‘You Only Live Once’.
The above phrase, whoever you ask, is just as ‘used’ in the zeitgeist as the ever popular ‘birds of a feather…’ and Biblical ‘do unto others’.
However, upon being featured in the Rap song ‘The Motto’ by Drake, under the acronym ‘YOLO‘, the phrase grew another pair of legs if you will, penetrating contemporary culture in ways we doubt the performer himself could have imagined.
Unfortunately for him, the phrases popularity now sees in the heat of an intense ‘creative’ battle, after a number of retailers began selling ‘YOLO‘ merchandise, without his approval.
Details below…
Though he is not believed to have trademarked the phrase, the ‘Practice’ star took to photo sharing outlet Instagram to ‘call out’ any stores that were capitalizing on his concept, as seen below:
If his remarks are anything to go by, it seems he is after a cut of the profits made from the products’ sales, despite the fact he did not coin the phrase.
Yes, in an interesting twist, KnowYourMeme has credited Adam Mesh of ‘The Average Joe‘ as its real inventor, after he coined it on the NBC Reality show, even going onto launch a ‘YOLO’ clothing line a year later in 2004.
@zoeeeeet When I created the word it was meant as inspiration to live life to the fullest. Disappointed in current use. I have moved on.

umm the strokes made a song called yolo way before Aubrey mentioned it.
He did bring the term to extreme popular use as of the recent year.
But if it was not original he should just be glad it got so big, on his account again!
I think that shirt above how it includes YOLO and “motto” is a direct rip off of his song tho, that should deserve payment unless shirts like that were created long before song was created…?
Drakeisha Girl!!! Shut yo lil Wayne c** hungry ass up, the time you took to be bussin yo p**** wide open for the entire male crew of YMCMB you could of been copyrighting that phrase. Black Girls Still Rock though!!
Who cares tho
SMFH.
But he didn’t even create it.

That fact that they took put the words YOLO and Motto on the same T shirt means they meant to profit off Drake’s version of it. Its only common sense.

LOOOOL . He said a few words, they became extremely popular and now he wants to CLAIM them. ! How petty is that. The guy earns millions from album sales and sold out shows and appearances. What more do you want?? Drake, that was a b**** move. You need to know when to pick your fights. This is not the one.
And if u didn’t trademark it, there’s no argument.
Ugh! Drakeena please, you were not the first to say or come up with it, so sit your belligerent greedy ass down.
