LL Cool J’s 1996 smash ‘Doin’ It’ serves as this week’s From The Vault video. Though the song needs little introduction (come on now!), it’s worth highlighting that it’s lifted from L’s ‘Mr Smith’ album, which also spawned major hits such as ‘Loungin’ and ‘Hey Lover (ft. Boyz II Men):

A classic, if there ever was one. LL was definitely at his peak here and for that reason ‘Doin It’ will forever remain one of the 90’s defining Hip-Hop releases. It’s a shame contemporary Hip-Hop has nothing on Hip-Hop of the past. Still, I guess that’s why we have Youtube.

New Song: Mariah Carey – ‘Touch My Body’ (Remix) (ft. The Dream)

As with most of Mariah’s releases, it was only a matter of time before an official remix surfaced. 2007 breakout star The Dream lays down vocals on this remix of Mimi’s current smash ‘Touch My Body’ – which he also co-wrote. Though the song’s instrumentation is largely the same – aside from a few parts, Dream’s verse is a welcome addition.

New Song: Donnie – ‘Dr. Love’ (Snippet)

With the release of albums by Donnie’s Making The Band 4 cast-mates drawing closer (Danity Kane – March 18th / Day26 -March 25th), many have been wondering what’s going on with his project. Word has it the 23 year old will drop his debut LP sometime this summer, and he is still in the studio working on the record.Meanwhile, a snippet of a track Donnie completed with producer 7even (Ashanti, Ja Rule etc) called ‘Dr. Love’ has surfaced. While the uptempo cut is pretty solid, it’s makes it hard to not look at Donnie as a ‘Diet Coke’ version of Justin Timberlake. The song could easily have been placed on Justin’s ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ record. Neither Donnie’s material nor stint on the show has me amped for his album. He’s gonna need to come a little less predictable than this.

Erykah Badu Performs ‘Honey’ On VH1 SoulStage

Soul singer Erykah Badu recently performed a set for VH1 SoulStage to support the release of her new album ‘New Amerykah’ – which currently sits at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Check out this performance her current single ‘Honey’ from the show:

Great performance. As ever, Erykah was vocally on-point and the band were getting it too. The fast(er) arrangement of the song was a nice touch.

Remy Ma & Papoose Engaged

According to AllHipHop.com, rappers Remy Ma and Papoose are engaged to be married this summer. The news was announced on BET’s Black Carpet show yesterday. They’ll sure be needing each other in the coming months, as the report below points out:

The strength of their relationship will certainly be tested, as jury selection has begun for Remy Ma’s trial for the alleged shooting of an acquaintance over money.

The Grammy nominated rapper is accused of shooting a woman twice in the abdomen after leaving a party in Greenwich Village.

Remy, 26, who allegedly accused Makeda Barnes-Joseph of stealing $2,000 from her purse, has pleaded not guilty to assault and related charges.

The pair will probably be using their superior lyrical abilities soon after another alleged assault occurred between Papoose and Fat Joe.

Fat Joe and Papoose recently clashed in a physical altercation that has sparked an intense beef.

I didn’t even know these two were going together. Move over, Nas and Kelis lol lol lol…not.

Dru Hill Reunite…Then Break Up 10 Minutes Later

Beyonce Lands Another Movie Role

It seems Beyonce is really legit with her acting ambitions. Following the news that she will be playing legend Etta James in ‘Cadillac Cars’, it was, today, announced that she will be starring in another film alongside Idris Elba (of ‘The Wire’ fame) called ‘Obsessed’:

Steve Shill will direct a script by David Loughery. Will Packer produces, and Knowles will be exec producer along with her father, Mathew Knowles.

In “Obsessed,” Elba will play an asset manager who has a knockout wife (Knowles) and thriving career until a temp office worker (Larter) begins stalking him. {Read More}

Granted Beyonce’s acting talents often leave a lot to be desired (See: ‘Goldmember’, ‘Pink Panther’), I’m anxious to see if she can pull this off. To date, the only convincing character I’ve seen her portray well was Deena in ‘Dreamgirls’ – no guesses for why there. Still, I can’t knock her hustle.

Check out this clip of Danity Kane on the set of their new video ‘Damaged’ – the first from their sophomore effort ‘Welcome To The Dollhouse’ (due March 18th):

Watching this back got me thinking; something about the ladies is quite magnetic, they have definitely come into their own. Would I be going too far by saying they may very well fill the void left by the Destiny’s Child’s and co before them? Whatever the case, the Syndrome directed video for ‘Damaged’ is set to premiere on March 11th on MTV’s TRL.
