The Weeknd ruffled feathers Wednesday (April 8) when an excerpt from his interview with ‘Variety’ nabbed headlines for insinuating his ‘game changing music’ influenced a wave of other singers, specifically Usher (click here to read).

The Grammy winner (born Abel Tesfaye) name-dropped the R&B veteran’s 2012 hit, ‘Climax,’ as evidence of those who swiped his sound – a suggestion met with staunch disapproval from the latter’s fan base.

One supporter, Elijah Blake (who is credited as the tune’s songwriter), took particular offense to Tesfaye’s claim and took to Instagram to clap back on Usher’s behalf.

‘Underdog’ is proving itself a winner for Alicia Keys.

The latest single from her delayed seventh album, ‘ALICIA,’ the Johnny McDaid-produced tune was released in January and only made a brief appearance in the Hot 100 at that time before slipping out of the tally for weeks.

However, after a lifeline came in the form of an Amazon-sponsored push (click here to read more), ‘Underdog’ became an anthem for essential workers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.  Re-engagement from the public, alongside an aggressive promo campaign that’s seen her perform the song on a number of televised platforms in recent weeks, has spelled well for its renewed performance on the Hot 100.

The music realm continues to reel at news of R&B/Soul icon Bill Withers‘ passing.

As his songs ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘Lovely Day,’ and more are listed on the soundtrack to many lives, it’s only fitting and expected to see a bevy of tributes lifted in his honor.

Beyond the many turning to his music for consolation (as evidenced by his greatest hits dominating streaming and digital download platforms), admirers – including some of the biggest names in Pop and R&B – are taking to social media to bid farewell.

John Legend, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Justin Timberlake, and Chance the Rapper are just a few of them.  See more inside:

As expected, Drake shot to the top of real-time iTunes charts just minutes after the release of his latest single, ‘Toosie Slide’ (April 3).

Named in honor of Atlanta dancer Toosie, the song was originally teased with the Internet sensation performing its accompanying moves.

“It go right foot up, left foot slide/Left foot up, right foot slide,” Drizzy commands in the Oz-produced cut.

Just in case you need a bit more visual instruction, however, the 33-year-old shows off the moves while making social distancing look cooler than ever.  Look inside to see what we mean:

Megan Thee Stallion could be well on her way to the biggest hit of her career courtesy of her latest single, ‘Savage.’

Found aboard the femcee’s latest top 10 EP, ‘Suga,’ the J. White Did It-produced cut has enjoyed a wave of success on digital sales and streaming platforms over the last few weeks thanks to a viral Tik Tok craze that challenges the app’s users (including celebrities) to upload videos of themselves doing choreography to it (like we reported here).

The enduring popularity of ‘Savage’ on social media outlets is finally reflecting in its Hot 100 run as evidenced by the most refreshed edition of the tally.  Seeing ‘Savage’ strut to #20 as the result of a whopping 78-spot leap, the bop’s impressive jump brings with it two milestones for Meg.  Not only is it the second top 20 single of her career (following 2019’s Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign-assisted ‘Hot Girl Summer’), but it’s also her first time in that region of the chart unaccompanied.  All this ahead of the release of its official music video!

As we extend congratulations to the burgeoning diva, look below to see who joins her in the top 25 on this week’s episode of ‘TGJ Chart Check: Hot 100.’

Sh*t is getting real for a Cardi B parody-turned-viral hit thanks to the ‘I Like It’ diva’s endorsement.

As we reported here last week, after DJ iMarkkeyz fashioned quotes from a video of her ranting about her fears of the spread of coronavirus into a full-on song, the clip became so popular it made its way to her Twitter page.

Once she put her stamp of approval on it, the tune found its way to the top 10 of iTunes charts.  Fast forward to this week, ‘Coronavirus’ (the song) has found tenancy on multiple Billboard charts.

It’s just a good week to be The Weeknd.

The same day the Grammy winner unleashed his highly anticipated fourth studio album, ‘After Hours’ (March 20), he learned its two lead singles – ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights’ – had been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting over 1 million in sales equivalence respectively (as we reported here).

Released via XO/Republic, the set made Apple Music history by surpassing over a million pre-adds on the service by the time of its release.  Going on to dominate the digital platform’s real-time charts, ‘Hours’ also commanded a number of positions on other digital tallies like iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify. His grip over the latter was so notable, the streaming giants took to social media to congratulate him on news the LP had zoomed past the 1 billion spins mark.
