Watch: Keri Hilson ‘Loses Control’ on AOL, Talks ‘Vocal Issues’

Published: Wednesday 14th Sep 2011 by Rashad

“Pretty Girl Rock’ starlet Keri Hilson may be rocking stages in a town near you, but that didn’t stop the singer from taking time to chat with AOL’s ‘The Boombox’ recently.  The Decatur darling dished on everything from her current tour with Lil’ Wayne (‘I Am Music Tour’) and prepping the follow-up to her acclaimed sophomore project ‘No Boys Allowed‘ to fighting through vocal damage in promotion of that record.

Aside from taking to the stage to perform her latest ‘Lose Control’, Hilson also hinted at hopes for silver screen  appearances.  More on Miss Keri Baby after the jump:

Via Boombox:

The title of your first album, ‘In a Perfect World…’ dealt with the idea that no one is perfect. ‘No Boys Allowed’ went a step further into female self-empowerment. Where is your head now, going into this third album?

‘No Boys Allowed,’ for me, was a lot more aggressive. This next record, I have no idea. A little more emotional, maybe a little more vulnerable, judging from my life, without saying any more I think that’s the tone.

How far are you into that process?

I’m not far at all [laughs]. I haven’t started the third album. I haven’t started recording it, I haven’t even really started thinking about it. I’m still promoting here in the US.  I’m also promoting overseas because ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ is a brand new record over there. So I’m really excited about that.

Do you have other interests besides music?

Besides music, I have a real passion for interior design. I’m thinking about having an agency for interior designers, because I could live vicariously through them. I don’t have time to do it myself.

Do you feel like other artists are paying attention to what you’re doing, or biting you at all?

No, I’m not concerned with that.

What about television and film? Are those mediums you’re interested in branching into?

I was a theater major in college, and I grew up doing musical theater, so acting is another love of mine. I’ve been reading scripts. I’m just waiting for the perfect introduction into the big screen.  We’ll see, but definitely something outside of myself. I don’t want to play a musician. I mean if the dollar’s right, then maybe.

A lot of people know you from your work with Timbaland. Are you recording together in the future?

I miss working with Timbaland. It’s been a minute, to be honest. He’s working on another ‘Shock Value’ album, I think I might have let the cat out the bag, but that’s what he’s doing. I will get back with him very, very, very soon. I just don’t know when.

What’s been the hardest thing you’ve had to overcome in your career?

I had vocal issues and I performed right through them. The world saw this happening, but didn’t know what was happening.  Certain situations you’re put in are to the detriment of your instrument, and a lot of damage was done. Promo days are 12 to 14 hours of talking. That is very damaging. I have no complaints, I’m over it, but it did affect me. I had to take care of it mostly while I was recording ‘No Boys Allowed.’ It’s been the hardest thing, just to fight for my health, fight for my instrument, my gift.

How do you balance that now?

You have to fight. If the word “diva” comes up around my name, it’s because I’m fighting for my voice. It’s because I’m fighting being abused — abuse is such a strong word — but it kind of is what you’re doing to your vocal chords when you’re living the schedule that I live. I’ve had to fight and if I’m called a diva for fighting for myself like no one else will, then I’ll be a diva.

i wish the best for keri. shes had it hard for what she did to bey but i think its time bey stans and ciara stans let it go. i used to love her when she worked with timbo. now she seems a bit cocky and it comes off in her music. she needs to be more humble and really put her writing skills to use like she used too.

Kery hilson, DIVA? That word sure did make all women think they re divas. Well blame the person who promoted that word. smh

  5. ~Bey-utiful Nation~ September 14, 2011

This is a BIG improvement from her previous performances. Good job, Keri!

Sn: I listened to her “Turning Me On” remix. Keri didn’t diss Bey nor Ciara. The media just likes to see 3 beautiful black women in cahoots with each other, and created drama. Nothing more, nothing less..

