Diva. A word, much like ‘flop’, ‘epic’, and ‘underrated’, that has, in years of late, seen itself overused and overextended to any chick who ever owned an ounce of relevancy. But, before it was a household term, there were a select few who denoted ‘diva’ effortlessly, helping to turn the term into the epitome of estrogenic swag that it is today. And while every genre has its set of leading ladies, there are some whose range defied limits – unable to be captured by any musical mode. In such, they captured the hearts of legions of fans and earned the title ‘diva’ by merit and not self-christening.
The divine 9 (plus 1…) – Aretha, Celine, Diana, Janet, Madonna, Mariah, Patti, Tina, and Whitney need no introduction. By mention of mononym alone, these musical monarchs inspire applause. So, in one of our most epic showdowns yet, we turn to you – That Grape Juice faithful – to tell us who dominates the diva domain?
In areas of performance, fashion, and overall influence, cast your vote for the ultimate as the Pop elite faceoff after the jump. They paved the way and set the bar for the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and more to glide their heels across, but they’re still the few your faves are still trying to be…
*Polls Closed*
Voting ends Sunday, January 15 at 11pm CST. So, sound off! Who’s the ultimate diva?

Finally a story about the real definition of DIVA! All nominees fit the category to a T! All except maaaaaaybe Madonna. I think to me Diva for the most part stands for a female singer with a big voice! In terms of attitude though, yes Madonna is a diva. The clear winner here is Mariah Carey. She has STILL got it, her endorsements like perfumes etc have proven to be very successful. She was critically acclaimed for her role on Precious. Glitter has since long been forgotten! Musically, she is miles ahead of any other on this list. U may say a lot of things about Mariah Carey but no one will ever be able to take away that voice! Her catalogue is what stands the test of time and continues to make her relevent. Obsessed has been certified Platinum and it was her 1st single from her last Studio album. U can’t deny this woman his music pouring out of her soul! This is why Mariah Carey is the ULTIMATE DIVA!

My money is on Whitney Houston she gives me all i need- great voice great music.
I love Celine n Janet too. I used to have their cds on repeat. Stil play em
Mariah is too sugary for me
Madonna is pop culture built on facade. She b doin d most to stay relevant
I dont like Patti’s voice or Aretha’s that much for that matter. Yea i said it
Tina! Now thats a performer but im not too familiar w/ her discography same applies to Cher. I find Cher tacky though
Diana Ross, my mama loves her and i love my momma

Ugh, it was really hard, between Janet, Aretha, Mariah, and Diana, but overall 2 between is Janet and Diana, because Janet emulates Diana to a tee!!! Diana is the original diva- The Surpremes!!! Diana was the one who discovered The Jacksons and put them on her tv show in the 60′s. Diana live performance wise is legendary, Marvin Gaye before his death and Lionel Richie songs with Diana were very huge hits of the decade. So I say Ms. Diana Ross, also she’s my idol next to Janet, Mariah, Aretha, and Whitney.

Live performer…Janet (no contest)
Disography…Mariah (best selling)
Biggest hit…Whitney (biggest single by far)
Multidimensional….Cher (biggest movie star and TV star)
Fashion…Madonna (Diana and Cher were huge but kids dressed like Madonna)
Still Got It…Celine (most consistent)
Influence…Aretha (The Queen of Soul)
Tough field, but Patti doesn’t really belong.

Whitney. She had the class, voice, beauty, songs, style and original talent. Gimmick-free performances devoid of sex and crude references to fame and wealth. She’s still associated with class alone, when people say , “Whitney” one is automatically made to think about the voice, the class and the reputation. No vocalist commands her respect for what she achieved Everyone else, probably bar Celine & Aretha have had to use sex to sell their music.
Whitney also is the only one who’s music has been relevant to EVERYBODY! Most artist stay in the Pop, Adult Contemporary or RnB circles but Whitney did Pop, Soul, New Jack Swing, Gospel and Adult Contemporary all very well and those works were acclaimed! Her awards speak for themselves but let’s not overlook she is well loved by the US public hence her 22 American Music Awards which are voted for by fans, only Michael Jackson has more.
Ever since she did Bodyguard every female singer has also aspired to not only act but have a massive impact such as I Will Always Love You and it’s 2 Oscar nominated songs, “Run to You” and “I Have Nothing”.
That’s my thoughts!!!

Whitney is the most awarded female artist in the world according to Guiness World records. She has influenced the MTV generation and made BET a household name with her vids in late 80′s early 90′s together with MJ. It’s known Madonna cant sing; however she has written most of her songs. Mariah Carey suffers from the Cinderella complex which rears it’s fugly head more and more these last few years of her has-been career. She spawned the new generation of lip syncing followed by Beyonce and the like. Aretha is very self-centred and self-appoints herself as Queen of soul – very conceited, arrogant in real life. Can’t say much for the rest, smh.

Pls do your research, Whitney Houston is not the only one who’s had her music influenced by everydbody. Mariah has had her music delivered to a way more broader audience then WHitney. Mariah has reached the masses all the from Adult Contemporary to Hip-hop, remember Fantasy with ODB? CLASSIC! I dont recall Whitney being on any hip-hop charts so try again! MARIAH wins hands down!

