Historically, the MTV Video Music Awards have saved the surprises for the show. However, organisers are bringing the jaw-dropping moments early this year. Because Rihanna, yes Rihanna, has been named the 2016 recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Saluted for her contributions to the world of music visuals, the honour will see Rih join the list of previous winners such as Beyonce, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears. She will also perform.

Truthfully speaking “ThatGrapeJuice” I thought the same thing, but looking at her video catalog she has had some decent videos, great even i.e. “Man Down” “We Found Love” “B**** Better Have My Money” “Russian Roulette” “Where Have You Been” and the underrated “AmericanOxygen” etc. I’m very tough when it comes to this award and who deserves it and who doesn’t(Justin Timberlake) but we have to give credit where it’s due and in this case, it’s well DESERVED! Sorry to tell you but Rihanna deserves it.I don’t see how you all can continue to try and shade this girl. She is releasing hit after hit. Her studio vocals are amazing because of the emotion she has when she songs. She pleasant to listen to and confident as hell when you see her perform. She is a star. This award is specifically about the quality of her music VIDEOS, not her overall career and approach to music abroad. There is a huge difference. No one is saying she doesn’t deserve awards for her talents in other areas but releasing consistent ground breaking visuals isn’t something she focuses on. That’s the harsh truth but so is her getting this awards. Shrugs.. And that’s why Sam feels the industry is losing credit. Yeah, Sam can be out of pocket many times but I agree with him here. The industry seems to be in this force feed mood right now. Just forcing things on people prematurely and that hurts more than help. I support Rihanna but this is not for her. Out of all her music videos the most stunning and thought one that created an even like vibe when preparing to watch is was We Found Love. It was a very good video but after that she went back to typical good. If I recall the award is based on music, achievements and philanthropy, meaning her charties and donations ( which she has done through the years including her foundation) you dont like Rihanna which is fine but she is one of the most charitable high profile celebrities out there. Britney was the first mega-icon to take a hit! … Don’t get me wrong, she’s still a pop princess, but she was expected to last longer than she did, given her status! Lady Gaga’s domination also ended prematurely. Miley’s gimmicks got old fast! Even Eminem isn’t a big deal now.
Now that we can officially makes claims that both, the ‘Lemonade’ and ‘Anti’ era made some noteworthy accomplishments in yet another era by these 2, it’s time to see if their peers can do the same! We’re all watching Katy, Taylor and Adele to see if one of them is next to go! This industry is tough and having longevity isn’t easy!
