Yolanda Saldivar, Selena's Killer, Denied Parole

For reasons good, bad, ugly, and everything in between, 2025 was one for the books!

As the year draws to a close, That Grape Juice is reflecting on the occasions that rocked – and to some degree – maybe even reshaped the Urban and Pop cultural landscape as we know it.

Next, we’ll look back at the latest chapter in the Yolanda Saldivar story – the woman responsible for the death of Tejano music Queen Selena Quintanilla.

Yolanda may be infamous for pulling the trigger of the gun that killed beloved Tejano singer Selena in 1995, but – three decades after she was convicted for the crime – the now-65-year-old not only maintained her innocence but also ended 2024 by announcing plans to file for parole.

At the time, members of her family even took to press to reveal they supported her decision.

“Keeping her in prison isn’t going to do any good,” said a cousin of the embattled prisoner. “It’s time for her to get out.”

Despite their belief she paid her debt to society, some inmates revealed she was likely safer inside the prison walls as there were reports of a “bounty” on her head if she exited the facility.

“Everyone knows who Yolanda Saldívar is,” said Marisol Lopez, an inmate who served time alongside her for a brief stint. “There’s a bounty on her head, like everyone wants a piece of her. The guards keep her away from everyone else, because she’s hated so much. If she were out [in general population], someone would try to take her down.”

Saldivar won’t be finding out about those alleged bounty hunters any time soon it seems as a judge in Texas officially rejected her request for parole in March 2025.

The denial was cited on the grounds of the violent nature of her crime and the collective sentiment that she poses a “continuing threat” to the community.

As a result, she must continue serving her life sentence until 2030 when she is eligible for parole petition again.
