Now that her feud with Nicki Minaj has been put to rest, Rap punchline Lil Kim has seen her brand come under fire from a number of directions in recent months.

Last month, she was billed as ‘a shadow of her former self’ by ‘212’ genius Azealia Banks and last Christmas, she found herself in hot water when a former ghostwriter exposed contracts between the pair.

This, confirming age old reports that she does not pen her own material.

Today, ‘My Neck/My Back’ MC Khia has launched an attack on the former star, mocking her alleged addiction to cosmetic surgery and her ‘ghostwritten’ material.

Her debut album may be months away and a US #1 still out of her reach, but it’s safe to say Rita Ora is the breakout act of 2012.

Rising from the streets of West London to become Jay Z‘s latest protegee, Ora’s time on the shelf- 5 years to be exact- has undoubtedly been worth the wait.

For, one week after scoring her 2nd UK #1 single, she has landed a nomination at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.

In many ways, Nicki Minaj is to female Rap what  Amy Winehouse was to British music.

From the buzz she garnered between’08-2010 to the well endowed commercial effort that was her debut LP, her success has led to a rise in the number of Femcees scoring major recording contracts, putting the oft overlooked sect back on the musical map.

So, with the likes of Lil Kim, Charli Baltimore, Missy Elliott and Da Brat readying long awaited come back albums, and Iggy Azalea, Kreayshawn, Paris and  Azealia Banks gearing up to release their debuts, we want to know:

Could 2012 be the year of the female Rapper?

And if so, which one are you  most excited about?

This week, From The Vault journey’s back to the 90’s with a Pop-Culture classic, the divas showdown which saw Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue ask ‘Whatta Man’.

One of the biggest hits of  1994, as well as a highlight in both the groups’ respective careers, ‘Man’ was a Top 10 smash both in the US and the UK.

Directed by Matthew Rolston, the song’s accompanying video is gutsy and bodacious. To put it bluntly, the ladies shut it down.

Rightfully so, such brilliance was rewarded with a MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography courtesy of the Frank Gaston. (Sidenote: En Vogue still stand as the female group with the most VMA wins to this day).

With femcees popping up left and right as of late (see: Nicki Minaj, Kreyshawn, Azealia Banks), we can’t help but think now would be the aptest of times for another Hip-Hop female collective to build on what Salt-N-Pepa achieved.

As for En Vogue, we hear the Funky Divas are cooking up a new album. Yet, once again, Dawn Robinson has struck herself out of the equation (citing a wack contract). Sad, as having seen the ladies live recently, they still have “it” in abundance. Such a shame.

Your thoughts?
