It appears that things are finally shaping up for the Whitney Houston-produced remake of famed 70s musical ‘Sparkle’. Originally reported to star late R&B songbird Aaliyah (and later with names like Raven Symone and Paula Patton at one time considered), it appears that the film will soon be making its way into the production stages with Jordin Sparks signing on to take the lead role. Houston will play her mother.
BET‘s ‘The Game’ creator Mara Brock Akil has signed on to lead the behind the scenes action. No word on who will contribute to the movie’s soundtrack.
The announcement comes shortly after news that Houston would be reprising her role in the Waiting To Exhale sequel, ‘Getting To Happy’, being shot later this year.

my sentiments is with all the commenters above me, i honestly dont see Jordin in this part, i saw the movie when i was younger. Aaliyah was a way better fit. i have no problem with replacing Aaliyah but it should be with someone more credible, come to think of it i cant tthink of any singer out now who can pull it off. They should hire an actress ….who can ACT!! even if she can’t sing they can always use a voice double. Acting is the paramounce here.

Ugh! Here we go! Look, I am an Aaliyah fan, I am a HUGE Aaliyah fan, but why do people act like she was this untouchable being?! Let’s face it, Aaliyah was NOT the best singer, actress or performer! She may have left her mark in theshort time that she was here but there were certainly others that could have easily outshined her! Let’s be real!
The girl is dead, she died ten years ago! Of course they are gonna have to replace her in movies cause she is NOT here anymore! What other choice do the directors have?!? Should they just not make the movie just because some people can’t see anyone else in her place? That’s ridiculous! They replaced her in Honey and The Matrix sequels too, those movies did just fine without her in them. We all know how huge the Matrix films were so clearly her not being in them didn’t hurt the film at all.
Aaliyah was only in 2 movies her entire career and its not like either of those movies or her performance were Oscar contenders. We really didn’t get to see her true talent as an actress so who are ya’ll to criticize Jordin’s acting ability when we haven’t even seen it yet? Obviously the producers saw something in Jordin they liked that’s why she got the part!
We will never know what Aaliyah COULD have been, but we just have to let it go. Don’t attack other artists, such as Bey or Jordin, because they are here to enjoy opportunities that Aaliyah can’t! Do you really think Aaliyah would want her fans to be disrespectful to other artist on her behalf?! No because she wasn’t that type of person! Jordin got the role,

Anywho, congrats to Jordin! Its a good look for her since her singing career has been kinda stalled recently. I guess we shall see if she can act well enough to pull it off. I am skeptical but I won’t judge until I’ve seen it. I’m always sketical when they remake a classic, cause it’s usually never as good as the first, but I guess we will see.

I think this role would have been best acted by Aaliyah. Since my girl is in heaven, I don’t know who could play the role. I don’t think Jordin should play lead, it should be someone with a higher celebrity like Raven or KeKe Palmer would be good.

your right, a lot of people give Aaliyah more credit then others might think she doesn’t deserve, but there is also the ones like you who completely discredit her. You say that she was only in two movies for her entire career, you fail to acknowledge the fact that she wasn’t given the opportunity to star in the countless amounts of movies she was already signed to star in before her death. Her singing, acting, dancing was far from mediocre, I completely disagree with you on that. You make it seem as though everything she did was forgettable, and it could easily be done again, when that definitely is not the case; my point is proven with all the Artists who have tried to do what she has done and failed. I agree with you about the comparisons, she shouldn’t be compared to anyone either but it’s human nature, if the movie was originally supposed to be for one person who was actually a perfect fit, and then it’s given to another who doesn’t really have an acting resume, it’s natural for people to show disdain for it. Nonetheless Jordin should still be given a chance. You Never know, maybe this could be her role.

As for Jordin Sparks, she’s pretty and she has a great voice. Can she act? Well, I’m sure when Jennifer Hudson was announced for Dreamgirls a lot of haters were saying the same stuff as they are about Jordin now. But Jenniffer without any experience did a great job and won an oscar. If Jordin was hired it means that the studio and producer trust in her. From the videos I’ve seen, she seems a natural in front of the camera. Give the girl a chance.
Anyways for me though this is a Whitney movie and she’s the real star. I wonder who else will be in the cast, hopefully a few other known names cause I don’t know who the heck Mike Epps is and I’m sure most people don’t even know who Jordin Sparks is. Whitney Houston is the one that will get all the attention to the movie.

you’ll have to excuse me for speakin on behalf of @VA STAND UP but i cant help it cuz u totally misconstrued that poor persons words. 1st he did acknowledge that she’d been signed on to Honey and 2 matrix movies. Thats why those movies were in their comment in the 1st place and they specifically said she was “replaced”. S/he didnt say Aaliyah she was mediocre, what they said is that it wasnt the best. I doubt even her biggest (sane) fan would say Aaliyah was the best singer of her generation. Personally id give her more credit for her dancing but again she was out in the 90s when Janet was still killing in videos/ performances. Ciara is easily a better dancer than Aaliyah.

I actually never saw Sparkle, but I’ve heard of it for years. I think I’ll brush up on some classic movies this upcoming weekend and check it out. I don’t have any thoughts on what I should really expect. I’m just happy that Whitney is active and getting back into film. I can’t wait to see ‘Getting to Happy’. I’m a huge Aaliyah fan also, but eventually someone else would have come along and deserve to be offered this role besides her (like someone said, it’s been 10 years). I see that most people don’t think Jordin is a good fit, but I hope she’s up for the challenge.
