It’s been three years since Lizzo ignited a firestorm of clap backs from Madonna fans after declaring Janet the Queen of Pop, but it appears she’s about to stoke the fire once again.

Hot on the promo trail in support of her comeback singles ‘Still Bad’ and ‘Love in Real Life,’ the 4-time GRAMMY winner visited the ‘Sibling Rivalry‘ podcast to talk about her forthcoming album and all-things Pop music.

While chatting about the latter, the songstress (born Melissa Jefferson) doubled down on her belief about the Madonna vs. Janet debate.

“I have to really clear up some sh-t because people came for me on the Internet because I said Janet Jackson is the Queen of Pop. I said Janet is the Queen of Pop, and here is why…Britney Spears is doing a Janet impression – and she said it. Janet is her diva. There were no such things as ‘Pop divas’ before Janet – she was first. She was famous when Madonna was a kid watching her on TV,” she relayed to hosts Bob the Drag Queen and Monet X Change.

Despite her allegiance to Janet, Jefferson was clear her belief of Jackson’s superiority wasn’t necessarily based solely on talent.

“It’s not because someone is better than the other, [Janet] was just first. And, she is Janet. She invented this sh-t,” Melissa relayed.

Later in her address of the backlash from Madonna fans, Lizzo clarified that she does respect the ‘Like a Prayer’ diva’s place in history.

“Madonna is the Pop icon, and I love her. And, we can’t refute her influence or what she’s done for all of the divas. She birthed a generation,” she said before reflecting on the disses from Madge fans. “I felt like I was fighting for my life because people was dragging me by my ankles.”

At writing, Madonna nor Janet has responded to Lizzo’s latest commentary on the Queen of Pop debate. Their fans, on the other hand, are certainly doing it on their behalfs.

Lizzo please just make your music and disappear. Do not make any public statements or become a social advocate until you hire a PR Team because you are extremely irritating.

    Now for the facts:

    Paula Abdul made Janet.

Janet’s first album 1982 — peaked to number 63 on the billboard 200.

Madonna’s first album 1983 — peaked to number 8 on the billboard 200.

No one was looking for inspiration from Janet when she was a kid they looked at MJ.

      Chile pls:

So Paula made Janet because she choreographed 3 videos? GTFOH!! The Control album was a hit because of the music, and impact!! Not because of a choreographer. And since when does a billboard placement justify any credibility on impact? Sit. Lizzo is right. While Madonna did make a huge impact on pop culture, Janet’s impact speaks for itself. Every diva back then, and even today was influenced by janet. In the 80’s record companies were trying to clone janet like nobody’s business. Jody Watley, Karyn White, Paula Abdul, I can go on and on. And the 90’s, Shanice, Britney, Xtina, Aaliyah, 00’s/2010’s: Beyoncé, Ciara, Tinashe, Janet’s influence far outshines Madonna’s. There is a reason why she was once the highest paid female entertainer.

@ jean. very articulated 100% facts

      • Damn April 4, 2025

You missed the point. Janet as a kid wasn’t an influence on Madonna. Madonna was bigger than her AND Janet started her real career only one year before Madonna and she’s younger than her, Madonna didn’t need Janet as influence during that time.

No one said she isn’t Legendary but she’s definitely not THE queen of of pop, that’s just a fact.

Madonna’s contributions to pop music are monumental and multifaceted, earning her the enduring title of “Queen of Pop.” Here are some of the key ways she has shaped the genre:
Reinvention and Versatility: Madonna is known for continually reinventing her image and sound, keeping her music fresh and relevant. From the synth-pop of the 1980s to the electronic experimentation of the 2000s, her ability to evolve has been unmatched.
Pushing Boundaries: She broke taboos and explored themes like sexuality, religion, and gender in ways that were both controversial and empowering. Songs like “Like a Prayer” and “Vogue” challenged societal norms and sparked cultural conversations.
Iconic Visuals: Madonna’s music videos, from “Material Girl” to “Like A Virgin” set new standards for storytelling and artistry in the visual medium. She turned the music video into an essential art form for pop music.
Genre Fusion: She has blended a wide variety of musical genres, from disco and pop to R&B and electronica, paving the way for future artists to experiment without fear of being boxed into one style.
Empowerment and Individuality: Madonna has championed self-expression and independence, inspiring generations of fans and artists to embrace their authenticity and take creative risks.
Pioneering Performances: Her live shows, such as the “Blond Ambition” tour, redefined the pop concert experience with elaborate staging, choreography, and theatrical elements.
LGBTQ+ Advocacy: Madonna has been a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating and uplifting marginalized voices throughout her career. Songs like “Express Yourself” and “Vogue” became anthems of pride and self-acceptance.
These contributions not only revolutionized pop music but also reshaped the cultural landscape. Her influence extends far beyond music, leaving an indelible mark on art, fashion, and social movement. The true Queen of Pop. Lizzo is just sad .