This is too hard…But i’m have to go with Whitney as the Ultimate Diva…for now, because in about five more years Beyonce will be the Greatest Diva of all time, She Just needs to sell more records, I mean none of the Old Grand Diva’s match her live entertainment status…But Whitney is the voice! Aretha started it all…Diana has the attitude and flare….Patti is the most underated…Mariah probably has the most sales because she can easily cross over and is the most unique…Cher is the most multidimensional (amazing recording career, tv variety show, and a freaking oscar winner!) Tina is the best overall entertainer out of the Divine 9…And Celine is probably the most consistent out of them all! Janet and Madonna are amazing but i see them more as the original Queens of pop versus being Diva’s because there vocals are none existent…I think Janet is the most emulated performance wise because she is Britney’s Biggest influence and Britney redifined pop and Beyonce is most influenced by Michael but Janet was a littlle-less talented version of Michael..Madonna is most emulated image and career wise because she did so much with so little which is Rihanna’s mantra and we all know the whole thing with Gaga and Madonna…

In all fairness I had to take off the stan hat and vote as objectively as I could. These people got my vote:
Best Live Performer – Hands down Whitney & Janet (voted twice)
OverAll Catalog – Mariah (it was a 3 – way tie for me, but I gave Mimi this one)
Biggest Hit – Whitney I will always Love You, handsdown!
MultiDimensional Diva – Diana Ross (hard one)
Fashion – Janet , ALL DAY!
Still Got It – Janet , Period!
Influence – Madonna (2 way tie though)

Though this is a hard one, WHITNEY takes it HANDS DOWN. In the 80s and into the 90s, she had the same effect on culture/pop culture as Michael Jackson. A black artist that was able to cross over and break through racial barriers with her music. I think SHE is the one who paved the way for the likes of Mariah, Beyoncé, and even Rihanna (hate to say)…. Her voice, beauty, class, and discography are matched by no other.

Whitney Houston is my pick for ultimate diva and Aretha is the ultimate queen. Record sales, awards, movies etc are great and all but no one can top these women solely.based on singing ability. Whitney.not only could sing but she also has a charming persona. Bodyguard would not have been.successful without.her. who else has the top selling soundtrack of all time. And aretha still shuts it down.

Live performer…Janet has the Dance but Madonna has the Circus
Disography…Madonna (she has the best Musical catalogue of these Divas)
Biggest hit…Madonna (take a look to “Hung Up” is on the Guinness Book Records)
Multidimensional..Cher (she has been successful in Movies, Music,TV, ect)
Fashion…Madonna (she has the most Iconic looks (still copied today)
Still Got It….so far i think Madonna has been the most constant of all Divas.
Influence…is hard but i think is Whitney but not everybody has her voice so their go for Madonna or Janet, so far i think Madonna and Janet are the most infuential bitches in the game.

Janet has choreography in the bag, hands down.
As for voice-Toss up between Mariah and Whitney
Cher,Aretha, and Diana also had a big influence on music as well.

you mother f******* underestimate Aretha, Diana and Tina turner!!!! and where is Etta and chaka (the both have classic hits and Etta is considered to be a legend!)
Best Live Performer – Aretha (no one has a vocal period!!!!! that include whitney and Mariah, btw screaming on top of their lungs does not make you a great singer!!!),
OverAll Catalog – Tina turner (the woman beyonce tries to be) can sing and dance like no other (unlike Janet Jackson)
Biggest Hit – whitney: there is nothing!
MultiDimensional Diva – Diana Ross!!! say no more
Fashion – Tina Turner (her outfit was crazy back then and as young person i love it!) and Madonna
Still Got It – Aretha (she still blows Mariah and Whitney out of the water! she is the queen of soul!!!), Tina turner still gives amazing performances at age 70!!!!!!, Etta (currently on her deathbed) blows whitney and mariah. whitney and mariah are so stupid, they lost their voice! why because they scream in every song!
Influence – Diana Ross, Madonna, Etta, Aretha (etta and Aretha paved the way for whitney and Mariah but still able to sing their asses off!
I love mariah and whitney but they have nothing on aretha and Etta both are soulful and vocal are beautiful! we will never see them perform like Etta and Aretha during their old age, they fucked up and had no technical control over their vocal!

Anyway, the winner is JANET DAMITA JO JACKSON…she is the MOST DIVERSE of all the ladies on the list. She doesn’t have the biggest voice but she has one of the most versatile voices because she can do pop, R&B, rock, even a lil rap. And, other than Whitney, she has the fewest number of cds out of all the women and has sold more than most of them on the list.

And you know what i’m not even going too shade Ri or any of the girls anymore, i have turned over a new leaf, i will only give my direct and honest opinion without being messy (specifically to Rihanna). Diana is the ultimate Diva being she is a Motown classic and example of what girl groups and being successful solo as likes of Beyonce’ has experienced. Her influence on other icons like Michael Jackson, Destinys Child, Amy Winehouse, and music has been Incomparable. Janet Jackson influence is undeniably Great! Ciara, Beyonce’, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and many more have attempted to make their influence just as hers because she was one of the first female artist to be in the mainstream worldwide with her videos and talent. Janet’s credit may not be given to her only because she is still active in her career and is the sister of Michael Jackson. They both are icons and have in my opinion showed what a hug superstar means to be and is. Aretha Franklin is an icon, Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Whitney, Mariah, MARY j. madonna is for sure, Celine all in their own unique way. Each of the artist are unique in their own way and can never be matched. Cher is one that i think wanted women to be sexy and wear long ear with make-up. She is a icon when it came to Fashion. Live Janet Jackson had it and still has it!! Beyonce’ is in, MAdonna, Patti, Chaka, & Tina can still perform and compete in a lane of their own.

