Beyonce has long been an advocate for equality and justice. A trajectory that continued today when she used the enormity of her platform to condemn the shocking killing of innocent protestors by officials in Nigeria.

The star also shared that she and her BeyGood charity had already been working directly with entities in on the ground in Lagos to end the terror caused by controversial police division, SARS.

Still, despite her efforts, select corners have been critiquing the singer’s every word, move, and more.

Well, her Mom Tina Knowles Lawson is having none of it.

Taking to Instagram, she shared a lengthy and impassioned message for her daughter’s detractors. See what she had to say below…

‘Queen & Slim’ has been resonating with audiences worldwide, thanks largely to its powerful performances and incredible storytelling of the Black experience.

Ahead of the film’s UK release, That Grape Juice sat down with the title’s writer and director – Lena Waithe and Melina Matsoukas – to discuss its importance and much more.

During the candid conversation, the pair also opened up about the Oscars controversy that saw no female directors nominated.

Matsoukas also discussed working with “sister for life” Beyonce.

Today’s leading female Pop stars, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, are no strangers to facing off in the music realm as they’ve seen their works go head-to-head at MTV’s Video Music Awards, the Grammy’s, American Music Awards, and more over the years.

However, January 5th brought with it the opportunity for their respective contributions to films to compete.

As we reported here, both singers were nominated in the 2020 Golden Globes’ ‘Best Original Song’ category for original tunes they created for feline-inspired, reimagined projects.  Bey’s critically acclaimed ‘Spirit’  (for Disney’s 2019 live action remake of ‘Lion King’) joined Swift’s ‘Beautiful Ghosts’ (for the 2019 movie adaptation of the classic Broadway tale, ‘Cats’) as nominees in the category.

As their respective fan groups waited with bated breath to see which of the divas would walk away with the prized trophy, they were both stunned to learn it was the legendary Elton John‘s ‘Rocketman’ tune that soared to the gold.

Taylor Swift may be riding quite the wave of late with her ‘Lover’ album campaign and more, but the praise isn’t ubiquitous.

Because, despite her ‘CATS’ cut ‘Beautiful Ghosts’ nabbing a nomination for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, it has been notably left off the shortlist for the upcoming Oscars.

Despite garnering a whopping 16 nominations at the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this year, Ava DuVernay‘s Netflix miniseries – ‘When They See Us’ – received no recognition from The Hollywood Foreign Press Association when the organization announced the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes on Monday (December 9).

The film, which tells the true story of five African American teens wrongfully convicted of the rape and assault of a jogger in New York’s Central Park in the late 80’s, was lauded by viewers and critics alike for its gripping content and outstanding acting. Now, thanks to the apparently none-too-impressed Golden Globes committee’s omission of the title from their list of nods, many are taking to social media to express their disappointment for its absence and the overall lack of racial diversity among this year’s class of nominees.

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll fast backward to Maxwell’s (born Gerald Rivera) 1999 hit ‘Fortunate.’  Found aboard the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence-led film ‘Life,’ the neo-soul jam – penned and produced by R. Kelly – was initially rejected by Rivera before Kelly convinced him to record it instead of the title track to the film’s soundtrack (a tune later made a hit by K-Ci & Jojo).

Released in March of that year, the tune eventually peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 (where it was found this week that year).  Unknown to the crooner at the time, ‘Fortunate’ not only went on to be the Hot 100 peak of his career but also the biggest hit of his career with sales that currently hover slightly under the Platinum mark.  Going on to become a fan favorite amongst his many unforgettable R&B gems, look inside to relieve the magic of ‘Fortunate’ and see who joined him in the Hot 100 this week 19 years ago:

Brandy‘s career may have stalled and been stifled by poorly executed moves in recent years, but that’s done all of nothing to shake her status as one of Pop’s greatest success stories.

Leading the way for the likes of then-teenagers Beyonce and Britney Spears in the 90s, the vocalist’s unmatched success on stage and screen during the period saw her harvest a fan base which has unknowingly turned her into a streaming magnet as her ability to pick up pure sales falters.
