Many of Hip-Hop’s heavyweight have been praising Nicki Minaj in recent months for being one of the flagship players in the revival of the genre. Among the extensive list of names is Irv Gotti who compared the ‘Massive Attack’ rapper to the legendary Lauryn Hill.
Minaj has generally remained quiet about such recognition but now she is speaking out, suggesting that Gotti was correct for comparing her to Hill. Peep what she had to say below:
Often the truth in Minaj’s career is trumped by the rampant rumors swirling around her love life, sexuality and lofty comparisons. Kanye West has said she has the potential to be second-greatest rapper of all time, next to Eminem. Irv Gotti has compared her to Lauryn Hill.
In regards to the latter, Minaj isn’t as humble as one might expect.
“Irv has been privy to hear things that I’ve done that the world hasn’t heard,” she says. “Based on the music I have out now, that sounds like an absurd comment, but when ‘Pink Friday’ comes out, you will completely understand why Irv made that comparison.” {Source}
Although it is true that we still may not have heard the best that Minaj has had to offer, it is still hard to believe that she is even mentioned in the same sentence as Hill without the words “will never be” sandwiched included in the middle. Minaj has never sung on any track without the assistance of thick auto-tuning and only manages to spit a solid verse when featured on another artist’s track.
Hill is without a doubt one of the best rappers/singers/songwriters to emerge in the game. When Minaj drops a verse as tight as Hill’s on ‘The Mask’ or sings a capella like Hill did on ‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’ let me know.

She is talented, and I like her – but she’s more LIL KIM then LAURYN HILL.
This is hype, but it remains to be seen what her MESSAGE is on the album. This is where I imagine comparisons will stand or fall – not in vocal ability.
Lauryn was probably the last cross-over pop star to actually deliver a MESSAGE in her music – and not sing about money, ego, mattresses, clothes, etc. The state of mainstream R&B, RAP is quite simply a COMPLETE joke right now.
The music itself is evolving, but the messages and lyrics are turning into some sexed up ORWELLIAN nightmare.

Anything for album sales. Of course [some] folks are gonna rush to buy “Pink Friday” now, just to see if she’s right. Personally, I think the album title alone says that Nicki & Irv Gotti are both fullashit. Maybe I’m judging a book by it’s cover, but I’m content with that. I don’t see it.

@MIA thank you. Why is this such a big deal? She never said she was BETTER than Lauryn she said she can see why IrV made the comparisons, because he heard things we havent. Until we hear, we can’t say if its true or not. You would think she did what Remy Ma di and compared herself fto Jesus Christ which was a big nope in my eyes.
Nicki Minaj came up in a way that Lauryn didn’t. She grinded as a mixtape artist, built a fan base off of mixtapes. That shit is a grind. Some of you should try it. You do have to earn respect and I respect her hustle and grind. We will have to wait to see what her CD offers and if she lives up to the comparisons. Why must we tear her down for a simple statement we don’t even know the answer to yet. All this hating for no reason making me want to root for her hard. I love rooting for an underdog.

She is nowhere now and thats the truth shes look rough as hell and she aint got no “masterpiece out”" She on drugs and ran out of creativiity so therefore she was never consistent with nothing. I respect so much an artist that throughout the years continues to be relevant.