The word “diva” refers to a vocal.artist of exceptional and superior VOCAL ability, charismatic and magnetic personality, incredible stage persona, huge musicianship, etc.
The word diva means GODDESS, and it’s related to the term prima donna (first woman) which is not only a star but the main INSTRUMENT of the musical ensemble.
In the operatic world the ultimate diva is Maria Callas, a diva with an enormeous range, agility and power which enabled her to sing anything from contralto to high coloratura soprano.
In the jazz era the ultimate diva is Ella Fitzgerald, a consumate musician and vocalist with a prodigious 3 octave range.
In the 60′s and 70′s the main divas were Barbra and Aretha, both incredible vocalists.
In the 80′s the voice that best describes a true diva was Whitney Houston; power, range, beauty.
In the 90′s was Mariah Carey; range, agility, musicianship. And in the new millenium the only one deserving of being called diva in the english speaking world based on vocals and stage persona is Beyonce.

@MRDIVABITCH
In the jazz era the ultimate diva is Ella Fitzgerald, a consumate musician and vocalist with a prodigious 3 octave range.
In the 60′s and 70′s the main divas were Barbra and Aretha, both incredible vocalists.

@Licari, Mariah was NOT the first artist to mix POP/R&B and Rap…that belongs to Chaka Khan really with her single I Feel For You and Janet Jackson made it more popular with a mainstream artist with Heavy D featured on her single Alright. Mariah has done some AMAZING things, but that just isn’t one of them.

Sorry its between Madonna, Janet & Mariah. MJM. Tina Tuner is a close 4th. However it all comes down to Madge N Janet. They’re the biggest divas ever. Today and yesterday. Their tours, influence in pop culture, and music has changed the course of music foever. It will soon become MJB. Madge for exposure, Janet for dancing, Bey for singing.

Celine is much better singer than Mariah and can literally sing her out the building. And Whitney is the one who both emulated. Tommy Motolla created “Mariah Carey” as his answer to Clive and Whitney. I see nothing “special” about Mariah honestly. She’s as manufactured as Britney. And of all these ladies, Mariah is the weakest live performer.
The ultimate diva though is probably a tie between Aretha and Whitney.

Aretha, Diana, Patti, Tina, and Cher originated the term diva.Madonna Janet, Whitney, Mariah, and Celine took diva to the next level
60′s- Tina, Diana
70′s Patti, Cher
80′s-Madonna, Whitney
90′s-Mariah, Janet, Celine
But for me my diva is Mimi regardless of how put this she has pop, AC, Gospel Hip hop R&B elements in her music and even now she hasn’t sold a billion records recently she is still ruling soundscan among females after 2decades and her christmas album (94) is still going mad w/ AIWFC. But all these ladies are deserving. I love her diva antics and she has talent as a writer and her talent can’t be denied as the rest of the ladies.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, AND AS MUCH AS I RIDE HER, WHITNEY HOUSTON IS THE ULTIMATE! NO ONE WANTS TO SING LIKE THE OTHERS MORE THAN THEY DO WHITNEY, AND ONLY ONE (DIANA) RIVALS WHITNEY’S STAGE PRESENCE. SHE SPAWNED AT LEAST TWO GENERATIONS OF IMITATORS AT THIS POINT. EVEN IF HER COOCH SMELLS LIKE AN ASHTRAY, SHE IS STILL THE FIERCEST OF THEM ALL. @ PERSIAN, DO YOU HAVE FUN ACTING LIKE A WOMAN?

I think ALL of them are divas but I’m gonna have to go with MC as the ultimate diva. She’s a voice and pop icon. Writes and composes her own music and she has 13 albums in 20 years all co-written and written by her. Her voice makes you feel like you’re in a heavenly place. No one can do it like her in the industry. Her voice WAS unmatched and even if she lost it her legacy will never be forgotten.

Whitney houston defines tjhe word Diva, clearly the most influential singer of our time, look at all the talent shows, every show, every year all across the globe they sing Whitney songs. todays singers from J-hud, monica, brandy, bey, Kelly, Katy sing whitney songs in tribute. all of those named plus other diva’s like mariah, GaGa, britney and Celine cite her as a huge inspiration. her voice defined a generation, she is a national treasure, her name OPENS films, she is the ULTIMATE diva.

WHY IS Patti here. She was the Ciara of her time- a lot of potential but never the one on top.
She turned down so many great songs because she has a poor ear for her music which also lends to her habitual screaming AND her selfish attitude to collaborating is the reason one of Pops cultures biggest performances never came to pass.
Im talking about when Diana Ross gave her the mic to let her sing thinking that when she was done she would pass it on to the other stars on the stage.
Instead if passing the mic on, she screamed her way through the entire performance not letting el de barge, banarama, or ANY of the other stars who were on the stage have their turn.

