Weigh In: Marsha Ambrosius Moves Mayweather/Cotto Match With National Anthem

Published: Sunday 6th May 2012 by Rashad

Like fellow R&B belter Mary J. Blige, British bred beauty Marsha Ambrosius was on hand yesterday to impart a rendition of the U.S. National Anthem.  While Blige got the race going at the Kentucky Derby, the ‘Far Away‘ singer was far away in Las Vegas opening last night’s highly anticipated Floyd Mayweather/Miguel Cotto fight.

While fans are still chatting about Mayweather’s undefeated streak, Ambrosius’s rendition of the historic number gained its fair share of chat as well.  Did Marsha move the crowd with a knockout take on the anthem?  Find out below:

The singer has certainly gotten her fair share of flack for the performance which all-in-all was really not that bad (definitely not the worst).

Renowned for her signature vibrato, Ambrosius’s vocal skills have won her much praise, but this showing did not.  Like so many talented vocalists before her, however, applying one’s signature self to certain songs (especially anthems) can come with great fan disapproval (see:  Anita Baker, Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Steven Tyler, more).

While having its cringe-worthy parts, what did you guys think of the performance?

Your thoughts?

She was close to pitch perfect. A couple of notes lacked substance and could have been held out longer but she did a good job to me. However, it’s something about her voice whats weird to get used to. It sounds like it breaks or something during her singing. Maybe that’s just her style of singing but once again I think she did well.

she did better than ghetto chicken wraps. Much better!

I’m shocked they had her sing it. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, I just don’t think I’ve see a non-American sing the anthem.

    Horrid

Sorry but when I watched this yesterday I wanted to hide under a rock. It was a mess, she was yodeling to the gods! She looks bloated & I felt embarrassed for her. When someone sings the National Anthem I have very high expectations, she was disappointing.

Personally I think whenever you sing ANY national anthem it should be done strictly according to the original. It’s not the time/place for excessive runs or ad-libs

Mayweather is f****** s***. That is all

  8. Diva May 6, 2012

I didn’t enjoy it at all! Her voice isn’t fit to sing songs like that…

  9. NT May 6, 2012

Uhm she’s not even American to begin with , so obviously she’s going to struggle with a differen’t nations Anthem …

  10. Gerren79 May 6, 2012

NT…. umm I don’t think it matters if she is American or NOT! The Anthem is still a song and she is a singer. So to say she struggled is DUMB! Now if you want to say she did too much in the song… yes..

@NT oh yeah, i though you HAD to be American to sing the National Anthem? Anyway, i used to like Marsha whilst she was in floetry but since then that drowning/choking noise she insists on making is not cute,

It was not that bad. I think anyone can sing the American national anthem. After all she has been putting out music in America since 2002. It was just a gig for her. She sang it the way she sings.

marsha sounded like a chilly goat. if I close my eyes and imagine a goat singing the anthem on a frosty mountaintop or in a refrigerator, it would sound like this performance.

  14. Mr.Geezy May 7, 2012

Marsha has her own style of singing like all singers do and let’s be honest the national anthem is not easy to sing so I give anyone props who makes an attempt. So much respect and love to Marsha.

LMFAO@King Z , I was thinking the same thing! Anyway Marsha NO MA’AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was not as bad as I was expecting once I hit the play button but it wasn’t all that great either. My issue was the incorrect words she used in certain places and the whole time I was thinking RICOLA….LOL!

Miguel Cotto can get it all in the boxing ring dread to hell wit mayweather he is so overrated lololol

Just based on everyone’s comments I’m not going to watch. I just can’t hear that mess. I think she either needs to stay in her range or just stick to song writing. Nothing worse than hearing someone strain to hit the right notes….cough…Alicia Keys…cough. Butterflies (by Michael Jackson) is a MASTERPIECE though.

Sidenote: I don’t want to disrespect Alicia Keys. I think she actually has a very soothing, beautiful voice. Just as long as she sings in her range. When she goes outside of that she is almost unbareable to hear. Sorry Alicia. : /

That wasn’t that bad at all. That is her singing style.
People seem to take issue more with the fact that she’s not American from birth – although she is actually an American citizen.
Clearly some you are some xenophobic m************.

  19. Gem May 7, 2012

She is NOT an american citizen. Both her grandfathers were but she was born and raised in liverpool and london and is still a Brit Cit. And I found nothing wrong with her rendition of the anthem.
