It was an all-legends affair at Prince‘s Los Angeles show last night. The purple one was joined at The Forum by not only Chaka Khan, but the legendary Whitney Houston.
Leaving the spotlight to the ladies, the 52 year old assumed bass duties while Houston and Khan sang that latter’s classic ‘Tell Me Something Good’.
All the action after the jump…
In the words of Houston herself, I guess her soprano never showed up that night. And by the sounds of it, neither did much else of her voice.
As much as we vouch for her, this really was one of those collaborations which looked better (and ultimately should have stayed) on paper. For, despite Whitney’s ‘new’ voice actually having shreds of potential, its biggest downside is its lack of consistency. This, clearly, being one of its many ‘off’ night’s.
Still, Houston fans have plenty to look forward to, most notable being her reprisal of the role of Savannah in ‘Waiting to Exhale’ sequel ‘Getting To Happy’. The big-budget flick begins production later this year.

I love Whitney & am always defending her, but performances like this make it hard. he can still sing yes, but 98% of her performances are bad, idk. VERY INCONSISENT. sometimes i think the focus is all off…shouldn’t we just revel in the fact that little by little whitney seems to be returning to the joy she once seemed to have when it comes to singing…given that the word on the curb a few years ago was that chaka and whitney were not speaking to one another, this clip is only positive. first you reappear, then you make amends, and then slowly but surely whitney will find her “voice” again. the voice we came to love took decades to make, and I imagine it will take some years to bring it back….p.s. like all great vocalist of our times even on her worst day whitney is head and shoulders above the rest! in the words of mariah “try it on me!!”

Yeah, her voice wasn’t really appealing. Mind you it wasn’t horrible, but it def didn’t do anything for me. It did sound better on paper, & I think that’s a collab at this state she should’ve stayed away. Chaka is a vocal BEAST! She has no problem hittin though higher chest notes & with such precision. Whitney on the other hand has inconsistent vocals to for one handle this song at this point, & to do a collab with someone of Chaka’s vocal stature. But, as Kev said, she still has enormous talent, & she still is in history as “The Voice.” & I honestly think she should rest her voice for a year or 2, go to the doctor & see if they can do some procedure to lift the strain off her vocal chords or whatever, then get some vocal training. She doesn’t have to be in the vocal form of back in the days, but have some consistent vocal range. Regardless people like Rihanna & Lady Gaga don’t compare to Whitney on any level, so just stop.

I’m glad Whitney is doing some acting again. As for singing, I think after her last album she should “bow out” gracefully. She has a long history of hits and her Arista catalog has more than enough unreleased material to release a final greatest hits package with a bonus disk of unreleased songs. She should not embarass herself by continuing to perform with a voice that is not in its best shape. I agree with a couple comments above where she needs to stop smoking newports. She should try the stop-smoking patches and drink water and tea. Then get a vocal coach to help her voice regain some of what is no longer has.

Was at the show and Whitney’s voice was fine. As the video shows the crowd was loving her everyt time she gave us one of those heavy belts which she did quite a bit of. It really is something that needs to be heard in person. The power is amazing. Chaka was actually a little disapointing only hitting that same note over oand over again which in the stadium sounded like a scream. Interesting that a press member (is that what this is) would actually not suppport what went down. Surprised at this bandwagon jumping.