Well, to be honest it´s absolutely impossible to choose one, IMPOSSIBLE. They all are great. But I need to introduce a fact with which you´ll have to deal, wheter you like it or not, it´s a fact:
- The 4 biggest ever when it comes to succes are Celine, Madonna, Mariah and Whitney. And by soooooooooo far!!!
- The biggest era in music history for a female is The Bodyguard by Whitney houston!!! Deal with it. The second one is Celine Dion´s “My heart will go on”. You´ll have to deal too
- Apart from those 4 I need to make a special mention: Tina Turner. The biggest live performer of them, so genuine and doing worlwide tours that her contemporaries could only dream of

Diva is not really about record sales it’s about performances, swag, influence, and attitude. So that whole little speech about the top four sellers is irrelevant to the question of top diva(for the most part).

Mariah is not responsible for “Hip Pop.” There were pop acts infusing hip hop and rappers into their music LONG before Mariah did it. New Kids on the Block were mixing hip hop with their music when Mariah was still singing those Whitney-rip off ballads, so no…don’t act like she was the architect of that mess. She wasn’t. Speaking of Whitney, hell she even beat Mariah to it with the remix of “My Name Is Not Susan,” which featured Monie Love. Mariah is not responsible for Hip-Pop. All she did was bite off of it when it was already growing in popularity.

Mariah, Whitney & Cher.
Mariah Spans so many musical genre’s and really brought Hip Pop to the fore front of popularity. My Grandma knew who ODB and Mase were because of Mariah.
Whitney, HAD a voice that could never be matched, and really ushered in the Balled driven early ’90′s.
Cher is simply the Original of costume and theatrical performances. She is the Original Madonna & Gaga.
Love Celine’s voice, but her musical style is pretty mature, not youthful enough, (like Mariah and Diana Ross’s music).

janet is not adiva. She is just a glorified dancer who was lucky enough to have met jimmy jam and lewis.
Patti has one of the BEST vocals in the game but she also has some of the worst control, and as someone else mentioned is not long sighted enough to be seen as visionary (she turned down paula abdul’s rush rush).
Madonna is iconic because of her vast visual and musical content.
cher shouldnt be in this list because there is no doubting her impact.

Janet Jackson. She’s not a powerhouse vocalist, but she knows how to use what she has. She uses it as an instrument on her tracks by harmonizing with the instruments and productions on her songs. She’s not limited to just 1 or 2 genres like most of the ones on the list. She was the entertainer that got the other females trying to dance back in the day (especially Whitney and Mariah). She can actually act. Even though she’s worn some very questionable things, she is a fashion icon. Not only did she have younger girls (Britney, Bey, Rihanna, Ciara, and other young ones) wanting to be like her, but she’s also the reason why we had Paula, Jody Watley, Karyn White, Jasmine Guy, Tisha Campbell and so on in music…and it’s not just limited to females either. She never followed the Popular sound of the moment, she either started it (she along with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are the FOUNDERS of the New Jack Swing sound that swept the world in the late 80s-90s…had both Michael and Madonna running to Jam and Lewis to get that “Janet” sound to keep up) or she did something completely different from the Pop sound at the time. She’s made very wise business deals and was the most paid entertainer more than once. Even though Diana did create a blueprint for mainly girl group leaders to follow, Janet created a blueprint for all artists to follow. And she still has it. Her American Idol performance was one of the best performances on Idol in a long time and except for a couple of songs, she basically danced the entire time from the beginning to end of her past tour.
It sucks that folks love to write off Janet’s accomplishments because of the Superbowl 3-second nipple slip. And folks love to discredit her by saying she’s big because of her last name…mind you her first 2 albums weren’t successful with the help of her family (Mike, Randy and Marlong wrote, produced and did some background vocals on those albums while her dad was her manager), and she ended up getting success once she moved away from her family, fired her dad, hooked up with Jam and Lewis, and took ‘Control’ over her life and career. And the bulk of her achievements come from just 5 albums since (at the time) she didn’t release albums back to back 1 or 2 years later like majority of the others).
I respect the others but imho, it’s Janet all the way.

Music_Stan, you should really change your name because you know very little.
Jody Watley was recording with Shalamar 10 years before Janet finally hit with Control, and in the meantime Jody’s solo debut came very hot on the heels of Control…so I doubt that anything Janet did influenced her. Stylistically, Jody and Janet were very different.
Paula Abdul had a career BEFORE Janet’s took off. Hell, if not for Paula’s choreographing the Control music videos, that album might not have taken off the way it did. Janet owes Paula big time for participation in that era.
Janet, Jam and Lewis did NOT create New Jack Swing. The creators of New Jack Swing were Teddy Riley and Keith Sweat. The very first NJS record was Keith Sweat’s “I Want Her” in 1987-88. If anything Jam/Lewis copied some of their later production styling from Teddy Riley, not the other way around.
Finally, Madonna never worked with Jam and Lewis.

@JDE97 My name is staying the same since I’m stating facts and not lies.
First off, I know Jody was in a group before Janet’s ‘Control’ came out. That still didn’t stop her from trying to do Janet’s style.
Secondly, Paula was a cheerleader/choreographer first. She went into the music world as a singer later and was obviously influenced by Janet. Not to mention the simple routines she did WITH Janet aren’t groundbreaking like the ones Janet did WITH Tina Landon. So it’s clear that Janet was going to be successful WITH or WITHOUT Paula’s help.
Janet, Jam and Lewis created the key elements of the NJS sound with ‘Control’ (1986) and continued to do so with “Diamonds” (1987) that started it all.
Finally, I never said Madonna worked with them. Learn how to read :-/ I said she ran to them. How do I know this? Jam and Lewis did an interview about artists who wanted them to produce and help write an entire album with them but they didn’t do it, and they both mentioned Mike and Madonna.
Since you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about, reply to someone else that also don’t know what they’re talking about

Her tours are out of this world and she still out performs ppl half her age. Them Jackson jeans are ridiculous. She’s also not a money hungry bitch like others. She knows she the shit. I think sometimes she don’t even know her damn self.

