Another day, another Rihanna criticism.
Indeed, just days after Annie Lennox suggested the model wasn’t doing enough to speak out against domestic violence, today saw Brit Pop Royal Will Young weigh in on her and oft polarizing cause.
His comments below….
Speaking to OMG, he explained:
I don’t think Rihanna is a massively great role model for women, her lyrics aren’t empowering. She’s a brilliant pop star and recording artist but her lyrics are not empowering – young girls have to listen to those lyrics.
I saw her kissing a girl in one of her videos [‘S&M’] and I thought who is this for? If you’re going to do it just go the whole way like Madonna did and have sex on a bed.
Image wise Lady Gaga and Adele are more empowering. I’m more interested in women like Annie Lennox or Grace Jones, people who have challenged the female form who have owned it and brought it forward
Women in a patriarchal society should be empowering and owning their bodies, I don’t think Rihanna is. I feel quite strongly about this.
Here’s the thing:
Though Young’s remarks are nothing short of gospel, he- like Jay Z before him- expects too much from Rihanna.
Because, if she barely shows interest in perfecting the very craft she claims to enjoy, what makes him think she’s interested in being anybody’s freedom fighter.
For, as recent events have shown, Fenty is oblivious to the influence she has on her fans and wider Pop culture. This, we’d say- is the reason her writers see nothing wrong with aiming R-rated lyrics at her pre-teen audience. They really don’t care.
On the flip side, it is sexist to label any woman who openly talks about enjoying sex ‘degrading’, but seeing as sex is the only thing Rihanna is interested in talking about these says, we see Will’s point.

I don’t know why nowadays Ppl want artist and socialite to be role models for kids of today. When I was young I looked up to my grandma, and that was like 10,12 years ago. Now my little cousins, brother and sisters look up to whoever is on their ipod or fav shows. The want to be on bad girls club, or jersey shore. When parents realize that they are the role models and not celebrities then maybe we will see a change in a lot of thing.

firstly everyone should know the countries we live in are dictated by culture, Pop culture being a major influence, In our pop culture there are these high and powerful people we look up to that inspire us, and influence us. One of those people is Rihanna;

Because in todays culture you do not find many artist pushing society of fear of judgement, She is fuelled by haters and lovers and where credit is due whether you like her or not she is doing what Rihanna and other pop stars are not! She is trying to shift pop culture; She has been loved by the gays and social outcasted people because of the connection of feeling like a freak, and making a POSITIVE impact on peoples life, and in between she is making a name for herself as a artist like no other,
as someone mentioned earlier YES Lady Gaga is not mrs perfect BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS BETWEEN HER AND RIHANNA LOOK AT WHAT THEY ARE ADVERTISING TO TO THE PUBLIC;

And lastly this is where the border is; Rihanna is singing songs completly sexualised and even a ten year old can tell its about s** and now if Rihanna is wearing next to nothing its all contributing to her overly sexualised image

Therefore if she dresses slightly skimpy (which i believe lady gaga goes for a visual image personally if it that means wearing less) her impact isn’t as bad as Rihannas

Rihanna made her fortune by acting like she doesn’t care. Commenting on a “fake” personality trait, which is really just a marketing ploy is a waste of time. She’s already crossed the bridge from being “cute” to being “annoying”. People are calling on her to be role model, but what they really mean is that her old marketing strategy is worn out and boring–her ass is getting to old immature to be “cute”.
I kinda agree. It seems that Rihanna’s team got the wrong idea back when she got noticed in the SOS video and people thought she looked great, they then seemed to put image first and music later. I personally think that Rihanna’s music has become less, and less interesting, i think that she peaked at GGGB and since then it seems to be good singles, album fillers and and a few albums that are basically in the same vein.
Rihanna isn’t as revolutionary as she may think. Yes she can rock a outfit but so can Cassie and a dozen other “singers” Her vocals and progression seems to have taken a back seat to her image.

I think Rihanna is a good role model because she is being her self, I don’t condone everything she does.
