BAPS-THAT-GRAPE-JUICE-2016

Welcome to another edition of ‘Retro Rewind‘, the TGJ original feature launched to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past.

Today, our journey takes us to 1997. Our destination? ‘B*A*P*S’, the New Line Cinema movie starring Halle Berry.

The movie tells the tale of two young women who become ‘Black American Princesses’ after auditioning for a music video in Los Angeles to raise money for the hair salon/soul food spot they hope to create.

It isn’t long before their trip to the West Coast sees them thrown into a sinister plot to milk a millionaire’s fortune.

Unfortunately, it failed to recoup its 10 million dollar budget after its release (it picked up $7,338,229) but, as many will agree, worked wonders for Berry’s diverse filmography.

Fifth Harmony‘s brand new cut ‘Work From Home’ is doing just that on the British charts.

Released to support the Urban Pop group’s second studio set, the single (which features the rapper Ty Dolla $ign) has impacted the Official Singles Chart‘s Top Five…without physical promotion from the ladies in the competitive market.

The sizzling number sits at #4 thanks to its heavily-rotated visual (inspired by Ciara’s ‘Work’?) pushed it 11 spots away from the #15 position it held last week, and arrived there after the ladies learned that their music has spent 12 weeks in the U.K’s Top Ten.

They aren’t the only noteworthy artists on the tally this week. For, despite dropping two places, Rihanna’s ‘Work‘ holds its Top Five spot following the launch of her new world tour.

The single, which features the rapper Drake, was released to push her new LP ‘ANTI‘ which is expected to move just over 9,000 units in the U.S. this week.

Iggy Azalea asserts on her hot new single that the only person she needs on her ‘TEAM’ is herself.

However, in putting the braggadocios-ness to the side, the rapper is opening up about the team that helped steer her away from the suicidal thoughts that threatened to end her life.

It’s well documented how “in” it was to drag “Iggy Azalea” deep down to the trenches in the wake of her social media showdown’s with fellow artists and the racial tensions that surrounded her ethnicity.

And while the Australian has proven herself quick to clap back (or at least try), she has remained relatively mum about the private turmoil she endured behind the scenes.

That silence was shattered today in an interview with Power 106 in Los Angeles. Watch as Ms. I-GG-Y tells her truth below..

Nicki Minaj‘s third studio set ‘The Pinkprint’ may sit 15th months away from its December 2014 release but its run on a commercial front is far from over.

Trey Songz‘ forthcoming LP will see him venture into new musical territory with hopes of reaching his full potential as a commercial and critical act.

How he’s kicking off his new and improved era? By covering the late David Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars?’ for HBO‘s ‘Vinyl.’

He shared:

When I was approached last summer by the producers of ‘Vinyl,’ the first thing I thought was, ‘Damn that’s a David Bowie song. I was honored that the producers thought of such a legend and myself in the same breath. I had to do what I do best, because icons like David paved the way. After learning of his passing I knew that this was a special moment in time and this cover became my personal tribute to David. Experiences like this have helped to shape my future and respect the past of others before me. This has become a very special moment in my career and I am blessed and grateful to be apart!

Exciting times.

Give it a listen below…