Patti and Janet could’a been left off the list. As far as I’m concerned anyone who lip-sync’s as much as MaTRYah and Janet and Madonna don’t deserve to be on here. I’d give the fashion one to Madge. In the 80′s Janet was always a THIRD behind Madge and Whitney. Sorry, but true. While I LOVED Mariah’s music at Sony, MaTRYah is HORRIBLE ‘live’ She rerely sings, cares FAR more for her TACKY, TRASHY appearance and being sexy than anything else. You CANNOT be an ultimate DIVA if your nerves get the better of you on stage. Cher and Diana KILL the competition here. Janet and Madonna put the ‘production’ in their shows, but they’re 100% choreographed, nothing is ‘organic’. Mariah will ALWAYS be compared to Whitney, Whitney will NEVER be compared to Mariah and Moo-Moo has CHEAPENED her ‘brand’ w/HSN, perfumes and that Jenny Craig commercial. She just comes across as sad and desperate to compete w/Beyonce and RRi lately. She’s been DROPPED by 2 record labels and has had CD’s been cancelled by her current one. Whitney gets it for most influential. The producers of American Idol have said for YEARS that Whitney songs are chosen by more people to sing than anyone else. Biggest hit? No contest, ‘I WIll Always Love You”. She is in Guiness as the Most Awarded Female Artist of All Time. She NEVER lip-sync’s (when sometimes she probably should). She is a singer’s singer. Diana would be right along with her. Another artist who NEVER lip sync’s. Diana was/is the ORIGINAL Whitney Houston and has a very underrated voice. The woman puts on a HELLUVA show.

Music_Stan is exactly right and quite eloquent with the truth.
If u look at Jody, Karyn White, and Jasmine Guy especially, you see them in Janet’s signature all black with sliver accessories, especially big silver hoop earings.
You see them trying to dance like her in their videos and live performances(along with many others).
Janet did change the game as far as videos go as well, and your right if she was as prolific as the other girls (madonna, etc.) on this list, she would have outsold or matched their sales.
She is the most diva to me because she just exudes sexy and confidence without being a braggard and she is the most well rounded artist to me.

1. Jody’s style is/was nothing like Janet’s. It’s a comparison that Jody, herself, denies.
2. You said that Janet was the “reason” we had Paula. Another lie. Paula’s career in the entertainment industry as a sought after choreographer started BEFORE it transitioned to music, and before Janet came running to her for help. If Paula has any Jackson to thank for her start, it’s Jackie who hired her to choreograph The Jackson’s Victory Tour. Furthermore, I don’t care how “basic” you think Paula’s moves were, Janet used them…and none of her pre-Control performances where she danced showcased her doing anything impressive, or even remotely as good as what Paula later taught her. If she could have found better, then she should have. Like I said, Janet owes Paula for making those videos interesting. Before Paula, Janet was about as interesting to watch as a sock puppet.
3. Again, Teddy Riley was the inventor of New Jack Swing and Keith Sweat’s “I Want Her” was the first song to feature the NJS sound. Nothing on Control even sounds vaguely similar to NJS. That album was a Minneapolis Funk/R&B/Pop. I’d accept Rhythm Nation as NJS-esque, but that came after Teddy and Keith created it.
4. I don’t believe for 2 seconds that Madonna ever went running to Jam/Lewis for production help, and until you furnish the proof I won’t believe it. Your word means nothing.
I did read your post and I know exactly what I’m talking about, and I know when someone (in this case, you) is trying to blow a smokescreen to make their conjured up ‘opinions’ sound like facts, when they’re not. I also know that Janet Jackson fans have a penchant for trying to make her more influential and seminal than she is. I’m not falling for it and I won’t indulge you on it.

@Ass Thank you.
@JDE97 1. Jody’s solo career was a Janet ‘Control’ era rip-off.
2. I never said Janet’s the reason why we had Paula, nor did I say that Janet was her first client. Again learn how to read. :-/
3. How can he invent something that was invented already by Janet, Jam and Lewis? That’s like me saying I invented a snuggie a year after it came out. See how that doesn’t work? Maybe you won’t see since you’ve shown multiple times that your reading comprehension skills are extremely low.
4. You’re on the internet. Look it up like I did.
It’s no secret that Madonna sucks the life out of the hottest artists/producers of the moment to stay relevant. There was no way for her to work with Janet since Mike told Jan what Madonna said about her (Jermaine dissed it out a lil while back), so she went after her producers.
5. Once again not only did you show that you can’t read, but you showed that you have absolutely no idea of what you’re talking about. I can’t call you a hater, because you’re too dumb to know the subject of which I speak of.
6. The only opinion I stated was that Janet is the Ultimate Diva. What I did was back it up with facts….just like everyone else who gave their opinion on their UD and stated facts. If you don’t like it, don’t cry me a river…just build yourself a bridge and get over it.
7. We’re officially done here. You can respond, but all you’ll be doing is making more of an ass of yourself talking about what you don’t know. Toodles. *waves*

