The 90s R&B teen scene was already well occupied by the Brandys and Monicas of the world by the time then-18-year-old Mya came into play.  Sporting a soft soprano and street savvy dance moves, fans were introduced to what looked like Aaliyah’s distant R&B cousin.  However, time would prove Ms. Harrison to be more than a spinoff.

With her debut single boldly professing ‘It’s All About Me’ with fellow diva-in-training Sisqo, Mya blasted onto charts with a slew of R&B top 10 hits.  Then after her 2000 sophomore smash ‘Fear Of Flying’ soared up charts and yielded her signature #1 hit ‘Case of the Ex’, the ‘Movin’ On’ songbird was quickly moving into becoming a formidable force across multiple genre tallies – still following Aaliyah’s archetype of harmonizing with hip hop hitmakers (see: Jay Z, Jadakiss).  But, it would be her enlistment on 2001’s remake of ‘Lady Marmalade’ featuring then-rising Pop starlets Christina Aguilera, Pink and Rap queen Lil’ Kim that cemented the R&B star’s view on the Pop telescope.

And while the song’s tenure on charts did raise ‘Mya awareness’ in other arenas, it ushered in a dilemma as well.  Could she follow-up the joint effort with her own solo success?  The subsequent ‘Mizzaundastood’ and ‘Stripped’ eras of Pink and Christina‘s respective careers may have lifted them to new heights, but Mya’s ‘MoodRing’ failed to strike a similar chord with fans.  Its respectable chart entry and ‘My Love Is Like Whoa’ intro set it on the ground running initially, but just a few weeks later it had ‘fallen’ off charts faster than its second single – struggling to secure Gold status.

After a brief hiatus, the songstress returned with the Lil’ Wayne-assisted ‘Lock U Down’ from her fourth album ‘Liberation’ – which freely fell into obscurity.  This Japan-only release, followed by other albums of similar suiting, all indicated that Mya had lost her footing on US Pop charts.

So what’s the problem? Her sheer talent has kept her in mention with today’s top Urban divas, while movie and talent show appearances have, to some degree, kept her ‘celebrity’ alive.  But what we want to know is: were her previous chart shortcomings marketing mishaps or musical missteps?

You weigh in.  Product vs. promotion:  Have we seen the best of the ‘Best of Me’ songstress?  Or will the right product and/or promotion bring Mya back?

In support of her forthcoming studio release, ‘The High Road’ songstress Jojo is wowing fans and critics alike on the road and documenting every step of her tour chronicles via her Youtube vlog. The new album ‘Jumping Trains’ (led by ‘Disaster’), which she describes as ‘pop with anger management problems’, is expected on record shelves in early 2012.

Joined on a nationwide trek with fellow pop performers Joe Jonas and Jay Sean, the singer’s most recent recorded pit stops were on the west coast.

And, with parts 1 through 8 already boasting quite the buzz, fans are now invited to join Jojo once again as her travels take her through California on parts 9 and 10 after the jump:

Adele‘s reign atop global charts since her critically and commercially acclaimed ’21’ was released has seen the ‘Rolling In the Deep’ songstress roll in impressive accolades.

However, the gain and consequent maintenance of such success is seemingly coming with a price.  For, not too long after resuming her postponed trek due to vocal damage and fatigue, the British beauty has been forced to curtail her tour plans yet again due to the recurring condition.

Mary J. Blige appears queenly regal on the HQ cover for her hotly anticipated ‘My Life II’ LP. Apt as the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul is set to do battle with the Queen of the Singles Chart – Rihanna come the album’s release on November 21st.

Indeed, ‘Life’ goes head-to-head with the nasal sensation’s latest effort ‘Talk That Talk’ – a move many industry analysts believe will deny RiRi the ever-elusive #1 debut for the 6th consecutive time.

Still, in being the fair and unbias site we are, it’s important to point out the relative success of Talk’s lead single ‘We Found Love’ – success which has, thus far, escaped all of Blige’s releases this go round. What’s more, the 23 year old’s effort is inevitably set to be backed by a mammoth marketing push; one which Blige – at this point in her career – can’t command.

Still, with the masses often needing to be force-fed Fenty’s material before buying into it, and Mary J. being able to scan at least 300,000 first week with ease, it’s Ms.J’s battle to lose.

Your thoughts?

To undermine Christina Aguilera‘s vocal ability, would be akin to comparing Rihanna’s to Mariah’s.

However, as the years have gone on (taking her relevancy with it), it’s quickly become apparent that years of bad technique have shaved away some of the intricate qualities of a voice we’ve known and loved for the better part of 12 years.

Yet, as the age old adage goes: it’s not over, till it’s over. A fact Aguilera’s popularity on NBC’s ‘The Voice‘ and recent chart-topping success with Maroon 5 proves.

As such, capitalising on her rediscovered relevance, the 30 year old is back in the studio recording what essentially needs to be the comeback of comebacks. So as to ensure she’s in tip-top form, it is being reported the mother of one has enlisted the services of a new vocal coach.