  16. Jaytuenchi September 14, 2011

I know Rihanna stans are not talking about what voice! Now if that is not the ki of the day. Stans of Rihanna talking about someone else vocal abilities lmao. Moving on to Keri she is a great writer who is trying to break over to pop like Rihanna like i stated on Twitter Keri needs to leave TImb and work with The Dream. He is right up her alley and where she is trying to go he has sent the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce. Ciara should work with Timb

  24. `iLoveYou` September 15, 2011

This performance was better than her last.

  25. VA STAND UP!!! September 15, 2011

The performance was pretty good. She usually gives solid performances, never great, just solid. It’s just AOL Sessions, not an award show or anything so who really cares. *shrugs*

I think its nice that she was honest about her ‘vocal issues’ though its no secret she is not the best vocalist and it seems like she has ‘issues’ with her voice often. When she is sitting down just singing is usually when she sounds the best but when she is doing a performance that requires actual movement is usually when she sounds a mess.

Anywho, ‘No Boys Allowed’ was a GREAT album she just didn’t choose the right singles. You could tell she was going for songs that would do well on the charts rather than choose songs with substance. I think a lot of people thought ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ was to vain and lacked substance and “TWYLM’ just turned everyone off. That song and video was entirely TOO much. Then the record with Breezy just made it look like she was capitalizing off his popularity. Nothing after ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ really stuck. *shrugs*

‘Beatiful Mistake’, ‘All The Boys’, ‘Toy Soldier’ were all beautiful records that could have done well at least on the r&b charts if she had released them. I think it might be too late now she should just move onto her next album which I believe she already has started working on.

I hate to say it but maybe she just wasn’t meant to be a solo star. At least she is a good writer and thats where the money is. *shrugs*

You have got to be f****** kidding me?! A R****** stan having the audacity to come at someone about ‘vocal ability’?!?! Right because Rihanna is a great vocalist right?! When has Rihanna EVER been praised for her vocal ability?! I’ll wait…….

She this is why ya’ll get dubbed the R****** Navy cause ya’ll say the dumbest s*** ever! If you stan for Rihanna you can NEVER come for another artist about vocal ability! EVER! All Rihanna does is SCREAM and SCREATCH on a track! The only thing she ever gets praised for are her LOOKS and wardrobe!

Keri IS a better vocalist than Rihanna and she for damn sure is more talented that forehead too! Unlike Rihanna Keri can actually write her OWN material and songs for others!

Keri may not be the best performer but her and Rihanna are in the same boat when it comes to performing cause all Rihanna does is walk back and forth on stage, screatch and look pretty! Rihanna is lucky she has talented song writers and producers writing all of her s*** for her cause where would she be without them?! I’ll wait…..

You R****** stans really need to get over yourselves and stop attacking artist that actually have more talent than Riyodel!

Now go sit in a corner somewhere!

    @VA STAND UP!!!

u aint never told a lie! PREEEEEEEACH!!!!

  31. Jusitn September 15, 2011

That explains why her performances from the NBA had her vocals so rough and hoarse and in the studio album as well. I’m a singer myself and I easily noticed how her vocals sounded unhealthy on the 2nd album when she used to sound so solid and crisp in her 1st album and her earliest performances.

She may not be a powerhouse vocalist guys but she can obviously sing. Whoever says she can’t is either tone-deaf, cannot sing or has no musical ear and talent at all.

  32. B_STANNING AND LOVING ADELE September 15, 2011

Keri just always rubs me the wrong way. I don’t know why.

  35. nice_gurl September 16, 2011

The performance was pretty good. I hope her next album shows more development and maturity.

  36. naughtybynature September 19, 2011

No Boys Allowed was hot! One of the best albums of last year but I think the wrong singles were released which I don’t believe Keri really has any control over. But Beautiful Mistake, Buyou and All The Boys should have been singles over Breaking Point, Lose Control or even One Night Stand.

Also, her record label doesn’t promote her like they should. Which would make sense since Interscope is all about Gaga right now. She also should branch out from Tim and Polow and I commend her for remaining loyal to them but their sound is too much their sound. She needs her own sound musically. But I don’t know how folks are calling her a flop. Why? Because she’s not jumpin on some rapper’s d*** to make it into superstardom?

She seems to have a lot more integrity than these other broads in the game. Mad respect for her.