Hell’s Yesss When you think ‘DIVA’ that simple word; Diana Ross and Mariah Carey … Maybe Whitney, are really the only women who truly embody all that is ‘The Dive’. Diana Ross tho, is the Diva’s Diva! I’ve always felt like Mariah Carey is the second coming of Diana always (not vocally, but more in style, presentation and image).
@Small_Angle
Lets not talk about Ke$ha please, she doesn’t deserve to be in the same sentence as Britney Spears, let along the likes of Whitney, Diana, Mariah, Aretha, or Madonna. I think the only new generation Diva’s that can be considered are Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna and the truest of true new diva’s Ms. Christina Aguilera!!!
Honestly everyone, if you wanna judge Mariah’s voice, see he Live. She really will blow you away. there’s not normally much theatrics or smoke & mirrors, but hearing her sing in the same room as me has truly change my opinion on this woman’s talent. Even if you’re not a fan, her voice live gives you shivers up ur spin. I know it’s more fun to see Madonna, Gaga, Britney or Rihanna; but the emotional impact of Mariah’s voice live is something to be experienced.

@Music_Stan
1. Jody’s solo career was not at all akin to Janet’s Control-era. Anybody who isn’t completely ignorant of Jody’s music would know that, but I’m not surprised you don’t because…well…you’ve proven yourself to be altogether ignorant.
2. You wrote: “Not only did she have younger girls (Britney, Bey, Rihanna, Ciara, and other young ones) wanting to be like her, but she’s also the reason why we had Paula, Jody Watley, Karyn White, Jasmine Guy, Tisha Campbell and so on in music…” Paula was already in the music industry before working with Janet – as a choreographer. Furthermore, she was already notable. Her singing career had nothing to do with Janet’s. Just like Jody, nothing Paula did during her tenure as a pop star was derived from Janet, if anything it was the other way around. How could it be when it was Paula who came up with one the significant factors that made the Control era a success?
When Paula broke out as her own pop act, she simply took what Janet BORROWED from HER and applied it to her own work!
3. The thing is, New Jack Swing WASN’T yet invented, that’s how Teddy was able to do it! It’s also how Janet/Jam/Lewis were able to come around and hijack it for several songs on the RN1814 album.
My comprehension skills aren’t low. You’re just a liar and I’m calling you on it. *wink*
4. Nope. Since you made the claim that Madonna sought to work with Jam/Lewis, when challenged on the validity of the claim, the burden of proof is on you. I’m not going to go scour the Internet looking for something that I don’t believe in. If you can’t back up your own assertions when questioned, then I’ll just go ahead and dismiss this as yet another lie, and act of desperation, on your part. Works for me.
5. Blah-Blah-Blah…set it to music so I can turn it off.
6. Not true! You also said that Paula Abdul’s and Jody Watley’s music careers were ushered in by Janet, and that Janet/Jam/Lewis created New Jack Swing. All opinions, not facts. Wait a minute…maybe, for once, you’re right…perhaps those aren’t opinions, rather lies from some clown on the Internet trying to boost the significance of his favorite pop star because he knows that her accomplishments don’t stack up against a number of the other artists mentioned in the article!
Typical of a bored stan who has nothing else going on to fill their idle time.
7. I accept your conceding to defeat. *snicker* Good riddance. Better luck next time. If tonight was any indicator, you’ll need it.

@Michael I love Mariah too but you lose that argument because Mariah was definitely influenced by Whitney and not the other way around. Whitney’s touch and influence is felt by Mariah, Celine, Beyonce, Jennifer H., etc. i am sure all those ladies will and in fact have agreed that she was one of their main influences. Still the true diva is Diana Ross. She paved the way for all of these girls. It is true that Patti, Tina, and Aretha came up around the same time but Diana wad the one who led Motown into the history books. The live shows, the hit records, the Oscar nomination, the fashion, the drama, the love affairs, the raw and true talent. Even Oprah says it was all about her.

She got hits all the way back to the Supremes to Love Hangover, Then Lady Sings The Blues, the fashion, the stage presence, etc. Diana set the trail many others followed and are still following. Wasn’t the greatest vocalist but had an Iconic voice and style. Diana did her thing without gimmicks just pure entertainment. Gotta give it up cause she paved the way for many.

Hands down Janet Miss Jackson if your nasty is the baddest DIVA of all time. Just go to one of her concerts and you will see. There has not been a bitch in the game that can out perform Janet. Beyonce is good but she just jumps around the stage and flings her hair. Janet is a technical and precise dancer that can dance to choreography and freestyle. Check out the Velvet Rope Tour or The All For You Tour and you will see greatness at it’s best.

