While the clip aesthetically captured the vibe of the song well, it was ultimately let down by Rihanna’s many handicaps as a performer. For all the lighting, editing, and even authentic Caribbean backdrop, couldn’t hide the fact the 23 year old lacks any vitality. Indeed, instead of a bogle, butterfly, or dutty whine, Ms. Fenty did little else than pose, walk and sit during the gloomy clip. Making a potentially solid video, yet another one of her many mediocre offerings Moreover, proving yet again why the Beyonce‘s and Lady GaGa‘s of this world are simply on higher ground.

Rihanna walked around the Island, having fun with the people who lived there. Cute, hugging kids, and kissing elders, Cute. She rode a bike and went to a party. Cute. Then apparently Got R**** or Mistreated, (however you took it), then got mad and shot the dude. WTF Does this have to do with the lyrics of the song…..I feel Rihanna is so ghetto when she makes videos, their always half-assed. She looks Pretty, YES, WE KNOW. After Years of watching her, We know she’s gorgeous. But what other Talent does she have, the Whiney voice and constant Model poses wasnt doin it for me with this video. And People say Rihanna is Better than Beyonce???? ARE YOU F****** SERIOUS. Beyonce kills Rihanna vocally and dancing wise. Omg the Delusional Stans, To me everything she does caturs to Superficiality. This will not hurt Chris especially in the urban area, I think most of the urban fans has moved on from 2009 incident but there still some urban fans living in the past. Its the mainstream fans that is still dwelling on the 2009 incident. The urban fans love Chris, so it won’t hurt him at all. I just think she always make her videos interesting and keep people talking. This is my first time ever commenting on a Rihanna post. I am not a Rihanna fan. I’m not even a supporter. Don’t own a single album; but when I read the synopsis for this video it actually peaked my interest, so I watched, and I must say, I liked it. It told a story, which is what videos USED to do before music became the shallow mess that it is now. Never would I have thought that Rihanna of all people would give me a sense of nostalgia with this clip, but she did and I appreciate that. I also think that this style of music (reggae/island) suits her voice well. Rihanna is by no means a premier vocalist; but I can almost appreciate her voice as long as she’s not trying to do the wrong things with it (ie: hit power house notes, run, rift, growl,vibrato, you know all the things real singers do). The video did not call for a dance break. It simply painted us a picture of the song and in my opinion it was the perfect picture. I even appreciated her subtle but effective acting. the “Man Down” video was a good watch.

Not every artist has to dance or pop their ass like Beyonce. She is not the staple artist, nor GaGa. Rihanna has claimed her right as an individualistic artist. This video has captured the essence of the song in a way that no one expected. It’s so easy to make a Dance video to this, but why? I’m glad Rihanna didn’t take that route. This video proves her as an everlasting artist. There is meaning in this song and this video, unlike Run the World. And the message is clear, unlike Judas and Born This Way, in which you have to think about for hours before it makes any sense. So please take that Beyonce and GaGa stuff somewhere else.
