version does not have the same substance that original had. But a noble attempt, Janet is a very difficult artist to convey , she has a one of a kind voice, soft, sweet, emotional and soulful. I still remember hearing Let’s wait awhile for the first time. Janet is one of those artist that you hear on the radio and know immediately who she is.

You guys needs to STFU! Janet’s stank old ass could never sing! That’s all she did was whisper in the damn song. Teairra sounds a million times better than Janet Fatson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. NAYAH82 July 20, 2011

Hell naw!!! Who told her to remake one of my favorite song from JJ? it was bad enough when Plies used the beat for his busted baby song. Smh

  27. kikibeckles July 20, 2011

No justice to this song at all. Tierra needs to bring it back to the drawing board and try again. Or just don’t touch this classic.

  28. nice_gurl July 20, 2011

I think she did a great job. Most covers are never as good as the original, but her voice is soulful and I enjoyed it.

  29. Hmmmmm July 20, 2011

Being this is my favorite Janet song EVER, I was worried Teairra was going to p*** me off! But she didn’t do such a bad job! It’s no where near as good as the original… there’s just something so personal about the way Janet sings this song and her “I miss you so much… wherever you are… I love you” break down, that just cannot be copied. But I’m glad Teairra tried to keep the same tone of the song instead of compleatly remaking and RUINING it. Nonetheless… I’ll stick with the original!

  30. UM….NO July 20, 2011

She looks like a man and sounds like every other run of the mill black chick out of church that thinks she can sing like SWV. No thanks. Aint nobody comin back to her sounding like that. Nope. She cant even hit the low notes. Sheesh.

  31. JJfan86 July 20, 2011

I listened to her version this morning, and like many of the other comments, this is my ultimate FAVORITE ballad by Janet Jackson, I love Come Back To Me, the orignal version, neither the Piies & Ne-Yo’s version nor this version by Teairra does it for me. She’s very talented, there’s no question about that but she and her producers will just need to find songs for her that will work for her. For those who know how Janet uses her harmonies in her songs and the sincerity in her voices espcially in her ballads, that’s hard to do. I’m sure Janet, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis would be flattered by this version but if it’s not broke, please don’t try to fix it.. 🙂 I’m sorry but I have to give this a thumbs down

  32. BEYYYOOONNCCCEEE REPPER July 20, 2011

STOP HATTING SO DAMN MUCH ON A STRONG SUCCESSFUL BLACK WOMAN!!!! FIRST OF ALL NOT TRYING TO DISS JANET JACKSON BUT MARIE IS A WAYYYYYYY BETTER SINGER SO OFCOURSE IT WAS GREATTTT!!!! SHE IS GREAT

  33. chris July 20, 2011

True Teairra is a good singer, but this was not a good cover, I’m sorry. It’s not really her fault, it’s the way the compilation was made. The tempo is way too fast and her vocal coach needs to be fired. It’s not that she can’t sing, she’s just hitting the wrong notes in contrast to the melody.

  34. Princebarbietv July 20, 2011

    I loved it

  35. Misfit July 21, 2011

PeoPle who can’t sing don’t have careers for over 30 yrs, and sell over 100 million albums ww.

@ Lola and rest if you haters, sit the f*** down !! This basic b**** can’t ever match Janet! Get it right!