@JDE97. You are wrong, I just researched it…here it is; “A collaboration between former members of Minneapolis music group The Time, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Janet Jackson originated the style that came to be known as new jack swing with Jackson’s third studio album Control. Jam and Lewis used similar influences with hip-hop influenced drums with smoother R&B stylings in the production. Though Jackson had previously been popular in R&B music, Control established her crossover appeal in the popular music market. Musicologist Richard J. Ripani Ph.D., author of The New Blue Music: Changes in Rhythm & Blues, 1950–1999 (2006), observed that the album was one of the first successful records to influence the rise of new jack swing by creating a fusion of R&B, rap, funk, disco and synthesized percussion.[3] The success of Control, according to Ripani, bridged the gap between R&B and rap music.[3] He asserts that “[s]ince Jackson’s album was released in 1986 and was hugely successful, it is not unreasonable to assume that it had at least some impact on the new jack swing creations of Teddy Riley.”
JANET ALL DAY!!! She’s done it all, Music, Movies, etc..hell her book topped the best sellers list…fashion, THE BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE EVER….The 21 year old kid who said she’s just a glorified dancer, SIT YO ASS DOWN…Do your research…Sometimes her fashion is questionable…but what can I say? Whitney Houston, No Contest!
First, on live performances, all the lip synchers need to sit down. Sorry Celine, Janet, Madonna, Cher, Mariah. Of the rest, only Whitney can get a standing ovation as she walks on to the stage. She has stage Magic, and knows how to work that divatude.
Catalog? Madonna has sales, as does Mariah, but (yawn) their stuff is forgetable, and 50 years from now nobody will be playing anything that they recorded. Only Aretha and Whitney are in this competition (honorary mention to Tina). Aretha is prolific but her stuff is mostly all the same genre, there is a lot of filler in there, and not too much for No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 which is the prestige chart. Whitney has a record 7 CONSECUTIVE Number 1 Hits on the Bilboard Hot 100, back before th 39 cent digital downloads. Those 7 consecutive number 1s are a catalog on their own, and that’s before the Bodyguard. Fact is, every single WH album is killer, she just won’t sing a song if it she does not feel it (that’s divatude), and for that reason her catalog is classic. That’s why her vocal arangements are the most covered and flat out copied of any artist, period.
Biggest Hit? I Will Always Love You, no contest.
Multi-Dimensional? The competition is Whitney Houston, Cher, Diana, and Madonna. Cher has movies and an Oscar; Madonna has some movies and a Golden Globe. Diana has movies and an Oscar nomination. Whitney has movies, and a huge hit movie at that, WH hasTV (Cinderella was the biggest TV movie of its kind at the time), and WH has huge producing successs with her Princess Diaries and Cheetah Girls movie series. Besides, Cher and Madonna just don’t have good voices (they are the two weakest vocalists of this diva competition) so they are out for being not the very best in their primary field. When it comes to ticket sales and bodies in the seats, Whitney’s movies stomp Diana’s as well as Madonna’s and Cher’s. So Whitney wins this one, too.
Fashion? When WH walks out in a gown, not one of these other diva can stand on the same stage. WH was a model and it shows; she knows which gowns to pick and how to rock ‘em. I would give Diana second place.
Still Got It. Whitney is back and healthy again and Sparkle shows she’s still got it. And she lit up the stage at BET’s Celebration of Gospel 2011. That was Divatude. I think Patti still has it too. And Madonna and Janet probably still have it as well, since they only lip sync and dance they can still entertain as long as they stay in shape and put on a good show with lots of good dancers and coreography. It may not be singing, but it is entertaining, so they get credit here.
Influential/Emulated? Anyone who’s seen American Idol (Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lewis, and all the other Whitney imitators) knows that Whitney is the singers’ singer. All the rest who have come after Whitney admit it, from Mariah to Celine, to Jennifer Hudson. As Babyface once said when speaking of Whitney Houston, “nobody really knows how ‘BAD’ she really is. Aretha is the only other singer who is close to Whitney in influence, but she comes in second because her influence was more limited to singers of R&B and soul. But Aretha was definitely an influence on Whitney, so she gets props. As Mariah once said, “none of us would sound the same if Aretha Franklin had not put out a reocrd, or if Whitney Houston hadn’t.”
But, here’s the thing. If asked, Whitney Houwton would sing the praises of every one of these other ladies. She would say how much she loves their music, and how much she enjoys listening to them. She always encourages other young female singers (Monica, Brandy, Mary J, Faith Evans, etc.) and would sing backup gladly for any of these other divas if they asked, because she is generous in spirit and genuinely loves singing. Whitney only has kind things to say about all these other divas, and that grace, to me, is the true measure of a real diva. Whitney Houston all the way!

Lmao at these janet fans.
Paula Abdul was ALREADY established by the time Janet knew how to do her first 8 Count, so established that she was choreographing for the Jackson 5, so in many ways Paula gave birth to Janet.
Janets success really has nothing to do with her because her music was down to Jimmy and Terry, her military style was down to her lover at the time who was also her creative director and her choreography was down to Paula.
And you have the nerve to compare Janet to Jody, Jody embraced New Jack Swing long before janet ever did.

Wait, did i see someone say Janet, Jimmy and Terry invented New Jack Swing, dont even make me laugh.
Janet is just a very good chameleon, she’ll follow a popular trend and act as though she pioneered it.
In the 90s when R&B was popular, she turned herself into a Pop alternative to Eryka Badu and was very ‘afro-centric (see Together Again video and Till Its Gone) not to forget Lonely. People credit her as being a pioneer of 90s R&B when all she did was copy what TLC and the rest had already BEEN doing.

Paula was not already established before Janet. Paula owes her career to Janet and the Jacksons. She, herself has stated this many times. She was nothing more than a LA lakers cheerleader/choreographer who came up because she started fucking Jermaine. She was a choreographer to Janet and nothing more. and Jody Watley fans are hilarious…..REALLY?? no comment. Can she even fill up a club these days.
As for New Jack swing, both the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis fans are right as well as the Teddy Riley fans. JJ&TL invented it and Teddy Riley redefined it. If you do your research on New Jack Swing you will DEFINITELY find where Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are credited with creating New Jack Swing from Janet’s CONTROL album. Way before Teddy Riley helped redefine it.

