Rihanna – Last Girl On Earth
My soft spot for arena spectaculars returned and I pootled down to the O2 for a heady dose of Rihanna – The Last Girl on Earth. What’s more with Pixie Lott and Tinchy Stryder on the bill, the audience got serious bang for their buck. That said, whilst Rihanna is a megastar of the highest order and has a collection of songs that easily sent the audience wild, the event suffered because it is a show that thinks it’s much cleverer than it is.
Tinchy Stryder didn’t exactly earn his fee with a three song, ten minute set. Given half an hour to fill this seemed pretty measly and whilst all the tunes were big hitters none really got the crowd going (mind you, does he actually have any other material?). He wasn’t helped by terrible lighting that trapped him to a spot although he often wandered into the darkness around anyway. Pixie Lott had a much better time of things and whilst her music isn’t obviously arena filling she gave a likeable set with a fair whack of audience banter and a decent range of songs.
Rihanna decided to turn up nearly half an hour late which struck me as utter madness. She only has fans to lose through such silly behaviour, incredibly loud music prevented any real disharmony breaking out in the crowded arena floor area but no one was impressed. When she arrived it was quite clear that the sweet West Indian Rihanna was long gone (hardly a surprise after “Rated R”) to be replaced with a doom and gloom, slightly pretentious persona that just about works. Her much talked about costumes are eye-popping but despite the early press reveal almost no skin at all, even the PVC outfit at closer inspection revealed more flesh coloured material than genuine skin. I can’t say I went to this concert to simply ogle the woman but there was a unappealing desperation to be racy that pervaded the show, her dancing mostly overtly erotic, too much felt like affectation rather than reality. The designs had scale on their side and between the pink tank, crashed car and white cage variety was never in short supply, but the overall dream/omega man theme was a bit of a mess, the portentous video sequences mercifully brief.
She does have a tremendous set of songs on her side however and huge plaudits must go the many choreographers for making her relatively small number of backing dancers fill the stage. She opened with an impressive enough account of Russian Roulette before launching into a rapid pace hour and a half of hit after hit. Did we really need a cover of Wonderwall? Probably not but otherwise she barely put a foot wrong in her song selection (pretty much entirely from her last two albums) and her singing, whilst hardly subtle, had a strength I didn’t expect. Highlights were “Disturbia”, imaginatively staged with performers in cool costumes on stilts and “Don’t Stop the Music” which had Dayglo outfits and terrific use of the dancers. “Te Amo” sounded brilliant but the staging seemed oddly arbitrary (plus a little slip from our star although she recovered impeccably), aerial work included for no particular reason. I’d have liked more audience interaction although what we got was if anything a detriment to the show, Rihanna needlessly swearing and shouting “London” far too often; when the soft opening of “Take a Bow” kicked in she felt compelled to ruin the vibe with some aggressive shouting…
Rihanna has all the material she requires but “Last Girl On Earth” tries just a little bit too hard to be something more than a pop-show and doesn’t really manage it. Live music on this scale is always a blast and I had a mighty fine time but the faux raunchiness ended up being surprisingly unsexy. Good work from Pixie Lott started the evening off in fine style (after the damp squib of Tinchy Stryder) and once she finally appeared Rihanna exuded charisma all evening. Brilliant fun but hardly groundbreaking.

i almost didn’t read that but that critic sounds just about right. most of the things he/she is saying i would most definitely agree with. this was not a one sided review at all because the person gave props when they were due. watch you see Rihanna stans come on here and get mad at the review.

Ugh, is she still going on with this single? I seriously forgot all about it after learning she is also going forth with “Te Amo.” It is clearly a better song, something different, and a hot summer song. She should just drop that other single, release “Te Amo,” so she can officially wrap this album and move on to the next one like scheduled.
Her nose is no bigger than the average black person’s nose (we do have large noses by nature, in case the rest of you ignorant ass n****** weren’t aware), and to the idiot who said she bleaches her skin – the b**** has ALWAYS been light skinned. what do the future hold for a lot of you broke people? theres a lot of people working like firefighters, police, medical people and a lot of others working hard and they make a decent living . and that is what rihanna is doing she is making a decent living and its in the entertainment industry,,,, 15 million in 2008 was not bad since she was riding the success of her album gggb, then the toured with glow in the dark, nerd, loupe and west and in the fall she of 2008 she signed with gucci again. those are things thas good that has helped this talented artist spring up to where she is today.
her creativity has crowd appeal, and for her song rude boy to cross over to pop, is really saying a mouth full and stayed # 1 for a while and even tho it is #2 now that is still good for a so called singing billy goat, the goat and the big headed artist is doing darn good. and all of us are seeing it together.

I hope she doesn’t succumb to the pressures of those who think that their beautiful african feature that god gave them should somehow be altered by surgery to be straighter and narrower in order to be acceptable. rihanna should keep the nose that complements her features so well, and is all part of the package that makes rihanna beautiful. and rihanna is naturally light. look at her father , brothers and paternal grandmother, lightness runs in the family. and her maternal grandfather is light as well with greyish green eyes. so its in her genes, just get over it.