Ms Franklin my dear
You dont know what your taking about. Paula choreographed a couple of videos for janet during the control era, Paula gave birth to no one hun.
She was very much influenced by Janet, not the other way around. Paula was an established choreographer not an artist, until she watched Janet do her thing for several years, and then came out!

Regardless of what she says or doesn’t say anyone who thinks Mariah Carey wasn’t influenced by Whitney Houston is a fool. She has certainly come into her own (and I am a fan) but just listen to those first few albums. And Christina may emulate Mariah but it was her singing Run To You by Whitney that got her her recording contract. It is Whitney’s songs that everyone “tries” to sing on all these talent shows. Some of these artist are jack of all trades but good at none or one. Whitney has killed it in every arena. The title goes to Whitney.

Whitney Houston like Diana Ross are the only two on this list that could walk in a room and be the center of the ball. Their personas–their aura screams DIVA. These were the two women who ad master success on both R&B and Pop charts bigger than any of these other female artists.
It would be between Diana and Whitney…but of course I’d choose Whitney because she has mastered everything better than anyone else.

Attitude, poise, tone, stage presence, she had it all. She was Americas sweet heart. After Whitney I’d give it to Aretha because she had soul. If Whitney don’t win this has to be bias. Anyhoo:
I voted for Whitney because when Whitney puts something out I have a level of trust that it will be quality material. The films she has produced, the albums she has put out. She doesn’t have the quantity over many of them but she definitely has the quality. There is no “Glitter”, no “Swept Away” moment in her career. She chooses carefully and it pays off.

The only one in the guiness book of records for having #1 Hot 100 hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s! The mutha of Madonna and the grand mutha of Gaga and not to mention the mutha of every drag queen since her arrival! The only one up there with a grammy, an oscar, an emmy plus her 3 golden globes. 27 studio albums and more greatest hits compilations than you have fingers not to mention her 210 million records sold. And who can forget her ridiculously amazing Farewell Tour that lasted 3 years? Man the bitch is still selling out shows night after night as a resident performer in Vegas. None of those ladies up there can compare to the greatness that is Cherilyn Sarkisian! POINT BLANK PERIOD!

She is also very emulated(Jessica Simpson, christina aguilera, Kelly Clarkson Leona Lewis) among others who all try and sound like the queen Mariah. It’s plenty videos of all of them Praising Mariah and citing her as their main inspirations. Check you-tube 4 that.
Lets not forget Mimi writes, produces, vocally arranges all the masterpieces she has created. She is their at the inception of the song. She is super involved in the ENTIRE process.
Unlike Whitney who merely shows up to the studio, sings the already written and demo song, records one take and leaves. Celine does the same. They don’t put in nearly as much time and effort to create the music as Mariah who pours her heart and soul into each L Y R I C and emotional vocal.

She’s got the voice even though sometimes Whitney ties with her, but anyway she is 67 and out of all the older divas ( Aretha Dianna Cher Tina) still can sang (with 5 octaves!!!) and when it comes to live singing she takes the cake hell she is more known for her live performances than her studio performances.

Nothing more than a cattle call to attract the most clingy and pressed pussy lickers of each to come in and campaign for their selected “diva” like it’s a presidential election. Whitney was quite possibly the best singer to emerge in the last 50 years. At her peak, she could probably outsing ANY and EVERYONE who dared stand in front of her (even greats like Aretha, Patti, etc., etc.). Taylor Dayne, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion…all Whitney clones and impersonators, who their record company created in her image. The world was literally hers. And what does she then do? Throws this immense gift/blessing/talent away with cigarettes, drugs, Bobby Brown and a generally ungrateful attitude. Then for a number of years she adopts this “I don’t give a fuck” attitude about her career (which means her fans.) For THAT, I cannot respect her.
Whitney from 1985-1991 was untouchable. Whitney from 1992 (yes I know that was her Bodyguard era) to about 2004 was a total disgrace. Now it seems like she wants to clean up her act, and while I respect the attempts I can’t get over how if she had been humble and wise enough to not deliberately fuck up during those 1992-2004 years, she wouldn’t be in such unfixable disarray. I can’t reconcile the woman who recorded “All the Man I Need” sounding like she does today, and allowing herself to become almost passé and irrelevant in the 21st century. It’s too much of a damn shame.

One of the characteristics to being a diva is having a voice the reaches the heavens and Janet certainly does not. We all love Janet but you people are being bias and it’s so obvious.
Mariah is the clear winner here. She has managed to remain relevant 20+ years into her career.

Diva??
Is having a contest of who is the biggest diva, U.S. of course, the punch is between Cher, Madonna, Mariah, Janet, Tina, Aretha, Patti, Whitney, Celine, Dianna.
Diva to me to be not only need to have a bitch Voice, originality is required to be avant-garde, and above all have attitude, voice is clear but not the principal.
… Some are saying that there is only Mariah, Whitney because they have the best voice, best ?????
Sorry, but the term is very fashionable, and when it was fashionable were already told Divas, Cher, Aretha, Tina, Patti and Dianna. The big problem is that there are people who do not accept the fact that these ladies of the music world did things at times when things were not as easy as today.
On the merits Mariah, Whitney and Celine deserve the term, but before they existed the ORIGINAL DIVAS.
